Courtesy of EW, we have some non-Star Wars talk from J.J. Abrams who sounds a bit apologetic about the long wait for Star Trek Into Darkness. Plus, Roberto Orci acknowledges the unlikelihood that Abrams returns to direct the third Star Trek entry.

At a press event at Bad Robot in Santa Monica, Califronia, J.J. Abrams speaks about Star Trek Into Darkness and the lengthy wait for the film.

Abrams: It’s not decades, but it’s long enough that you do have to remind people what the thing is and where it’s at,” he says. “It would have been better probably for the studio [if we'd put it out earlier], because it would have been fresher in people’s minds. But I’m happy we didn’t rush it. It wouldn’t have been a better movie if it came out earlier, I know that.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Chris Pine speak about the secrecy Abrams likes to maintain around his films.

Cumberbatch: People care,” he says. “They really, really care, and they’re engaged by this — and as long as I don’t say something by accident, then it’s all to the good.

Pine: When you get on the train of a tentpole movie like this, there is so much expected of you when it comes to promoting the film. There’s a huge learning curve, and it’s not easy. There’s the excitement, the questions asked, the fact that this is Star Trek — and the fact that J.J. keeps secrets like no one else.

Producer Roberto Orci speaks about Abrams decision to helm the next Star Wars film.

Orci: For J.J. this is achieving a childhood dream — Star Wars is what got him in the business,” he says. “So watching him go to his Super Bowl like this? It’s genuinely joyful for me. [But] as a guy who is in love with Star Trek and in love with this version of it? It puts a scared lump in my throat. It’s like hearing one of the band members is going to do a solo album. I know Star Wars is going to be better for it. And I suspect Star Trek will be fine with the rest of us still here.

Star Trek has always been done multiple ways by different people. I mean, there's five different television series (even though TNG and Original Series are the best). Star Trek will live on, but hopefully they can make this an Abrams trilogy somewhat

Star Trek will be fine with or without JJ's involvement. I mean come on the franchise has been around 47 years and JJ's only been involved the last 4 years. If it survived without Gene Roddenberry it can survive without JJ Abrahms.

if harrison is khan, it's gonna be the dumbest most idiotic secret ever kept. hardcore star trek fans wouldn't care and joe public could give a [frick] as to who who khan is. after all this hype and secrecy, harrison best be mother[frick]ing han solo.

^ I COMPLETELY agree with your statement.

After all the years we waited and all the b.s secrecy, if he ends up being Khan. I will be sorely disappointed.

If he intends to direct Star Trek 3, there's going to be an even longer wait for it than there was for Into Darkness.

We've been hearing Episode VII will possibly be released in 2016, so he probably wouldn't be able to start working on Star Trek 3 until late 2016 or early 2017. With that schedule, the earliest it could be released is in 2018.

So you're looking at a minimum of 5 years between the Star Trek films, if he intends to continue directing.

[frick] Starwars. There, I said it. This is a huge slap in the face to Star Trek fans. And don't give us the "Star Trek fans never wanted Abrams for Star Trek, before the movie came out." The only movie people really remember him making before Star Trek was Mission Impossible 3. And honestly, Star Wars is the most overrated franchise in history.'

Bryan Singer made two great X-Men films, then he went to the rival franchise and made Superman Returns. When that failed, he came back and made X3.

Abrams will be back to produce. He'll grow, whether wanted or no, this sort of George Lucas sychophantia(?) that enables only "yes's" from his underlings. :-P He'll produce, the same team will write. Let's hope Paramount doesn't get green-eyed and lowball potential new directors..,
'cause let's face it.., whether you enjoyed it or not.., ST 3 could be Alien 3. All this being said with part 2 not even out yet, but anyone saying morale and hype is not important for a film or it's merchandising, huh.., yeah: Since JJ announced he's doing SW next and not fully leaving ST has produced an ill taste in the dorkus palette. All my friends(shop employees and street geeks(?) feel the same). Hope the sequel is good! In the same bad science way that ST has been since it's inception. Every era of ST had bad science.., pick forehead appliance and stick with it folks. :-P

Even generic fans love Quinto! He's perfectly cast! Pine is great to and his upcoming potential superstar schedule would be the only thing that would make ST 3 impossible or difficult. Let's face it, ST 2 is going to make enough for a sequel. I want Cumberpatch to be so cold that it sends chills down your spine and the film does look like it could be pretty damn entertaining. I'll live with what appears to be Spock cliff jumping off a futuristic skyscraper to land on top a Klingon fighter class ship(?). Surely that's not Bones doing it. :-P In another dimension Urban is the perfect Batman casting.
