Star Trek: Anton Yelchin Looks Towards the Sequel

Anton Yelchin, who portrayed Chekov in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek (and will be seen in October as Charlie Brewster in the Fright Night remake), sat down with MTV to discuss the appeal of that film and shared some thoughts on the sequel, scheduled for a summer 2012 release.

JJ Abrams should definitely do Silver Surfer.

And new Star Trek was cool, I didn't find it as "great" as everyone else did. I'm with LEEE, Star Wars is still better. I didn't like it in the advertisements for the new Star Trek that they were saying it was this generations Star Wars, because it isn't.

I can't wait for the new Trek. The latest one was just a fun ride and good 2 hour escape from reality. That is all I ask for in a good movie.

See, this is exactly what I'm talking about.

Sure, JJ Abrams finally managed to make a Star Trek film that appealed to non-Trek fans. But the problem is it's "Star Trek" in name only. They completely and utterly contorted and wrecked the franchise. And practically every single plot point was stolen from previous Trek stories.

I would've much rather have had Star Trek die after "Enterprise" than to have Abrams & Co. continue with their new lowest-common-denominator iteration.

and @LEE, that pic sums up exactly why I despise the film. They turned Star "Trek" into Star "Wars".

Nice!

I really like the new Star Trek!

I'm a Trek fan from way back and
I really think this did homage to
the original while making it more
up-to-date!

He didn't make a Star Trek Film, He remade Star Wars with a Star Trek coat on it. All the key plot points form SW:ANH are what makes up the so called new Star Trek to make it more like a Star Wars film and nothing like Star Trek.

1: Big ship chasing little ship in the opening scene, escape pods.. SW!!
2: Hero with a destiny, talks to old man who knew his father and tells him he needs to leave his home and join space establishment to seek adventure.. SW!
3: Big ship that destroys planets threatening the galaxy.. SW!
4: Big Battle at the end and the victors receive their medals in a massive ceremony... SW!

The plot was dumb er than any ST episode, one Star Fleet ship being destroyed changed the entire universe! Even changed Spocks' life on Vulcan and made him more human, how, why? He's not remotely connected to Earth or Star Fleet until he has grown up, how would one ship change his life let alone everyone elses. How does Kirk who hasn't even been in space before stowing away on the Enterprise end up a fully fledged captain by the end of the day. It takes years of service at different ranks like Lieutenant, Commander etc before you can become an experienced captain, only in SW can this happen ala Lando Calrissian and Jar Jar Binks! That movie was another dumb action comedy for the masses that required you to switch off your brain just like Green Hornet, Sherlock Holmes and all the other brainless action Comedies Hollywood makes as a fail-safe to making actual proper intelligent adaptations. They know the average filmgoer is dumb and will fall for it every time!

@DDD long time fan, huh? Paid Homage huh?

Explain to me how Chekov who is the youngest and lowest ranked out of the established crew and who only joined the ship in the second season. Manages to have a position aboard the Enterprise bridge crew before Kirk's ever even been in space! How does the destruction of one ship change Spocks entire Vulcan life before he even came to Star Fleet even though Spock would have been at SF 40 years before Kirk because of his long Vulcan lifespan, that ship being destroyed would have happened in his adulthood! Why does Spock have sexual relations with his cadets when such a thing is strictly forbidden in all establishments let alone in Star Fleet? What happened to his Love for T'Pring and the Pon Farr which is the only time he has any such emotions surface? Why is Uhura ordering drinks with Cardassian names even though they won't meet the Cardassians until Picard's time in the next 40 years? Why would Scotty become an comedic idiot because Kirks dad died in a ship? Why did none of the Star Fleet policies of peaceful solutions come into effect at the end when the Enterprise bridge crew happily destroyed the Romulan ship while almost laughing to themselves. Why is the Enterprise being built on Earth down the road from Kirks home? Plus the Enterprise was in service before Kirk was born! And if a Romulan ship from the Future comes into the past, why did they not go to Romulus and warn them of the danger that was to happen and give their people the benefits of their advanced technology instead of waiting 25 years for Kirk to grow up and Spock to appear by coincidence out of the future so they can finally get revenge?

