We may all still be waiting for Disney to bring Marvel's range of characters to Disneyland, but it seems Star Trek is a step ahead with an impressive new theme park announced today. Scheduled to open in 2014, it promises to take fans of the popular TV show, movies and comics into the sci-fi world like never before. As long as you can afford the flights that is..! Here are the full details, along with the first designs of the park from The Associated Press:

Fifteen years after "Trekkie" King Abdullah II briefly appeared in an episode of Star Trek, Jordan is planning to construct a $1.5-billion-dollar park themed on the cult American science fiction series. The "Red Sea Astrarium" will be built in the country's sole port of Aqaba, 350 kilometres (217 miles) south of Amman, spanning 184 acres (74.4 hectares), and will include a Star Trek-themed centre.

"Revolving around ancient history with Nabatean, Babylonian, British and Roman influences," the park is scheduled for opening in 2014, according to Jordan's Rubicon Group Holding (RGH), which announced the plan.

Bordering Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, Aqaba is a popular tourist centre and close to the ancient rose-red Nabatean city of Petra and Wadi Rum in the desert.
RGH said in a statement the park would include "technologically advanced attractions, five-star accommodation, captivating theatrical productions," and night-time spectacles.

It said RGH, CBS Consumer Products and Paramount Recreation will create the Star Trek centre, which "will deliver a variety of multi-sensory 23rd-century experiences, culminating with a state-of-the art space-flight adventure." According to RGH, the astrarium "will be the world's only place where there is a Star Trek attraction," after a similar facility in Las Vegas closed.

Work on the sequel to 2009's Star Trek is believed to be ongoing with director J.J. Abrams likely to return. Originally scheduled for release in Summer 2012, it is now unknown when we'll next see the iconic Starship Enterprise on the big screen.

Why do all these countries that can't afford to keep their own residents happy and healthy afford to make these extravagant tourist areas? Priorities!

Catwoman, it borders Israel.

The fact that it's all the way in Jordan is pretty lame.

Agreed, Ryguy. This clearly belongs in Vegas not Jordan. Aqaba is a lovely place for what it is - Petra & Wadi Rum are spectacular; I can't see that it needs to be ruined by American (no offense) crap.

I am a Star Trek fan btw, I just also happen to be against the homogenisation of the planet.

Why not spend the $1.5 billion on a REAL starship?

Oh wait, the urine stains from that large of an entry into this middle east peeing contest wouldn't be visible from Earth without then building the world's largest coin operated telescope!

Seriously though, if you are that into Star Trek why not assist in the advancement of the human race as Gene Roddenberry envisioned by bringing together an international space program with intentions to achieve what is currently believed to be impossible.

This thing belongs to ORLANDO.

It´s saddening that the money that should be feed his own population for centuries is being wasted on the whims of a king. It´s the same thing with Dubai.

(just rambling because my wife wouldn´t let me go to Jordan due to the risk of being hit by an israeli missile)

WTF? The only country in the Middle East I would ever consider visiting would be Israel. They need to bring back Star Trek: The Experience here in the states and open one in the UK for all of my CBM friends :)

@Show4God1 - LOL!

@marvel72 - Check out this theme park in South Korea:)

@Bar20 as a fellow citizen of said country, i completley agree. although if i was the Jordanian government, i'd be less concerned with terror and more with the fact that they have almost no water.

That article's a little off, it's not a $1.5 billion Star Trek theme park, it's just a Star Trek attraction IN a $1.5 billion theme park: http://trekmovie.com/2011/05/21/star-trek-attraction-to-be-part-of-2014-red-sea-resort-in-jordan/

Nimibro
Nimibro - 8/9/2011, 2:02 PM
@Bar20 i know what you mean, but said country sounded less awkward from my original comment (which sounded kinda retarded). anyways, Jordan's water problems are even worse than ours. the terror in Jordan isn't as bad as in countries like lebannon and syria, and now with the revolution in egypt that country as well, but their water problems are i think more concerning, and building a theme park there wouldn't help it (there will probably be at least one water attraction, you can see one in the picture above even).
Bar20
Bar20 - 8/9/2011, 2:56 PM
Well we too have water probelms but insted of building parks we build Desalinization of water facilitys from the sea..(Which cost us billions as well)
