The following may not come as a surprise to many (given Michael Giacchino's frequent collaborations with director JJ Abrams), but the Oscar winning composer has officially confirmed that he'll orchestrate the score for the upcoming sequel, set to begin production next January and to be release sometime in 2013. Below is what Giacchino told Coming Soon while promoting the DVD/Blu-Ray release of Abrams' latest film, Super 8...

"Yes, I'll be back," Giacchino told ComingSoon.net last night at a home video release event for the duo's last collaboration, Super 8. "I'll be there just as soon as they finish it."

Giacchino is currently scoring Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Dec. 21) and Andrew Stanton's John Carter (March 9, 2012).

Are you glad that Giacchino is returning to score the Star Trek sequel? Sound off your thoughts below in the usual place.

The currently untitled Star Trek sequel is set to be released sometime in 2013.

Yeah I'm glad to hear this too. The score for the first film's fantastic, his scores for Incredibles, Super 8, Up and Speed Racer were great too. And yeah, he'd do a great job with Man Of Steel.

Great news!!!He's a brilliant composer- I have the scores for all his work with Pixar and the Star Trek score he did is just brilliant. Yeah he'd be great for Man of Steel but I personally wanted him to do the score for The Amazing Spider-Man- mix the jazzy score he did for The Incredibles with the epicness of the score for Star Trek and it would be just amazing! :-D

I'm happy, but not surprised in the least, Giacchino always does Abrams movies. And does a great job at it. And @0TheQuestion0 he did the last Star Trek film.

Loved Michael Giacchino´s work on the first one.
Also loved how he insert the original TV theme into the soundtrack.

But, of course, being demanding already, it would be also awesome that he´d include the themes composed by Jerry Goldsmith, from Star Trek I,V and VIII and the tv series ST:The next generation.

After all, they are almost filling the time gap between the end of the original TV series and the first movie.

I knew STAR TREK was going to be good like, 1 minute into the movie. Maybe less. The trumpets in the openeing are beyond epic. Two years to wait is a shame.
