The latest film in the Jurassic Park franchise is Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and according to critics and viewers alike, it’s not as good when compared to the previous movie. One of the reasons why fans supported this new movie has much to do with the return of Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm.
For those who are unaware, the character Ian Malcolm last appeared in Jurassic Park: The Lost World, and that’s around 20-years ago. When fans found out he was returning, most expected him to have a huge role, but such was not the case.
The question is, then, why was Jeff Goldblum never given a more substantial role in the film? Well, this can be answered by co-writer of the movie, Colin Trevorrow.
"We never did. It always felt really cheap to me. It always felt fake," according to Trevorrow in a statement to Empire after being asked whether or not Malcolm had the ability to play a larger role in earlier scripts. "It felt like a construct of screenwriters trying to figure out how to fit in a character they love. I have so much respect for those characters I just wouldn’t want them doing anything I don’t think they’d naturally do."
It’s quite sad because Malcolm only had very short moments, and they were shown at the beginning and at the end of the movie. The scenes consist of Malcolm sitting before Congress where he answered questions regarding the saving of the dinosaurs.
Instead of agreeing to save the magnificent creatures, Malcolm says nature didn’t intend for them to survive, therefore, saving them would go against what nature wanted.
Should there be a next movie in the near future, we can only hope Malcolm makes several appearances because he was one of the best aspects of the older movies.
