Although pre-production started at ILM in late 2011, JJ Abrams began shooting his sequel to 2009’s Star Trek yesterday. Shooting will take place at Sony Studios in Culver City as well as at the Paramount lot in Hollywood. This will be the first time that a Trek movie will make use of non-Paramount lots. New sets will also feature parts of the Enterprise not seen in the 2009 movie.

Robero Orci, sequel co-writer and producer, took to the comments section over at TrekMovie where he not only confirmed that filming had started but gave up some refreshing news regarding Engineering (which was actually a Budweiser plant in the 2009 film).

"I’ll tell you this. There are some cool improvements to engine room!"

TrekMovie also report that Hawaii will not be used as a filming location. It was previously stated that Hawaii would serve as a location for “alien jungle” scenes, but apparently a place in Southern California was chosen instead.

Shooting is expected to wrap in May this year. Starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Benedict Cumberbatch, Noel Clarke, Nazneen Contractor, Joseph Gatt, Alice Eve and Peter Weller, and directed by JJ Abrams. The sequel, which as of yet does not have a subtitle, will release on May 17, 2013.

About [frick]ing time!

Good news about the Engine Room. I hated the industrial look they went with.

@bhorwith22

So you also noticed the uncanny resemblance between Hiddleston and Spiner...

@JackBauer,

If you watch the extras on the Blu-ray you'll see and hear how the engineering section was just the slightly set-modified and pre-existing Budweiser factory.
It came across (in my opinion) as a bit of a cheapshot location shoot to be honest, after watching that I cannot NOT see the Budweiser factory plant now, and the set looks far too big to be set inside the ship. Needs to be far more warp core-sish in the traditional sense.

anyone know if they are going to be casting extras?

@SimyJo - I agree. They were either trying to save money by not building a set or trying to have it contrast with the sleek and shiny bridge. Either way it didn't work for me. I hope it's more along the lines of how Star Trek: Enterprise's engine room looked. It wasn't as neat as TNG or VOY.

I say that Cumberpatch is going to play the character of "Q" in the new movie...Its a different time line than the original series so this could work!

Will there be any Wookies in the sequel?

@EEK375 This actually wouldn't matter even if it was the prime timeline, as the Q are non-corporeal beings. This would also be a good opportunity to explain the alternate timeline.

@alexrosscollector Not immediately, but I saw a side by side picture, and Tom Hiddleston bears an uncanny resemblance to a younger Brent Spiner. Contrary to popular belief, Data does age physically, and it is mentioned in the show.
But I would like to see Brent Spiner as an older Noonian Soong.
Also, I think Tom Hardy as Picard is a no-brainer, as he played a younger Picard as a Starfleet cadet, and a clone of Picard in Nemesis (Please do not talk about it, I've seen enough spoilers for this film)

Don't they usually put out a press release the day they start shooting?
