Guardians of the Galaxy. Excited much?

Cosmic Avengers.

The potential announcement this month of a Guardians of the Galaxy movie blew my mind.

However, there are others out there who responded with a "Guardians of the What movie? who are they?".

The Guardians are, in essence, Avengers in space. A bunch of ragtag cosmic heroes, thrown together to protect the universe from this and that.

With the Thanos teaser in Avengers, I immediately suspected Guardians was next on the Marvel Studios radar. And it seems I possibly was right. Thanos played a big part in recent Guardians stories, and would be a great introduction to a future Avengers baddie, the way Thor was for Loki.

THE TEAM
Peter Quill/Star Lord: The leader. He's in charge, but for the life of him doesn't know why. He acts confident, but really is in way over his head most of the time, charging in guns blazing. Essentially, Han Solo. Despite his sometimes shady past, he does have a moral compass, and does his best to make a bad situation good, for the sake of his team and for the universe.

Groot: A great big walking tree. Capable of only speaking the words "I Am Groot". Actually a monarch of his species, Groot's delivery of that line is actually his own language that only his best friend Rocky can understand. Essentially, Chewbacca.

Rocket Raccoon: A walking, talking raccoon, skilled in heavy weapons. Sarcastic, cynical, and mighty heroic. Best friends with a tree, who he would fight heaven and hell to protect. Even thought he talks tough, the Guardians are more of an ideal to him than his friends would realise.
(Side note: Ray Winstone as the voice of Raccoon? If only he hadn't been a squirrel in a Narnia film!!)

Gamora: Green skinned warrior chick, adopted daughter of Thanos. A sexy, violent, cosmic Red Sonja.

Drax: Born and bred to be the weapon of Thano's destruction. A man of few words. He's got 2 mean knifes, and means to use them. Conan in space.

Adam Warlock: Team's telepath, has a soul gem on his forehead that gives him uber-power. Always reverent, with little sense of humour. Has another personality called Magus, who is one vicious dude.

VILLAIN (main or teased)
Thanos: the mad Titan. Obsessed with death, his only aim is meeting her, even if he has to take the universe with him. Super smart, super strong, and cold as ice.

The Guardians can bring us something that we've never seen in a long time, an action adventure set in space, with an oddball crew and plenty of comedic potential. Alien races, seedy galactic underworld elements, and an opportunity for sweet new sci-fi ideas.

It will expand on the Marvel Universe, showing us what's beyond Earth, though no doubt it has an effect on Earth after all is said and done. (namely Thanos, and his prime motivation for taking on Avengers).

Kinda makes me wonder if one of the team, or somebody from that movie, will stay behind on Earth to help out any potential threat from Thanos. It'd be nice if they throw Nova on this team at some point, though he was never an official member in the books, he's had multiple run-ins with them and would be an organic connection.

The Guardians lacks big name value ala Iron Man or Thor. But with the huge marketing push this film will surely receive (Expect a lot of "From the studio that brought you Avengers"), I'm sure it'll be an incredible spectacle to behold, a fun romp through cosmic Marvel that a lot of us have always wanted.

**this is my first article, I apologise for any lack of cohesion. I'm just excited. And i want you all excited with me. Is that weird?

i'm very excited in seeing this movie, not sure if all the characters will make it,i hope so.if they drop anyone it'll be rocket racoon & groot.

i think they'll have nova prime in it as well.

it'll probably give us our proper first look at thanos,if thanos just turns out being just another cameo, maybe have magnus as the movies main villain.

You really think Disney will drop Rocket Raccoon and Groot!! haha! Think kids. Kids means big money, man. And honestly, most people who read Guardians wouldn't accept a team without them. Rocket = synonymous with the Guardians.

Marvel's NOW relaunch seems to suggest they feel the same way, with Rocket front and center on their promos.

@ xcrementus

For sure, Rocket Raccoon will be the LAST character they leave out. Groot, I'm not so sure. Like you said, Marvel NOW is prepping everyone for the Guardians, but you know who hasn't been shown? "I AM GROOT!"

I do hope he's in it though, I love the dynamic between him and Rocket Raccoon.

Also, the people saying this looks dumb are people who have never read a comic with the Guardians, much less Annihilation Conquest.

I can guarantee that they would change their mind if they read Conquest.

Groot's exclusion would surprise me a lot. I see Rocket and Groot as a duo, they make each other a lot more awesome.
Shared screen time shouldn't be a problem, since they're always together.

I think if anybody's getting cut, its out of Drax or Warlock. You need Gamora for female quota, Rocky + Groot for comedy, Star Lord's the leader. The precious 5th spot is up for grabs.

Why haven't I heard of Guardians of the Galaxy? Are they semi-new?

Comics are excellent, hell I'd love a little Jack Flag or Vance Astro in the mix too. My only fear is that they're gonna use Star-Lords look from the new Avengers Assemble comic where he's not wearing the helmet.

Star-Lords Helmet = Ultimate Cosmic Badassery

In the series there ended up being a total of 13 team members by the end of it, and it definitely had an original Star Wars kinda flow. If they decide to go all trilogy on it they could introduce a good number of those and end the second one with a Warlock becoming Magus cliffhanger set up for the third.

This and Edgar Wrights Ant-Man have me super psyched for Phase 2 MCU

@Tainted87, the original incarnation are old school. But the revamped team, the one which the upcoming film is based on, have been around since 2008.

The team was spun out of events of the Annihilation:Conquest storyline from that year, where the team was assembled to fight against Ultron.