This isn't paying homage to ST, it's called contrived nonsense and is below the intelligence of an average Star Trek episode script let alone the bad movies they made in the past. One ship being destroyed does not make that level of change to an entire universe, ships get destroyed in ST all the time, the universe doesn't change every time they have a ship battle! Especially since most of the crew on that ship survived and went home, barely anything would have changed since the Romulan ship also disappeared for 25 years! They didn't update anything, they just dumbed it all down for simple minds who are easy to please with jokes and action!

The first half of the new star trek film is better than all three star wars prequels.

Ceejay-- Details! Bah! New Universe dude.

@ceejay...You nailed it bro. The new Trek is a horrific abomination of all that we long time Trekkies hold near and dear. Abrams failed us all.

@Ajax....don't forget the episode where Kirk was split into two by the transporter. You get to see his base emotions and attitudes.

New Star Trek 2 will probably have Kirk promoted to admiral after two weeks commanding the Enterprise.

JackBauer - 1/24/2011, 2:50 PM
@Ceejay - When the Romulans destroyed the Kelvin it had far reaching consequences across the galaxy. The effect the crews lives would've had on the galaxy was changed forever. It changed evryone's "future" from that point on.

It certainly affected where and when the Enterprise was built. I'm sure production was delayed on this class of ship to build some of the others seen in the film.

As for Spock, he's always had trouble keeping his human side in check. It was a constant battle for him not to let his emotions out because of his half-human heritage. And Spock was not in Starfleet 40 years before Kirk. In the proper timeline Spock was born in 2230 and graduated from the Academy only a few years before Kirk, who was born in 2233.

As for ordering a Cardassian drink, there was a war between the two parties approx. 90 years after Kirk and crew, but the date of first contact between the Federation and the Cardassian Union is unknown.

You're entitled to your opinion, and I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just pointing out some inconsistencies with why you don't like it. Maybe if you take these items in consideration you'll be able to appreciate the movie more. I've been a Trek fan for about 26 years, since before the Next Generation ever aired. I've seen every episode of every series and every movie multiple times and I have no problem with it. Just enjoy it as a fun movie.
Knightstalker
Knightstalker - 1/24/2011, 7:07 PM
@JackBauer... the destruction of the Kelvin may or may not have had any influence on where the Enterprise was built. My guess is....it didn't. I'm sure those shipyards had been there for a very long time.

You got the part about Spock right. He always had difficulty with his human side. It took death and rebirth to finally be at peace with himself.

Agreed on the Cardassians, but I doubt the Federation knew about the Cardies during Kirk's time.

The only thing I have to take you to task on is simply this. Just because you can accept this new version which has completely crapped all over Roddenberry's vision, don't expect the rest of us to fall in line with it. There are those of us out there that feel that Abrams could have made a great movie without screwing with the canon as much as he did.
JackBauer
JackBauer - 1/25/2011, 10:32 AM
@Knightstalker - I respect your right not to like it. I just don't see it as crapping all over Roddenberry's vision. It's an alternate universe. The original universe is still intact.

@Ajax - It has never been stated that Vulcans only mate ever seven years during Pon farr, only because of biological reasons they HAVE to mate every seven years. He can still get his freak on anytime he wants. Because Spock is half human he still has human emotions that he struggles with as I mentioned before. In this alternate timeline it seems he has a more diffucult time controlling his emotions than he did in the proper timeline.

Don't get me wrong guys, there were plenty of things I didn't like about the movie:

Yelchin was horrible as Chekov. Yea, I know he's Russian but he still sucked.

The fact that Kirk went from a Cadet to Captain just like that didn't seem very believeable even though he did stop the bad guys that took out out a fleet, destroyed Vulcan and was about to destroy Earth.

I didn't like that fact that they used a factory for Engineering.

There were some other things but overall I think they did a great job making this movie. You don't have to agree.
