For anyone who might have somehow missed that giant all-caps headline, SPOILERS abound for both Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and potentially its sequel, from here on out.

Still with me? Recently, a Chinese website called "M Time" sat down with Apes director Matt Reeves and asked him the one question that curiously no one seems to have asked the filmmaker yet - Did Koba (portrayed brilliantly through motion-capture by Toby Kebbell - who is also our new Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four reboot) actually die from his fall after the climactic fight with Caesar? We've been provided with the English translation for this interview, courtesy of Badass Digest:

"You're one of the few people to ever mention that. That's pretty funny. Because I struggled with...I thought that Toby Kebbell gave such an incredible performance. And I thought he was so powerful and I thought: 'God, you don't find a villain who has got that great a story.'

Because as you said, he was not really formed as a villain; he's really a tragic figure. And I thought: 'God, he's amazing; let's leave open the possibility. Let's create the door of a possibility if we find a story that becomes worth telling, that we can go down that path again because I thought the vein was so rich.'

Reeves goes on to reveal that at one point, heavy consideration was given to the possibility of making Koba's survival MUCH clearer for audiences:

"And so I actually had been working on a version where you could actually see him survive and I realized that it wasn't...it was Caesar's movie, and it was undercutting the whole idea. It sort of felt cheap. And so as we were mixing, I was like: 'I want to just leave one tiny Easter Egg right at the end. I want to leave open the door just the tiniest crack.' "

Of course, the Easter Egg he's referring to is that "scene" at the very end of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, after the credits roll. The screen remains blank for a few extra seconds until something can be heard moving around amidst rubble and debris. A few faint ape-like sounds can be discerned...and that's it. Combined with Matt Reeves' not-so-subtle comments, this teaser further reinforces the tantalizing possibility that the villainous Koba may be alive and could return in the sequel to cause some more trouble for Caesar, his apes, and possibly the rapidly-advancing human military presence that was teased in the last scene of the film.

So what do you think? Do you want to see Koba defy death and return for the sequel? Sound off in the comments below!

A growing nation of genetically evolved apes led by Caesar is threatened by a band of human survivors of the devastating virus unleashed a decade earlier. They reach a fragile peace, but it proves short-lived, as both sides are brought to the brink of a war that will determine who will emerge as Earth’s dominant species.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is directed by Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Let Me In), from a screenplay written by Mark Bomback, Scott Z. Burns, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The cast includes: Andy Serkis (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey), Jason Clarke (Zero Dark Thirty, Public Enemies, The Great Gatsby), Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight Rises, The Harry Potter film series), Keri Russell (The Americans, Mission Impossible III), Toby Kebbell (The Prince of Persia, Wrath of the Titans, Rock N Rolla), Kodi Smit-McPhee (Let Me In, ParaNorman), Enrique Murciano (Traffic, Black Hawk Down), Kirk Acevedo (The Thin Red Line) and Judy Greer (The Descendants, Three Kings, 13 Going on 30). The film hit theaters July 11, 2014.

That would be cool. It would also be awesome if Franco survived the virus and returns.

Good job.

Want to see POTA go more global in the next film though, not really focus on another ape power struggle.

"Want to see POTA go more global in the next film though..."

@Zeek Completely agree! So far, we've been stuck in San Francisco watching the very same, secluded ape colony for two movies now...it's time they branch out a bit more. There was a lot of talk about the military getting involved, but then the movie ended. Hopefully they play a large part in making it more of a global focus and a true, all-encompassing Human-Ape war that leads to the apes taking over completely.

Article looks fine to me, Sauron.

Maybe I'm not the best person to judge, though. I don't think I'd be able to hammer out three sentences before calling it quits 'cause I'm too drunk. Or maybe I'd go all the way just to see how long it stays up.

Not sure if I can suspend my belief on Koba surviving that crazy fall, but I love this franchise so much, I'll go with it.

I can go for two more movies that flesh out a war and the possibilities of Ceaser getting killed off...then give me PLANET OF THE APES.

@Minty, Aw shucks now you got me blushing. I agree though, Koba is easily in the top 3 best villains of the year.

I would love to see Koba again in another movie, he was such a great character!

But... I want the next one to focus primarily on the human-ape war, because I've been dying to finally see that on the big screen.

@Minty LOL. The marketing folks probably dropped the ball a bit with the titles for these movies, didn't they?

I wish it would've been Franco, though. Rise was one of his best performances.

SauronsBANE - 9/4/2014, 10:06 AM
@MercwithMouth, Thanks! I kind of wish Franco's character would come back too, but the scene with Caesar finding the video of them in his old room in the attic was enough closure for me. It'd be funny if he did come back though...since literally EVERYTHING that happened to the world is basically his own fault haha.

@Minty, Oh man, I can't wait to see how they end up dancing around a title like that!

Minty, Alexander Pierce is no where near as amazing a villain as Koba was. His cause has no sympathy, it's cliche evil. I thought he was just as boring and bland as almost every other Marvel film villain. And worst of all, he didn't even have a costume or an interesting look. Just Robert Redford in a suit.

Koba and Magneto/Sentinels win the villains of the year award imo.
BlackIceJoe
BlackIceJoe - 9/4/2014, 10:12 AM
I personally would prefer him not to come back. This way there can be a new villain. I would like to see James Franco return though. He could have easily been immune to the virus.
Minty
Minty - 9/4/2014, 10:20 AM
@SauronsBANE - Lol me neither!

@thewonderer - Never said he was as good as Koba - there's no contest there. But Pierce was decent in his own way - perhaps thanks to the other villains this year being. I agree Fassbender is great as Magneto (though preferred him in First Class), but saw him more as an anti-hero. The (future) Sentinels were outstanding (sorry forgot to count them). My problem was Trask was massively underused despite being set-up as the main villain.

Ronan got the short end of the stick in Guardians, Harry Osborn was average in a pretty poor film. The Winter Soldier himself looked cool at times but was pretty bland. Electro and Rhino can just leave.

1) Koba
2) Future Sentinels
3) Alexander Pierce

If you notice in the movie, even without hearing the after credit thing, they don't portray him as dying from that scene. That crane/bridge bends up and over him as it was going down, protecting him from anymore major damage. They totally made the scene to make you think he survived, not died.
MightyZeus
MightyZeus - 9/5/2014, 4:57 AM
I would like to see Koba return in the next sequel and i think it's very clever to leave that doorway open if he does or does not return. Koba is easily one of my favorite villains of the year along with a few other's but Koba's right at the top.
