Robert Rodriguez on a Predators Sequel, Sin City 2 and a Mad Man Adaptation

The prolific filmmaker said that there he has "several" ideas for a sequel or prequel to Predators and updates some of his other comic book movie projects in development!

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has been associated with the Predator franchise since Fox first hired him to write a sequel to the original movie (ignoring Predator 2) way back in 1994. He scrapped his script when he came back to the franchise as the producer of Predators, with Nimrod Antal at the helm, but he told MovieWeb that the mythology is very fertile and that we could be seeing a sequel or prequel to Predators:

"There are so many great ideas. Just following Laurence Fishburne's character (Noland) around in a prequel would be a great movie. Just the tales he tells in this movie alone, I want to see those experiences. That's why I wasn't precious even about the original script I had. Because once you come up with the idea of a Predator Planet, that Predators use as their hunting grounds and humans are involved somehow, the story ideas that you can come up with are so numerous that you can come up with any approach. So we already have several ideas that we can go with for a sequel. They would all be good ideas but we would probably put them together to see which one rises to the top, if we made another one."

Unfortunately, Rodriguez had no good news to report about the long-in-development sequel to Sin City:

"It's in the same place as always, I'm working on the script. I'm trying to actually find the time to do it because I know I'm doing Spy Kids 4: Armageddon next. ... But then I'll have an open slot so [Sin City 2] could go after that."

Rodriguez also said that he still plans to make a movie adaptation of Mike Allred's Mad Man comic book, which he has owned the rights to since 1998:

"Yeah that's still on the plate too. I love that project and I talk to Mike Allred about that all the time."

Predators stars Laurence Fishburne, Alice Braga, Adrien Brody, Topher Grace, Danny Trejo, Oleg Taktarov, Mahershalalhashbaz Ali and Louis Ozawa Changchien. It opens nationwide July 9th!

@wards: How do you know the OG Predator is in it? I saw a pic that looked a lot like it, but they kind of all look alike.

I guess he's just waiting till Rourke changes his mind back to never wanting to play Marv again. That really sucks. Do it while you got'em!

@antz1104: I know, that seems bold of him, but as a filmmaker, he has to speak with confidence or it's just that much harder to get funding for his next picture.

My only problem with Predators so far is that it seems to be paying too much of an homage to the original. The latest clips use the "turn around" line and show a big dude with a gattlin' gun tearing up the jungle, both right out of the OG movie. I hope that's where the similarities end. We need originality, not retread.

@LEEE: I see you're back to Tick-Cap, huh? How about a Tick-Thor? I haven't seen one of those yet. I agree with you, a Mad Man movie by Rodriguez would be s-i-c-k!

Brent @ true and I know, right? Like in the last one when they threw in "get to the chopper!" Make an original movie your own, and make so that ppl will remember lines from THIS one 20 years from now. I'm a huge fan and I'm hoping b/c they're going in a whole new direction that this will be awesome....But then I get a post traumatic AVP flashback.

@Username: Heh, good request. It makes sense, though. All types of predators (no pun intended) hunt when their prey is most active and we humans are pretty much diurnal (daywalkers).

@LEEE: Or, how about a Tick-Green Lantern?

@antz1104: I can understand the desire to pay tribute to the classics. But, like you said, your goal should be to create something that others down the road want to pay tribute to.

I always loved Han's "I've got a bad feeling about this" line, but they use it in every friggin' episode of Clone Wars now and it's really buggin' me.

Why does he need to write a script for Sin City 2? He didn't write one for Sin City 1. What, like a dozen lines were slightly different from the comic? Frank Miller writes the scripts. Story boards them too.

@wards - the guys in the trailer don't look like they're in the late 70's/early 80's.

@Logan-X: Got your facts a little messed up there, buddy. The new Alien movie is from the director of the first Alien, Ridley Scott, and it is a PREQUEL to the first movie. It's not a remake.

is there even enough material for a Sin City 2??

@ Shaman

Marv didn't really have anymore stories about him in Sin City. He popped up briefly in a couple other stories, but nothing of importance.

We need to see Hell and Back in Sin City 2. Don't know how they'll pull off the part where Wallace hallucinates, though.
AngelAragiel
AngelAragiel - 7/2/2010, 11:52 AM
There is enough material for a second and third movies: A dame to kill for, Hell and back, Wrong turn and wrong track, Just another saturday night, Silent night and some other shorter stories that could be included as well. And the script thing is because allegedly they (Miller and Rodriguez) were written an original story for the movie(if I don't bad recall).

Now I used to think that a sequel to Sin City was a must but now I feel that theres no need to risk a fail that way will keep Sin City in high regards.

Why didn't anyone ask him about Deadpool since he was offered the the job of director on that? He's waiting on Sin City 2 for Spy Kids 4, really? That's such a crap franchise that needs to be abondoned.

Or, maybe Zack Snyder...

This may just top all the Predator movies that came before it. Rodriguez is awesome as long as he doesn't put Tarentino in front of the camera. Tarentino can't act for $H!T. Can't wait for this one.

Watched Predators on Monday for the premiere in Singapore. Some might like it, others may not. Me, I'm fine with the movie. And no, its not a reboot nor a prequel. The event of the first movie is mentioned in the movie. So I can safely say that it's a sequel. It's a predator movie as worthy as the first one, finally.
