After a strong start and a solid reception from fans, things were looking up for the Power Rangers, but alas, the good times more or less ended after its opening weekend as the immense competition from heavyweights, Beauty and the Beast, Kong: Skull Island, and Logan, proved to be just a little too much to handle. Ultimately, the Lionsgate production grossed $140.2 million on a $100 million budget, which while not exactly a box office bomb, is far from the numbers it needed to warrant a sequel.

While it's mostly looked bleak on the sequel front for the past few weeks, there have been recent rumblings that the movie's insane merchandise sales and Lionsgate's reported 25% stake in the production budget could result in a second installment being greenlit. Neither update has provided us with anything directly from the studio, but with the Blu-ray set to release today, the director has weighed in.

In a recent interview with ScreenRant, director Dean Israelite shared his honest thoughts on whether a sequel could actually still happen. “I hope so. It’s obviously not up to me, but I know the studio (Lionsgate) and Saban are talking in earnest about it, and are trying to push forward. They’re having a discussion.” While these comments might not mean much to most, it does at least reveal that the sequel is not out of consideration with the studios just yet.

As for the potential villain, outside of the long-confirmed Green Ranger Tommy Oliver, Israelite revealed to ComicBook, that he would like to introduce the one-and-only Lord Zedd.

Call me crazy but this movie wasn't that bad! It was actually more on the good side. The rangers are very fleshed out and they really focus on making them a team. Was surprised af when watching and realized that I actually care about these teens with attitude lol

@Kevwebsz - Would've been better if they were simply new teens with new names since this was a reboot.

@TheLight - So true, I know I said this before, but I believe us old school Power Ranger fans would have been a lot more forgiving if they went with a new team with new names, and new powers (and ranger motif), instead of doing what they did here.

Although the weird tonality, and fear of embracing the oddities of superheroism might have still hindered that film like it hurt this one.

just watched this , this past weekend it's not completely terrible but a lot more practical efforts could've been done IMO

I actually enjoyed this movie, it was more of an origin story. If they made a sequel they would probably focus more on the actual Power Rangers and fighting instead of trying to morph for the 2/3 of the movie.

I actually loved this movie. I don't get the low critical scores the film has gotten. It embraced enough of the cheesiness of the tv shows, but not so much to be jarring. It went deeper into the personal lives of the rangers than any of the series before, making them far more relatable(especially to kids of this generation). The acting was surprisingly great, even from the more inexperienced actors.

The only bad thing about the film for me was that a handful of the heavy c.g. scenes were very noticeably c.g.

I saw this with my son thought it was going to be cheesy goofy but came out surprised with how they showed the lives of the Rangers and made them more relatable to how peoples live or the issue people deal with.
I did enjoy it just wish the Megazord wasn't all knightly looking.

I liked the movie, but they need to tone up the kung fu.

I hope it doesn't get a sequel.

@TexasAvenger - It's real simple, you don't have to watch something. Don't decide for others what they should or shouldn't get. Never understood this mentality.
TexasAvenger
TexasAvenger - 6/27/2017, 8:52 AM
@BobbyW - I'm not deciding for anyone. Where did I say "People, don't go watch this"? Nice reach there.
BoW
BoW - 6/27/2017, 10:21 AM
@TexasAvenger - True but why would you say you hope it doesn't get a sequel? What difference would it make if you didn't enjoy it? I'm genuinely asking, not taking a dig at you like is customary when people have differing opinions. Thanks for the clarification.
TexasAvenger
TexasAvenger - 6/27/2017, 10:51 AM
@BobbyW - Cuz I don't like Dean Israelite's direction and styles, and Haim Saban is notoriously cheap so I think it'd be more of the same. No action for an hour and a half and then like 20 minutes of lackluster fighting.

@TexasAvenger - Fair points, appreciate the reply, thanks.

I would love a Power Rangers movie, but it has to be properly done.

I'm not surprised considering how well those toys sold. There has to be money to be made. Which is great because I really enjoyed the movie. With a few little changes I bet the next one could find a larger audience.

God almighty....the movie was awful! It just got worse and worse as it went on, it reminded me of Green Lantern . Cannot believe there gonna go ahead with a sequel. It scored higher on Rotten Tomatos then BVS:Doj...the critics on that site would wanna lay off "the pipe" . BVS:Doj wasn't great but it was a frickin Master Piece compared with PR17, PR95 was better than PR17!!!!!!!
PrimitiveMan
PrimitiveMan - 6/27/2017, 11:59 PM
@emeraldtaurus - True, as much shit has I give BvS (and rightfully so). At least BvS was more faithful to the source material than this terrible 'Power Rangers' movie... Which was basically a generic teen angst movie with little of the super heroism sprinkled in. Plus BvS was at least a superhero movie through and through, despite the flaws it has.

So yeah, I agree with you.

hope we get a sequel. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie as a modern reboot, with a lot of homages! Bring on Female Tommy and a bad ass Lord Zedd!
DENNISsystem
DENNISsystem - 6/27/2017, 10:22 AM
@Dedpool - Rita WAS the female tommy. We need actual Tommy now.
TheLight
TheLight - 6/27/2017, 7:29 PM
@DENNISsystem - If they changed the original 5, what makes you think we won't get a Tomi Oliver?
DENNISsystem
DENNISsystem - 6/27/2017, 8:27 PM
@TheLight - because with numbers this low, IF a sequel is green lit, they're going to try to get as close to the series most popular character as they can so they can actually MAKE money.

I enjoyed the Movie , but it was a better Teenage Movie than à Power Ranger Movie . They are room for improvement but I will be very happy if they announce à Sequel
