Plans seem to be in place for Pacific Rim to be the next cinematic universe to grace our screens, following in the footsteps of Universal’s Dark Universe, the DCEU and of course, the MCU.

Director of Pacific Rim: Uprisin,: Steven S DeKnight, broke the news, announcing potential plans for a cinematic universe while speaking with Nerdist. He said:

“I’m certainly hoping so. I think you’ll definitely probably get more comics. The plan was always to use this movie as a launching pad.”

However, as is often the case, plans for a universe of films seem to be dependand on the second movie in the franchise being a success.

DeKnight Explains: “If enough people show up to this, we’ve already talked about the plot of the third movie, and how the end of the third movie would expand the universe to a Star Wars/Star Trek-style [franchise or series] where you can go in many, many different directions.”

DeKnight went on to suggest that he would also love to see an animated TV series emerge, and mentioned that “you can go spinoffs and you can go one offs” when speaking further about the franchise.

While there has been talk of an animated version of Pacific Rim for some time, nothing has been confirmed yet. It will be interesting to see how Pacific Rim: Uprising performs at the box office next year and whether the plans for a Star Wars style universe do indeed come to fruition.