After that event, the team stuck together in an ongoing Guardians of the Galaxy series.

They were involved in the War Of Kings cosmic storyline, but the book was later cancelled.

All plot threads were later wrapped up in the Thanos Imperative story, where Star Lord is killed with Nova, in order to keep Thanos from destroying the universe.

Recently they've popped up again, with Star Lord alive, in the Avengers Assemble series.

Marvel's NOW relaunch promises the Guardians and Nova to be heavily involved, perhaps launching a new series for both, in the leadup to the (99% announced) film.

This movie has the potential to to be awesome! I loved Annihilation, I have the hardcover of the entire series. I seriously think a GotG movie could easily be as good as the Avengers but only under 2 conditions...

1) No contact with the Avengers. Not only is Rocket Raccoon a must for for the movie, but I think he will make the movie. At the same time, I don't want to see him interacting with Iron Man or Cap, etc... That might stretch the MCU a little far...

2) No Direct contact with Thanos. Keep him for the Avengers. If course he has to be mentioned. Not only for Drax and Gamora's origins, but to show that they are in the MCU, but thats it. Just keep him as reference, maybe a few lackies to show his presence out in the galaxy

Someone said earlier that the only characters that could be dropped is Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Oh, that is so wrong indeed. Rocket Raccoon is gonna be in the movie no doubt in my mid. Groot can maybe not be in it, but I doubt it. Andy Serkis for Rocket Raccoon please?

@MoonDoggy: What do you mean no interaction with the Avengers? This is no doubt gonna happen, most likely in Avengers 2. And I disagree about Thanos, he should be the main villain in Guardians. In the end lets say he, gets past the Guardians when he's about to loose to them and gets some of the gems(which he uses with the gauntlet that he will steal in the credits or something in Thor 2, or just by themselves) blows past the guardians thinking he beat them and heads to earth, which is where the Guardians go to warn earth/stop Thanos, and this is where they team up with avengers and take down Thanos(This will of course be in Avengers 2

Sounds Epic to me.

Avengers2012 - 7/9/2012, 12:51 PM
This what I think the team for the movie will be.

Star-Lord(the leader), Gamora(need a girl, and she has a relation to Thanos), Drax(heavy hitter for the team and relation to Thanos), Rocket Raccoon(comic relief, awesome, badass, and then just one more. I think five will be the limit. And it will probably be Adam Warlock. I think it will be him because he has a huge relation to Thanos, with the gem and all and being one of his greatest enemies in the comics.

So yea, Star Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Drax, Gamora, and Adam Warlock.

And maybe Nova will be in it, but this might just be to much, at least in my opinion so I hope not.

@Avengers2012 - What I mean is, as soon as you have RDJ on screen talking to a walking talking racoon, any shred of realism that the MCU has goes right out the window. In the context of a GotG Movie, RR would work just fine, even with references to other MCU projects. But, Rocket Raccoon just doesn't fit in the world created by the first 6 films. Pick any movie from "Phase 1" and tell me which one Rocket Raccoon would "fit" in...
Avengers2012
Avengers2012 - 7/9/2012, 5:19 PM
He'll fit with all of them if he's done good/right. And I truly believe that. If there making a GOTG, with Thanos, you can bet there gonna interact with the Avengers since Thanos was first seen in The Avengers credits..... Like I said in my other post, I'm almost positive that at some point, most likely Avengers 2, The Avengers and Guardians are gonna team up. The GOTG movie is in the same MCU as The Avengers so there gonna have to fit in or it just won't work all and they won't make another movie of them.
Avengers2012
Avengers2012 - 7/9/2012, 5:27 PM
Now, I'm not saying there gonna interact with The Avengers in the GOTG movie, but they definitely will in a future movie, which I think will be Avengers 2(when it gets closer they'll prob rename it to like "Marvel's The Avengers 2: Guardians Unite" or something like that). In fact its a possibility they interact with maybe one of The Avengers, or SHIELD, in the after credits of the GOTG movie. With Thanos involved with the Guardians, and Thanos being shown in The Avengers after credits scene there gonna have to meet up eventually.
OriginalGuardiansPlease
OriginalGuardiansPlease - 7/9/2012, 5:27 PM
the movie is supposed to include some of the original members along with members from the new team. My guess is Starhawk, Vance, and maybe Nikki although Yondu would look awesome.

Rocket Racoon, Groot, and Star-Lord are probably a given although you can't bet against either Drax or Moondragon if Thanos is in it.

Where did you see anyone say that it will include original members too? I've seen fans say they want it to, but I dont think anyone working on the actual movie has said that.

nice write up. Now can you explain what happened to the other GUardians team from the 90s?
xcrementus
xcrementus - 7/10/2012, 5:55 AM
@Ghost: Because of some sort of cosmic error, the old Guardians' timeline is in flux, constantly reshaping again and again.

Vance Astro from the original team is found by the modern Guardians, displaced in time. He's not the exact same one from the older team, because of the altered timeline.

Eventually, the modern Guardians head into the future to help the old-school Guardians against the Badoon. The battle ends with their universe being destroyed, along with the old-school Guardians.

The modern Guardians are warned that if things aren't saved right now, the universe will meet the same end.

ya know, I initially rolled my eyes when Feige hinted at going cosmic....

but now I am freakishly excited for this cosmic universe. CBMs nowadays are burdened by explaining 'why they wear their costumes', 'how they got their powers', and other burdens of realism, but in space it doesn't matter--they're aliens, dude, a friggin raccoon alien and a tree, deal with it!
