One of the best kept secrets in all of Hollywood has been, who is Benedict Cumberbatch ("Sherlock") playing in Star Trek Into Darkness? If you look below you'll see that Entertainment Weekly has spoiled the surprise with the headline "Kirk & Khan." So, it looks like Cumberbatch will be playing the classic Star Trek villain, originally played by Ricardo Montalban ("Fantasy Island").

Thanks to Michael "Nerdy Geek" for spotting it!

Khan Noonien Singh is a fictional villain in the American Star Trek science fiction franchise, portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán. The character first appeared in "Space Seed" (1967), a first season episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, and reappeared as the antagonist in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

According to the backstory provided in "Space Seed", Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman from India who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. After being revived from suspended animation in 2267 by the crew of the USS Enterprise, Khan attempts to capture the starship, but is thwarted by James T. Kirk and exiled on Ceti Alpha V to create a new society with his people. In Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, set fifteen years after "Space Seed," Khan escapes his exile and sets out to seek revenge upon Kirk. - wikipedia

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis. With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction. As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS - written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and directed/produced by J.J. Abrams. Returning for the sequel are Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, John Cho, Bruce Greenwood, Simon Pegg, Zoë Saldana, and Anton Yelchin. They are joined by new cast members Benedict Cumberbatch, Alice Eve and Peter Weller. The film beams into theaters May 17th, 2013.

Could be true, maybe. Magazines have been wrong before. If it is true then this will be a new take on the original shows episode where they meet Khan and he tries to take over the ship.

no surprise, kind of hoped it wasn't kahn and a new character "John Harrison" is probably the name he uses to infiltrate starfleet

I don't think this warrants a spoiler. He's the main villian. Unless it's a plot twist that he's really Khan.

Your spotter caught a mistake on the website. JJ Abrams has not yet confirmed whether the villain, John Harrison, is in fact Khan.

Honestly don't give crap what the characters name is it, It can be Khan, Rajesh Ramayan "Raj" Koothrappali, Jesus, John Harrison or [frick]ing Dave. What matters is its [frick]ing Benedict "Sherlock" Cumberbatch playing a [frick]ing villain, guaranteed awesomeness!

Honestly the worst one was Tom Hiddleston at Kapow saying he wasn't going to be in Avengers in front a couple of hundred people. Straight up lie and every one believed it for second hence the reason why the dudes perfect for Loki.

Hmmm. I think this was a mistake. ..and by that I mean I don't think EW have a notion who he is playing, they just went with an incorrect headline. But we'll see.

If it's a spoiler to report that Khan is the villian in Star Trek 2, then (just looking down at the recent news articles, on CBM) it's also a spoiler to say that Dormammu is in Marvel Now! and that Dog Logan is in Wolverine and the X-Men. No, it's news not a spoiler.

dont understand why abrams always has to be so secretive with his movies, did it with cloverfield and super 8 and this movie. His reveals are always so underwhelming, the super 8 monster was a huge letdown for all the secracy, even if this hadn't been revealed, no one would have been surprised if cumberbatch was revealed to be kahn during the movie. He better not do this with star wars, it's getting old

Wait, Isn't Khan Noonien Singh suppose to be a ethnic Indian and the Eugenics Wars and the launch of the Botany Bay took place in the late 20th century.. over a hundred years before Abrams rebooted and splintered the timeline? How is he now a Caucasian in this timeline?

Uhm...maybe the website got it wrong....there are such things as interns making mistakes.

Even so, lame writers = lame ideas = lame plot hole infested films.

If I'm not mistaken isnt Khan suppose to be Indian? I mean his full name is Khan Noonien Singh, so how in the frijoles does a white british actor play an indian ? besides until I see his man pecks, I'm team Ricardo LOL he had awesome man pecks.
