There was a lot of scepticism when James Cameron announced his plan to helm a sequel (make that sequels) to his 2009 sci-fi blockbuster, but Avatar: The Way of Water has proven to be a major box office juggernaut in its own right as it climbs higher up the list of the most profitable films ever made.

The latest updates are in, and after crossing the $1.9B mark globally, 20th Century Studios has announced that The Way of Water has officially overtaken Spider-Man: No Way Home to become the sixth highest-grossing film of all time worldwide.

Overseas, the sequel picked up another $9.5M on Monday, bringing its offshore cume to $1,344.6M. It's now the fifth-biggest movie ever internationally.

Can The Way of Water possibly hope to continue this upward trajectory? We wouldn't bet against it!

With Avatar: The Way of Water, the cinematic experience reaches new heights as Cameron transports audiences back to the magnificent world of Pandora in a spectacular and stirring action-packed adventure. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water begins to tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri, and their kids), the trouble that follows them, the lengths they go to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

Directed by James Cameron and produced by Cameron and Jon Landau, the Lightstorm Entertainment Production stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet. Screenplay by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver. Story by James Cameron & Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver & Josh Friedman & Shane Salerno. David Valdes and Richard Baneham serve as the film’s executive producers.

i'll take the L here, totally thought it'd flop. Wasn't rooting for it to flop, but didn't see any hype. I'm usually the one who drags friends and family to theaters. But I watched this twice because both my brother and my work friends (who i never hung out with outside work before this wanted to see this) took me to theater twice. I thought it was pretty good, a little boring at parts but I'll definitely check out the 3rd one.

Man, I wish Black Adam had been this financially successful.
I really liked the movie and had wished it well. That’s just the way the cookie crumbles, I suppose.

@Taonrey - and that’s totally fair, I hope you had a better time at the movies with some other film. I’m just glad we can all finally go back into theatres after all the craziness.

@GetsugaTensho22 - yeah I had a pretty good time watching that, it is a shame. It may have been the last hope for Henry Cavill, superman, which I don’t care about others and it sucks for him and you guys.

Finally saw it yesterday and REALLY enjoyed it. It reminded me of times when blockbusters were something special. A rare spectacle and true escapism experience. Good job, grand master.

There's a whole...very big world out there.

Your particular circle not seeing a movie doesn't mean there aren't plenty around this giant globe that are
