BOX OFFICE: POWER RANGERS Kicks Off North American Box Office Run With $3.6 Million

The Power Rangers reboot finally opened in North American theaters last night, and while it won't have a terrible weekend, it doesn't look set to get anywhere near that all-important #1 spot...

Power Rangers got off to a stronger start than expected during Thursday evening showings with an impressive haul of $3.6 million. That's now put the reboot on track to earn $30 million to $40 million during its domestic debut, an amount which looks set to help it hold off competition from the likes of the Ryan Reynolds-led Life ($15 million - $20 million) and cop comedy CHIPs ($10 million - $12 million).

Power Rangers has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 44%, a figure it's fair to say is better than pretty much anyone ever expected. Whether or not
bad word of mouth will hurt it obviously remains to be seen.

However, expected Power Rangers and all of these releases to be completely destroyed by Beauty and the Beast; after a massive $174.8 million debut last week, it's widely believed that it will earn upwards of $80 million this weekend, a figure which eclipses all of these newcomers. @ODanil - its a great opening, for a film that cost only 105 mil to make. but with marketing and ads it was estimated to cost a total of 250 mil, so china/overseas def has to compensate for the rest.

@ODanil - its expected to make about 35 - 40 mil (and 60 mil max only if it does really well like kong skull island did). But BATB is winning again by huge margins. it's guaranteed a sequel now but based on reviews and these numbers no one is probably gonna show up for the sequel like TMNT 2, unless they cast a huge actor or introduce another set of rangers

Fcking Beauty and the Beast has to throw shade on top of the Rangers shine. Well part 2 should have a better scheduled date if they fail this weekend.

Go Go Power Rangers! It was a huge fan service film. I couldn't take my smile off through out the whole movie.

@gmoney0505 - I heard about the 44 percent. And ya damn it was good. I don't even wanna go over to RT.

@gmoney0505 - I kind of hate RT for this specific reason. 44% sounds bad, but it actually means about half the reviewers liked the movie. Not that most reviewers thought it was bad.

@VenomGT - I really really enjoyed it. I'd give it a very positive 8 out of 10 and am looking forward to a sequel. I'll be seeing it again later today.

After this weekend, it's all up to word-of-mouth and overseas markets in order for this turn a profit. Honestly, the studio could have timed the release better. Seeing this later today and I'm very much looking forward to it.
