POWER RANGERS: Netflix's Film And TV Series Reboot Reportedly Remains In Active Development

It's been far too long since we've heard anything definitive about Netflix's Power Rangers movie and TV show, but the latest update suggests both projects remain in active development at the streamer.

After learning Netflix was working on a Power Rangers reboot, excitement among fans of the long-running franchise quickly went through the roof.

It's previously been reported that a movie and TV series are in the works, with End of the F***ing World creator and director Jonathan Entwistle spearheading a new Power Rangers Cinematic Universe alongside Jenny Klein (Jessica Jones). With any luck, that solid creative team means we're not getting a repeat of 2017's disappointing effort.

Regardless, it's been a while since we've had any sort of solid update on these projects, and any work that was taking place will have now come to a halt as a result of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

TV Line (via SFFGazette.com) recently shared word on where things stand with Netflix's plans to reboot the Power Rangers franchise, stating: "All a Hasbro rep was able to tell Inside Line is that 'development is ongoing.'"

It's a promising, albeit somewhat disappointing update, but at least the movie and TV show haven't been scrapped. That's always a risk, especially in the streaming realm, but Hollywood shutting down means both are a still long way from reaching our screens.

We've previously heard these Rangers will be new characters and not the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team. Tonally, it sounds like Netflix will put the cheese to one side in an effort to find a more serious approach to this property, with a serialised form of storytelling similar to the majority of streaming shows.

The Zords look set to be used sparingly, while Japan is likely to heavily feature as well. It also sounds like we're getting new takes on Zordon and Alpha again, so fingers crossed fans embrace this take more than what we saw in theaters six years ago.

@bobevanz - skip the first one, marketing has Mark Hamill on the cover, he's barely in it and not even the main character lol

@WruceBayne - And what about a McGuyver show. A dude that has an alien armor and can make a bomb with gum.

So what is to stop these studios from going overseas and use non-SAG actors to make these films to avoid striking actors...not that I want to give them any ideas.

@Forthas - to be honest with you… nothing. They would have to use “non union” everything, from Craft services to stuntmen and everything in between. The standard would be dramatically lowered though.

@WruceBayne - Well that is depressing to learn. Thanks for the info!

Anyone ever see the fan made power rangers? It seems like something kids and adults could enjoy if they went the same route to make a movie. It’s like Halo, pacific rim and power rangers mixed together.

That's great to hear. A more adultish oriented Power Rangers would be so cool. My wife and I actually really enjoyed the 2017 movie. Going into it we thought it'd be shit, but were pleasantly surprised. The MEGAZORD was a real downer though. Here's hoping we get something good!

They tried to do adult in the reboot and it didn’t really work. Happy medium between campy and adult.

"2017's disappointing effort"

Speak for yourself, I loved it. But excited to see what they come up with for this.

Just do Shattered Grid.

Everyone knows who the Power Rangers are. We dont need an origin story. We get one every season of the show.

Recast the original MMPR. And just start at Shattered Grid and go from there. Do flashbacks if you need to like the comics. Power Rangers can be serious if done right. They need to tone down the campiness and low budget feel of the show and acting.
