Last week we had word from insiders that Benicio Del Toro was the favorite to play the villain in JJ Abrams Star Trek sequel. In the following interview with MTV the director not only confirms his interest in nabbing the versatile actor for a role, but says negotiations..sorry, discussions are already underway..

"Well, we're just in negotiations, we're in discussions. It's not even negotiations — just in discussion. But I would love to work with him. I've wanted to work with him for years, and this felt like a good opportunity."

But assuming Del Toro does sign up, who will he be playing? It's likely that he will be the villain of the piece of course, but which villain? Abrams has already said that Trek favorite Khan Noonien Singh is very unlikely. Rumor suggested a Klingon last week too, maybe a human this time? Unfortunately Abrams remains tight lipped but suggests it won't be too long before all is revealed..

"It's too early to talk about what the role is, but he's such an amazing actor. He's so versatile. He could sort of do anything. Except play Uhura, I wouldn't buy that."

"As soon as we know who it's going to be—and I'd love it to be him—that'll be public knowledge,"

It was never going to be Khan in this one... They just did a thinly veiled version of Khan in the last one, only obsessed with Spock instead of Kirk. I'm looking forward to the next version, and hoping he'll be obsessed with Scotty or Uhura.

Seriously, I'm all for a sequel to Star Trek... Just less painfully stupid this time, please. Of course, with the Transformers writing team behind it again, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Seriously though, I think he's gonna be a Klingon. Doesn't need much makeup to look like one right now. He'd be a pretty good Khan too. And he'd be an amazing Uhura.

It's hard for me to picture this guy in a Star Trek movie, however, I liked the last one so I'm sure JJ has something very special in mind for us.

Hopefully, this sequel will have an actual story to it, not a series of impossibly contrived coincidences with plausibility gaps you could drive a starship through.

Star Trek used to be intelligent science-fiction. I would like to see that aspect of the franchise return.

Del Toro is an amazing actor, and I disagree with Abrams. He could totally pull off playing Uhura and sadly would be better looking than Saldana anyway.
