Edgar Ramirez Front-Runner To Replace Benicio Del Toro In STAR TREK 2; Jordi Molla Considered

Talks broke down with Benicio del Toro for the lead villain role in Star Trek 2, and it now down to front-runner Edgar Ramirez (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Jordi Molla (Columbiana). Is one of them our new KHAAAAN?!

Variety has broken the news that director J.J. Abrams is already narrowing down his hunt for the lead villain in Star Trek 2, with their sources telling them that Edgar Ramirez is the front-runner and Jordi Molla is also being considered. At this point, no offers are said to have been made. While it's unlikely that American audiences will be familiar with Ramirez, he was at one point said to be up for the role of General Zod in Man of Steel. Molla has starred in such blockbuster fare as Columbiana and Knight and Day.

Abrams is only looking at Spanish.Latino actors..but it isn't Khan..he said so!!

The 'bad guy' chosen for the film is more important than the actor who'll play him/her, so it's a moot point.

I always confuse Edgar Ramirez with Efren Ramirez. AKA, Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite.

@Ror. Didn't JJ say that "Benicio isn't Khan" two days after negotiations reportedly broke down? IE: Khan, yes, is in the movie, but Benicio isn't playing him because negotiations fell through.

I'm still surprised that Guy-Liner from Lost, AKA the Mayor of Gotham City, hasn't been rumored for Khan in the trades. He's a dead ringer for Montalvan.

Also, was Khan necessarily Latino in ST2?

santoanderson - 12/7/2011, 3:19 PM
Then why are they going after all these Latinos?

And if Khan was Indian, why was he always surrounded by these anglo Abercrombie & Fitch types?

To be fair Ricardo Montalbán played Khan in the original movie & he was Mexican. So its seems only fitting to go the Latino/Mexican route.

Also Khan wasn't Indian he was an Augment, created by Data's Great Great Grandfather Dr Soong after the Neogeneis wars. They were looking to improve the human genome, higher intellect, strength, but also had more aggression.

I think i'll take the guy with the Trek avatar's word for it! But yeah the impression I always got was that Khan was supposed to look a bit like and mirror the Native American's feelings of anger and hatred after being forced from his home, seeing his loved ones die etc. Might be wrong!

@Spock: "To be fair Ricardo Montalbán played Khan in the original movie & he was Mexican. So its seems only fitting to go the Latino/Mexican route."

Why is that fitting....? If they did a remake of "Teahouse of the August Moon," should they cast an Italian-American dude to play a Japanese dude, just because Brando did it in the original....?

Wrong-headed ethnic casting in 1967 is still wrong-headed ethnic casting in 2011, if you don't learn from the mistakes of the past.

@Spock - Get your ST facts straight! Khan Noonien Sing and the guy who created Data, Dr Noonian Soong are NOT related. There's someting like 400 years between the creation of Khan and the Creation of Data, nobody's great grandfather will span that time.

And further more, Khan is Asian-Indian, just because Ricardo Montablan played him and is a Mexican does not mean they have to get a latin actor to play the role again. There's enough decent Asian-Indians working in Hollywood to do the role justice, Sendhil Ramamurthy and Naveen Andrews both come to mind.

Edgar Ramirez or Cliff Curtis wouldnt be bad choice but i would go with Javier Bardem or Mark Strong (I know! I know! Strong has played lots of villains already but seriously he has the perfect menacing appearance for this role!)

Too bad Faran Tahir already had a role in the first movie.
He would have been awesome Khan.

Khan was a genetically engineered Asian-Indian . He wasn't Latino or Hispanic. If Khan is the villain they should get someone with the right genetic makeup.

Khan ruled part of Earth during the Eugenics War in the 90's (I guess we missed that). Arik Soong, the great grandfather of Noonian Soong, Data's creator, had nothing to do with Khan. He existed during the 22nd century. Arik Soong did create Augments which are the 22nd century equivalent of the 20th century supermen such as Khan.
