In panel discussion that introduced the new trailer, BLADE RUNNER 2049 stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling, along with Director Dennis Villenuve, discussed the emotionl core of the story as well as big ideas carried forward from the 1982 original film and production aspects of the upcoming sequel.

Mr. Ford remarked upon the emtional power and depth of his first scene with Mr. Gosling.  Ford said, "It was a scene about history that transpired between the last time you saw the character and how you see him now, and they reference between the two characters, and it was unexpectedly deep, emotionally deep, and really rich."

Mr. Villenuve said that in his film, "We are still exploring the themes of memories and empathy."  These ideas featured prominently in Ridley Scott's 1982 cult classic 'Blade Runner.'  Many scenes in the original dealt with memories of humans and replicants as well as empathy and lack of it.  It's good to hear from BLADE RUNNER 2049's Director that his new film has more to say about the themes that so richly shaped the original.

Mr. Gosling commented on the immersive experience of filming on Mr. Villenuve's real sets, with practical effects and limited use of green screens.  "You were completely immersed in this universe you had grown up imagining and watching.  The trick for me was to not be impressed by it on camera, because it was supposed to be my everyday reality as though I'd known nothing else. But of course I'd never worked in this way or on that scale, so it was pretty overwhelming."

Many science fiction fans will recall how other sequels (and in particular a certain set of Prequels) over-used green screens and under-used emotional depth.  It appears that Director Villenuve and Producer Ridley Scott took to heart the lessons of the prequels of the 2000s and recent revival flims.  When actors respond to real props, real effects and real sets they give a much more vivid performance and that translates into a more enjoyable experience for the audience when they view the film.
