New Research Has Shown That The Most Popular Netflix Programming Is Science Fiction
Netflix is playing a major role in the recent sci-fi renaissance, as the company is preparing to unveil even more sci-fi programming in the coming years in response to the success of their current content.
Netflix subscribers are loving the streaming service's science fiction content, according to a report from TV research firm Ampere Analysis. Ampere reports that the "sci-fi and fantasy" genre was the most popular category in the first quarter of 2018, surpassing the previous genre champion, comedy.
This news makes sense considering the large number of big-budget sci-fi series Netflix has launched over the past year, with Stranger Things becoming the streaming service's flagship program. Altered Carbon, Mute, The Cloverfield Paradox and Annihilation were all also released on Netflix in the past few months. While Annihilation got a theatrical release in North America, it went straight to Netflix internationally.
Netflix is going big on new science fiction content in the coming years, as the streaming giant is changing their content strategy with the popularity of science fiction in mind. Ampere is reporting that 29% of all upcoming Netflix originals will fall in the sci-fi and fantasy genre, a higher number than any other genre.
Stranger Things is set to run for at least two or three more seasons, and the creators of the new Lost In Space reboot are already working on a second season.
The trend of viewers favoring science fiction is not just restricted to Netflix, as HBO's Westworld has become a huge hit as well. CBS's Star Trek: Discovery, available exclusively on a new streaming service in the United States, was not quite as popular despite mostly positive reviews.
