Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci Reveal More Star Trek 2 Details!

Alex Kurtzman On How The Sequel Is Currently Developing:

"Well, we have broken the story, which is very exciting. I think one of the weird challenges that we’re facing on this one is that in many ways, with the first movie, I don’t think people knew what to expect, so when we were in the writing process, Bob and I really spent our time going to things that we loved about 'Trek' and it was a very unfiltered process. It felt intimate and small. We need to find our way back to the same kind of vibe that we had when we wrote the first one: What do we want to see here? What moved us about 'Trek'? Where can we go from where we left off?

Roberto Orci On Moving Past The Prequel And Their Inspiration:

"One of the big challenges is all of the characters are together now. A prequel is a pain in the butt, but one of the nice little advantages was that you get to meet the characters as you go through the story and they get to meet each other. We’re looking at a lot of the old episodes for inspiration, still. Whereas the last movie was all about breaking free from 'Star Trek' and its canon, now that we can do whatever we want, we still want it to feel like good ol’ 'Star Trek' even though it’s a new story.

Roberto Orci On Whether It's Part Of A Trilogy:

" I don’t know that we’ve ever thought of it in terms of a trilogy. We thought of the first one as, 'How do we tell how this happened the first time and how do we free it so that it can go on forever without stepping on what came before.' So, if you were thinking of this movie as a second act, yeah, you would think of it as an 'Empire Strikes Back' sort of story, but I’m not sure we’re thinking of it as a second act. I can’t speak for everybody on that, though.

Alex Kurtzman On How The Cast Will Interact With Each Other In The Sequel:

"We spend a lot of time talking about how — now that everyone is together — they all need really clear, defined moments. Moments that are specific to their characters, specific to way they interact with each other and also build on the dynamic of those amazing, amazing actors. It’s going to be joy for us."

Cool! They don't really go into any details but it is still cool to hear how the script is going.

Looking forward to seeing what they come up with. They did such a great job with the first film. I just wish they weren't waiting three years before we get the sequel -- kind of takes something away from the momentum they had going.

I pretty much KNOW this will be effing amazing.
Them along with JJ have a great understanding of what Star Trek was, and how to expand it to a larger audience.
I'm a total Trekker, but unlike a lot of the fans, I loved the reboot.
It didn't have anything really metaphorical about the story, which was big part of Star Trek, But I don't think that would've fit into the film. They did however introduce a lot of homages to the original.
Finally seeing Kirk cheat on the Kobayashi Maru was awesome.

Order of the best Star Trek movies IMO.
5.Search for Spock
4.Undiscovered Country
3.Final Frontier
2.Star Trek reboot
1.Wrath of Kahn

I hope they do more time travel at some point and bring back Shatner. Maybe like it's the entire new young crew but they get stuck with old ass Kirk, that would be awesome.

I was never a trekkie. (Star Wars for LIFE!) lol but the reboot was awesome. Plus it accomplished its goal: appeal to both older and newer audiences.

Great find Josh!

I don't know if I could be considered a Trekkie due to the fact that I was never fond of anything bur the original cast. However, I did and still do love the original shows and I think the reboot was fantastic. Can't wait to see if they can continue the tradition.

Perhaps now they'll tone down the characters. The film versions seemed to be caricatures of their original series counterparts.

Perhaps if they could also look at Star Trek physics too. The Star Trek universe has already had much mapped out so the Abram's team don't have to research much. Only Star Trek is Sci-Fi. Not Sci-Fantasy.

Other than that, keep up the good work, team.

I am a lifelong trekker. I've watched every series, except the animated series for some unknown reason, and only missed a handful of episodes. DS9 was the best.

My wife can't stand trek but we both loved the reboot and we are both looking forward to the next installment. We are also big Wars fans as well.

@SoulAllFlush: they forgot it with the first film and given the way of writing Science Fiction of Orci & Kurtzman I think that this time they will too, guys find too difficult to hire a scientific consultant.

The could approach it the same way as TOS reboot. Movie number one was the reboot and refresh, movies 2-4 can be the classic trilogy story arc. Just a thought.

@ Gunsmith The reboot was good, but I'm really annoyed @ the fact they made this alternate timeline. Just f... up the main stream timeline. Abrams could of breathed new life from the main stream, after Voyager or Star Trek: Nemesis. The books do a better job.

I really don't think we need Shatner, don't get me wrong i am a lifelong Trek fan but his time has been and gone. Let the new guys get on with it in this new universe. Shatner doesn't belong there, Pine is Kirk now........................

didn't like the first film that much and i hate these writers...they butchered Transformers. hopefully this new film won't have stupid scenes where people are jumping out of moving cars blasting beastie boys...

@deadpool72 Those are definitely the best. Lets hope they keep up the good work because Star Trek history shows that the second movie is always better. I also hope they do a new television show. Preferably original though I wouldn't mind one set in the New Frontier, Star Trek: Online, or Abrams universes.

Been a trekkie for years (yes before the 2009 film lol) I was skeptical about the reboot before it came out (though also VERY excited) I didn't like how they erased the TOS universe but that was my ONLY complaint! Beyond that- I LOVED what Abrams did with it. He took a dying franchise and breathed new life into it (much like how Nolan did with the Batman franchise) I am soooo stoked for the sequel. This and the Superman reboot are at the top of my list in terms of upcoming films.

Orehrepus - 11/30/2010, 7:36 PM
For me: this? Yes, top of my list.
Superman reboot? Not so much.
LOL!

@fullmetal:
I used to hate them too for what they did to Transformers while their previous work wasn't that impressive either. Being a hard-on trekkie (meaning, more than hardcore trekkie, LOL!) I was very nervous with these guys writing the Star Trek reboot.

It turned out that Star Trek redeemed these guys in my eyes. They produced such excellent script with great story and dialogues with no corny jokes that I started to believe they work upon orders.

If $hi++y directors order wham-bam explosions with dog humping and testicles jokes and opportunity to jiggle boobs in slo-mo, then that's the kind of script they'd provide.

If good directors order smart story with smart dialogue and funny smart jokes, then that'd be the kind of script they provide.

IMO.
