Alex Kurtzman has given an update on the filming of the highly anticipated Star Trek Sequel. He says that it's going "unbelievably well" and that the "finish line is in sight". He also has some very nice things to say about new cast addition Benedict Cumberbatch. The Sherlock actor, who will play the still unnamed villain, is described as "magnetic"..

"He's incredible. What he does with language is incredible. His training is amazing and he's so magnetic, he holds the screen in any size frame, he really is a joy to watch."

After a bit of gushing over the movie's director J.J Abrams, Kurtzman goes on to talk about the plot of the sequel. He gives very little away, but does reveal that although the crew of The Enterprise might have seemed like a well oiled machine by the end of the last movie, we can expect a bit of conflict this time around too as they continue to learn to work together..

"Without spoiling anything, the challenge is that you don't want to jump too far ahead and assume that just because they got together they're all comfortable with each other. They're still all working out their kinks and still becoming the bridge crew that we remember from the series. That's still very much alive and look, any good sequel is about the challenge that the group faces in order to become the unified team and I think that that challenge in this movie is going to be hopefully amazing."

Abrams Star Trek was a fun movie, but as a Star Trek nerd I had a few problems with the characterization of Kirk (Everything just falls right into place and he becomes the Capt. of the Enterprise like right after graduating from the academy, whereas the original Kirk's backstory was that he worked hard and did a bunch of badass shit and completely earned his command at fairly young age).

Also, the science is the movie is [frick]ing retarded by Star Trek standards. All they had to do was hire a physicist. [frick]ing Thor hired one.

I understand that this is high level nerd shit and probably no one else cares. It was a fun movie. I still enjoy it, it's just not quite the same as the best Star Trek to me. I do have high hopes for the new one, Benedict Cumberbatch is fantastic.

So, the other day, I named my coffee table the Enterprise. Is it now part of Star Trek canon? Nope. Just like this new round of films. Names alone not make something 'Trek.

@pintoman - You're harsh dude. A hard core Trekkie no doubt. Not criticizm BTW.
But ya know, it could have been worse. The new ST created a world that Trekkies and non-Trekkies, as well as a whole new generation of people, can get into.

But I understand your feelings. SW geek here, and felt disgusted by the prequels.

This is tied with Man Of Steel as my most anticipated film for 2013. First film was truly amazing, one of the best in the genre.

@headlopper

The difference is,
the prequels were bad movies.
Last one was mediocre

The new Trek is not a bad movie.

On the off chance anyone is interested in what I mean about the science, there's a good article on it here: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/49990 written by a physicist and Star Trek nerd.

The Star Wars prequels were good, especially the third one which is on par with the originals.

@dellamorte1872

...This dude is EVERYWHERE near Benecio Del Toro, the difference being his lesser exposure to an American audience.

Thankfully, with breaks like these, Benedict Cumberbatch is becoming a household name in the states, which is fantastic. I'm tired of seeing the same, tired out hack American actors being shoved down our throats in sci-fi/action films.

Abrams reboot/adaptation of TOS isn't bad, per se, but, as someone who grew up watching William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, and DeForest Kelley as the original space-trotting troika respectively, there's just nothing else that'll ever compare for me.

Enjoyed Star Trek, but to keep the essence of what Star Trek is alive, there are a couple of necessary elements.

It should be exciting, but Star Trek is not just about space battles. It is about exploring new worlds, etc. You know the lines

Also, Star Trek should have an overall optimistic message. Not Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farms, but about the possibility of being a society for good, even when their is evil out there.

That's my two sense. I am all for action movies or I wouldn't be on this site, but Star Trek should include more than that.

Really looking forward to this movie; first one was great visually and an unique way to tackle a franchise reboot or continuation. Also, adding Benedict Cumberbatch will raise this Star Trek a WHOLE new level and push the rest of the cast, too.
