Now that J. J. Abrams is officially directing Star Trek 2, we can expect a lot of new information and casting news. StarTrek.com has an exclusive interview with the co-writer of 2009 film, Roberto Orci, and Mike Johnson, who wrote the first issue (Star Trek #1: "Where No Man Has Gone Before") of IDW Publishing's new series. Below is a part of the interview and for the whole thing just follow the link at the bottom of the page.

Orci briefly said: "The cast is excited. We have a director. We’ve started scouting locations. The second time around the crew is already together from the start, so we can jump right into the adventure."

Johnson mentioned how the new comic series will reveal some details, and probably new characters that will appear in Abrams' Star Trek 2:

"The first few issues of the series are adaptations of TOS episodes, as the “new” crew encounters some of the same threats the original crew did, but with differences that reflect things like Kirk being a younger captain and Spock losing his homeworld. As we get closer to the next movie, the stories will begin to foreshadow the events of the movie, such as possibly introducing new characters we will see onscreen... pun very much intended. Bob and I have discussed the major beats of the next movie, which is a great help in laying clues in the comic. We have very few secrets, that I know of anyway.

So, what do you think? Are you excited about this new IDW series and Star Trek 2? Share your thoughts below...

The pun is "on screen", as in on screen in the movie, and on screen on the bridge when they communicate with other ships and the captain says "on screen".

Doesn't matter what Orci and company say up front. They still screw the characters, take the "Trek" out the story and then the production team does a 'Buck Rogers' on the design.

SCREW THEM!

They could´ve taken the same actors, the same oversized ApplestorePRISE, the same shaky cameras and set the movie in a movie POST-VOYAGER keeping the timeline intact.

That Nu-Spock could´ve been Spock´s grandson, Kirk´s grandnephew, etc etc

But NOOO, they had the assumption to be better than Harlan Ellison, DC Fontana and others.

It´s a great movie, mind you, but it wouldn´t hurt to make it legit. I still prefer original 616 trek than Ultimate Trek.

That was a really weak and bad pun. He almost knocked this project off of the pedastal that it is sitting on in my mind.

@Plasticman

... yet another example of the "brilliant scribe" he believes himself to be. No doubt in my mind he believes his own bull.

@ Nomis and headlopper - Wasn't the entire Klingon fleet destroyed in the first movie. Uhura picked up the distress signal. If anything this may lead to an Alliance between the Federation and Klingon Empire.
