REBEL MOON: Netflix Releases First Official Poster For Zack Snyder's Sci-Fi Epic

"War Comes to Every World."

Netflix debuted a behind-the-scenes featurette for Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon during its TUDUM event over the weekend, and the streamer has followed-up the footage with the first official poster for the Justice League director's sci-fi adventure.

The banner spotlights Sofia Boutella's main protagonist, Kora, as she stands weapon-in-hand on a lonely-looking planet, while a ship can be seen in the sky above her.

Her character is described as "a young woman with a mysterious past who seeks out warriors from neighbouring planets to help a peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy take a stand against the tyrannical Regent Balisarius."

Snyder explained the plot of his Akira Kurosawa-inspired tale during a recent interview.

"The movie’s about a planet not in our... it’s a space fantasy so there’s no Earth, necessarily. But there’s a community on a planet, a farming planet, and there’s a bunch of bad guys from other worlds [who] are in the area and they need to be fed, so they come to the village and ask for the village to feed them while they’re doing their war in that area of the galaxy. And, of course, they are not kind about asking and the result will probably be the obliteration of the village itself. The villagers decide to fight, and so they have to go out into the galaxy and collect warriors to help them."

The basic premise of Seven Samurai has been replicated countless times (we even had a sci-fi take on the story in the little-seen Roger Corman movie Battle Beyond the Stars), so let's hope Snyder is planning to inject a few new ideas here.

Rebel Moon also stars Djimon Hounsou, Cary Elwes, Corey Stoll, Michiel Huisman, Alfonso Herrera, Charlie Hunnam, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Stuart Martin, Jena Malone, Staz Nair, E. Duffy, Charlotte Maggi, Sky Yang Sofia, and Anthony Hopkins.

The movie is set to premiere on December 22.

Man I hope it's not anything like Suckerpunch.

That was his last original I think and that story was dull. Action was dope though.

The scope seems epic...so let's see.

@UniqNo - Then you will probably be glad to know (and it's in the article itself) this is not his "original" idea anyway.

Waiting for the trailer to see what's in the box! The plot has been done to death countless times in the past, it will be all about the presentation, characters and story telling.

@TheOtherOn - i see your point but...."based on", but story is his, unlike all the other adaptions he's done. I also beleive this is him directing his own screenplay.... las time he did that was Suckerpunch and then before that i think was 300, and that was quite literally ripped straight from the Frank Millar book...even the dialogue so I think it's probably the most original work he's done since Suckerpunch.

I'm curious to see how FUN this movie ends up being, because all the images make it look so serious and bleak.

Hoping we can get a bunch of likeable characters and not just slow motion action for 10 hours.

I will watch this.

Snyder is capable of making good content.(His horrible DCFU work not withstanding) I thought his Watchmen movie was fantastic.

I look forward to seeing what he comes up with post DC.

@DocSpock - yeah there’s clearly a bad taste in everyone’s mouth with some of Snyder’s work - but I welcome any new Sci-Fi movie with an already tried and worked well plot any day.

@DocSpock - I think his Watchmen still holds up well (apart from some of the horrible work in the make up dept to age up some of the actors), and to a certain point works well thematically, visually and maturity to Lindelof's Watchmen (Squid aside), as we know it's a sequel to the book anyway.

@UniqNo -

The Watchmen series may be my alltime favorite comic/graphic novel series.

Watchmen and 300 were great. It was other people's creative though. Both of them kind of in the same cynical ballpark too. Give him free reign and it's a shitshow.

@DocSpock - You mean the TV series? yeah, it was so well done and ended it on the right note... Leaving them guessing, but nowhere really for it to go.

Jeremy Irons best work in years!

As a piece of work though i admire Lindelof and his team for creating something very original in that already established lore. Loved where they went with Hooded Justice.

I loved the graphic novels. I loved the Watchmen movie. I thought the TV show was good though it was too message heavy.

4 out of 6 names on the poster are his.

Oh, and it's Netflix, so, yea, there's that.

@UniqNo - It's Union rules. Since he wrote the story he belongs to the Screenwriters Guild. There is also a director's guild and producer's guild. So since he serves in these roles for this film, his name has to appear on the poster. If it doesn't, both him and Netflix would be served a hefty fine.

@GarthRanzz - I see you point, but I'm also sure there have been cases for big studio movies that don't show any of the credits on their one sheets or posters.

The cast for this is crazy.

I wish this movie turns out to be awesome, so Zack Snyder can move on from the DC thing and focus on hos own stuff.

Also, we need more good sci fi.

So it's an unacknowledged remake of a 2004 popular anime, SAMURAI 7, which was already based on the 1954 Akira Kurosawa film. A futuristic world where alien warriors - guess what - are gathered for an epic battle to help poor villagers. One of the female character in the anime is named 'Kirara'. In the film, Sofia Boutella is 'Kora'. Jeez.
