POWER RANGERS Reboot Secures A Prime Summer Release Date In China

While it was never guaranteed it would happen, Lionsgate has managed to secure a China release date for their Power Rangers reboot, which could pay off in a huge way at the worldwide box office.

Against all odds, Lionsgate's Power Rangers has landed a release date in China!

The Dean Israelite-directed feature will bow on May 12 in the Middle Kingdom, where it will face stiff, but manageable, competition from both Warner Bros.' King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which opens the same day, and Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which opens the week prior.

There had been much speculation over the past few weeks on whether or not China would grant the superhero film a release date, mostly due to the inclusion of a gay character, which in the past has been a controversial subject matter for the country, as well as the franchise's ties to Japan, but despite its history, China's media regulators have decided to give the Rangers reboot a green light to run without cuts.

At the moment, Power Rangers is boasting an impressive "A" CinemaScore and has received a warm reception from long-time fans of the franchise. Its box office total currently stands at $65.7 million domestic, $98.7 million worldwide (as of 03/26) and it should be crossing the $100 million mark by the end of the week, if not sooner. Now, while, those aren't exactly sequel numbers, there's plenty to suggest that the film's box office run is far from over, especially now with releases set for South Korea on April 20, China on May 12, and of course, Japan -
the country from where the franchise originates - on July 15.

So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

"Inclusion of a gay character"

Between this film and Beauty and the Beast, you could hardly even say that. Both films hyped up their "LGBT representation" in the press for literally almost nothing.

@MattBellissimo - Maybe those idiots thought they would get more money from LGBT community that way? You know suits how they think.

@Matador - or maybe they just wanted to include characters that represent a more broad range of people. Being gay is still pretty taboo so they are standing up against bigots by including LGBT characters.

@MattBellissimo - I disagree. I think they made a comment about having a LGBTQ character, and the media ran with the story. I read several articles about it, and they all literally quoted the same thing.

@MattBellissimo - Yeah I haven't seen many articles for Power Rangers about the LGBT representation, never hyped it up though.

Is this film enjoyable for those who watched mighty morphin a while back? Plan to see it when its on digital since there are no theatres in my country.

@AbidNaga - I have not seen it yet, but from what I've read and heard, the film is enjoyable as an action flick, though it takes a while to get to what people ACTUALLY want to see. Pays enough tribute to the old series while forging a new path.

I know a lot of people thought it would be Fant4stic level terrible, but it seems it turned out better than expected. One of my bandmates is a HUGE MMPR fan and he loved it.
