Rorschach01's review of new JJ Abrams Star Trek movie...

Review Opinion

I have only ever been a casual Trek fan. I enjoyed the original show when i was a kid because of the dynamic between Kirk and Spock. I also enjoyed a few eps of the Next Generation and its many spin offs, but i also hated a few! The movies have been awful, decent and very good...In the case of Wrath Of Khan and First Contact excellent. But this new movie is really something special!

Its been hyped up so much that while i knew i would enjoy it, i was also afraid of leaving a bit disappointed..I didnt. It was better than i ever expected.

It begins with James T Kirks birth and his journey from angry young man to Starfleet cadet. This is contrasted with Spocks repressed childhood and his struggle to keep his emotions in check. But we all know where these 2 end up. I dont want to go into the plot too much because its very difficult not to give away spoilers if i do. But the crew of the Enterprise(for reasons i wont go into) find themselves in conflict with a vengeful Romulan called Nero (a brilliant Eric Bana) and Kirk and Spock must put their considerable differences aside and work with the fledgling crew to save Earth and come out in one piece.

The cast are pretty much perfect. I had issue with Chris Pine after seeing the trailers and thought him far too boyish looking and annoying but he actually makes a great Kirk once you see everything in context. (he is still just a tad annoying!). Zach "sylar" Quinto would have run away with the movie if it were not for Karl Urban as Dr Mcoy who screams for more screen time in the next movie. Zoe Saldanna is a sexy, assured Uhura. Jon Cho an ass kicking Sulu. My only problem cast wise was Anton Yelchin as Checkov. Hes not bad exactly but his accent is far too cartoonish and he really hasnt got that much to do. Simon Pegg suffers similarly with lack of screen time but is great comic relief when hes around.

The action scenes are awe inspiring. Space battles, sword fights, punch ups..theres never a dull moment. And even when it does slow the pace the cast ensure that the quieter moments of drama work just as well

All in all i cant recommend this enough, both to Trekkers(trekkies?) and even those of you who wouldnt be caught dead giving the Vulcan salute..see this movie, you wont be disappointed.

Awesome review man; thanks for not including any spoilers.

I too am just a casual Trek fan, but I'm def going to go and see this flick.

Most of the reviews I've seen say that it was a great movie. So, I guess people are really enjoying it.

Dude, you are right on the spot. Bones ruled! Only had one minor detail that i didn't like. And that was that they skipped Kirks youth by 10 years. Would have liked to see a bit more of that. But that aside. A freaking great movie.
Did anyone else hear that strange ticking sound when spock was chocking kirk. I could have sworn i saw his finger go up :P

No probs guys, thanks for the feedback. I was gonna use spoilers and just warn people but naah, its too cool, gotta see for yourselves.

Lee this movie has done for Star Trek what the prequels SHOULD have done for Star Wars, as opposed to what they did do, which was actually turn off long time fans like myself! No Jar Jar bleedin Binks in this movie, and the cast can actually act, always a bonus!

Set2fall i actually didnt see anybody dressed up! One girl had Spock ears on and thats it, i was very disappointed:(

Nice review Ror. I just saw this today at 4:20pm and must say I loved it. By far the best Trek movie to date.

Shit, i hope i didnt hype it up too much, theres a lot of people taking a chance on this now! Please keep in mind that although im not a Trekky, im a huge sci fi fan, so if your not you may not enjoy it as much as i did...

spideysweb i thought it was the 2nd best! It actually didnt surpass Khan for me, but thats prob because of the memories i have of seeing it as a kid and just balling my eyes out at the end! Technically it is a better movie, but nothing tops that scene with Kirk and Spock at the end of Khan

THIS MOVIE GOT A 96% POSITIVE REVIEW RATIO WORLDWIDE. OF course this movie was good, and totally agree with the stuff you said in your review. I like Chris Pine, I felt that way too, when I first saw the trailers...but than I started thinkingm about SEQUELS for the new franchise of a DYING FRANCHISE. Dont they need YOUNG PEOPLE so they can AGE through-out the REBORN series?

Exactly. UNlike Wolverine Origins. THIS MOVIE IS WORTH TWO TRIPS if not more to the IMAX or your REGULAR THEATRES.

YOu didn't hype it up to much, but I left felling something was missing, I did like the film, but it was different even thou for a Prequel.

This want I've been saying all along lets get passed the old stuff & move forward. Same goes for Star Wars.
Thou Iam still a Trekkie... Over all I did like the movie.

Here we go, "Some reviews I have read imply that this was the only way to breath new life into a dead franchise. I couldn't disagree more. Trek fans who have read novels by Peter David or Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens can tell you that there are WAY better storylines out there and if Hollywood wanted to truly make good Trek movies they would hire better talent to write the scripts. Why not make a new ship with a new crew, set after Star Trek: Nemesis? Why go back to square one when so many more possibilities are available AFTER Nemesis? I'll tell you why. Because the names Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Enterprise fills theater seats thanks to work done years ago by GOOD writers, directors, and actors that Hollywood is unable reproduce because they are more interested in selling recycled garbage." haha, yeah lee that Frankenstein walk that vader did made me cringe so much my face almost imploded! Lucas is a nob.

spock i kinda know what you mean, it may actually have been too action orientated, the other Trek movies were a bit more thoughtful. And i think there were too many attempts at humor, i mean have one comic relief character..or even two, but does every single member of the crew have to try their hand at being a comedian! lol, i guess i should have put all that in the review but i was just so blown away by it i only thought about the negative aspects a few days later.

gambitfreak @ I wish i could say i know what you mean, but i havn't seen TREK yet, looking forward to it! ; )

I know this isn't a TREK question, but has anyone heard anything of the Episodes 7 8 & 9 of STAR WARS??? Is it ever going to be made?? I keep hearing its on, its off, its on, its off lol?!? Damn you LUCAS lol! I'd love to see Luke as the aging Jedi an some of the original cast back!!! The prequels did nothing for me really at all! Too much CGI!!!

An another question,,, who liked CGI'd Clone Troopers??? What was wrong with just men in armor like Stormtroopers in original STAR WARS??? Alot of it looked too fake, or was it just me? : D

It was a fun romp, but not as good as I had anticipated. The deviations from TOS didn't ruin it for me the way it would for a Trekkie (Trekker? The debate continues I guess...), but I found that they were harmful in some ways. I think the way Nimoy's Spock struggled with emotion versus Quinto's was much more subtle. This provided a little more mystique that was lacking (IMO) in this interpretation. Kirk got his butt whooped too much. In fact, I don't think there was a fistacuff fight that he won in this. And Bana was the biggest disappointment. Too cliched. I know he's better than what he gave. I like villians that steal the show! The deliveries were great by everyone else! I would even say flawless, save Bana. I could tolerate this new direction, but I think some of the elements that they altered were what gave the original it's charm.

Oh well, I know I'm in the minority here judging by the other posts. So I'm gonna get grief for my critique. But I think my points are valid and I will stand by them unless I can be proven that they are not.

Thanx man! I didn't wanna read any reviews until after I saw the movie, but i know you've seen a ton of films as well and i value your opinion.
