John Cho Talks STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS

The plot of Star Trek Into Darkness is still shrouded in secrecy, and we have yet to see so much as an official still or piece of footage from J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated sequel. With all of the cast members from the last film set to return, and a few new notable additions, fans have an awful lot to look forward to. In a recent interview with IGN Movies, John Cho ('Sulu') talks in detail about returning for the follow-up and the new cast members. You can read his thoughts on the film being shot in IMAX by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

On Returning To The World Of Star Trek After Such A Long Period Of Time Since The First Movie:

It was weird. It was embarrassingly familiar! We immediately started up with the same jokes that we run into ground. But that’s the kind of experience that’s so unique. The people you go on that journey with, you’re bonded with forever. It’s very special to come back to something like that. I think we got closer than we did on the first one even because we had that thing going. It was a lot of fun. I think the second one may be magnificent, baby. You can quote me on that. I think it may be amazing.

On Moving Past The Origin Story To Pick Up With The Now Established Crew:

You know, I think J.J. and I had a conversation about that. That was the difficulty of the first movie, getting all these narratives started. There’s a larger narrative of the story, and then there’s all these origin tales -- not just for the unit, but for each particular person. I think this movie is different from the first one in that we can get started on the story right away. It feels to me -- having read it and having done it -- like a more expansive story because we can devote more screen time to it.

On Welcoming New Actors Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) And Alice Eve (Men In Black 3):

Yeah, I guess looking back on it, it did put us in the position of being hosts. But they didn’t need hosts. They’re whip-smart, amazing people. They’re so good, such good actors. Having said that, they blended in right away. They were right there giving us s**t back and forth. It was a lot of fun. I’m embarrassed to say how much fun it was because we did get paid. They did cut us checks! So maybe I shouldn’t emphasize how fun it was.

Wow, John Cho managed to just talk the entire franchise to 'darkness'? What does that even mea...

Oh wait. It's just the shitty title of the next film.

Lt Sulu actually outranks cadet Kirk, so does Ensign Checkov. I am a HUGE treker but that plot along with giving fleets flagship to a person who has not even graduated from the Academy just irritates me.

@daveB: The Enterprise wasn't a flagship at that time. People get bumps in rank all the time for different reasons, whether they have enough training or not. It's what you can demonstrate, not what a piece of paper says. And Hollywood does this kind of thing all the time:

Armageddon
Independence Day
Battleship
Transformers
Aliens ("He can't make that kind of decision. He's just a grunt... no offense." "None taken. I say we take off, nuke the planet from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.")

Etc., etc....

To be fair your a bit off base with your comparisons. Aliens followed the chain of command. Battleship, as ridiculous as it was, did as well, though how Taylor's character even got that high in the food so quickly is baffling. Armageddon didn't promote any military personnel only civilians, same with Transformers. In the case of Independence Day, it was the end of the world, humanity was kind of a rag tag resistance, so a few did get a slight bump, but I gotta agree, Star Trek does kinda jump the shark with the whole fresh out the academy, get's his own ship bit. Still, it was a great movie so why nit pick the details...

@Luminus. I have to disagree. A naval Academy cadet in the third year would not get command of any ship, let alone a capitol ship no matter if he saved the universe or not.

Aliens is a good example. Hicks did not get promoted, he was next in line, when he got back he would not get command a platoon, he would get a one grade promotion at most.

How long was Pike in Starfleet before he got command of the Enterprise?

Still love the movie, just wish they had stretched the time out, have him on the USS Republic and coming back for command training where the Kobiashi test took place.

I'm really looking forward to more people complaining about the title...because that really makes the movie. :o| Sounds like things are moving in a good direction. I really liked the first film, hoping this one is better!

He was the biggest casting surprise of the first film & now that I've seen him in action, very pleaded John Cho is Sulu! He chooses good work and deserves the praise! Anyone catch him in Solaris('02)?

Kirks battlefield promotion; the only real complaint I had with the first. I'd have to start a blog to assassinate the science of this TV Show based film series. Explosions! Hell yeah! Explosions in space? Hell.., uhh., hell yeah!

Yeah, I've always thought they should have ended it with him being promoted to maybe Lieutenant at the end of the movie.

So, now that four years have passed (as Pike said he would in that amount of time), he's given command of the Enterprise at the beginning of the next movie. Then they could go into him becoming the Captain that we all know.

Grif gave comment to two Star Trek articles? GOD, I love you so much, man! Thanks. It really means a lot to me!

@Splenda: you should bet ten THOUSAND bucks! You won't lose it!

Back to the article, I don't know where my brain was wandering off to. At first, I thought they were talking about Alice Kriege (perhaps because she had a role in one of Star Trek movies before) and I have to agree with BattlinMurdock here. Then, half way through the comments, I realize it was Alice EVE. And instantly I disagree with Battlin!

She's gorgeous and sizzling hot! I fap to her animated gif!

Anyway, this sequel will burn theaters down!
