Star Trek Sequel Will Be More Character Driven

While having a chat with COMING SOON at this years Wonder-Con, Screen writer for the successful 2009 reboot of cult TV show Star Trek, Bob Orci talked about its sequel.

During this chat, Orci revealed what may or may not be the main part of the plot involving Captain James T. Kirk played by Chris Pine:

"Everyone said [Kirk] is too young to become Captain," he explains,
"So maybe in the next movie, somebody goes, 'Man, you sure became Captain young and fast.' You start to incorporate people's opinions... If it's organic to the story and you find someone who doesn't think too highly of Kirk because he maybe skipped a few steps, that's maybe a fun thing to consider. That comes from a fan reaction and maybe gives you a story point."

Since this reboot was an origin story explaining how each character met, fans were left craving more screen time for each of the many members of the U.S.S. ENTERPRISE. Bob Orci explained why fans will get to see more of each character:

"[Fans] wanted more character time with everybody," he adds, "and, because that was an origin story for 'Star Trek,' everyone had to come in at a certain point. Now everyone is going to be there from the beginning, so they're going to get that. Everyone sure hated engineering. They thought it looked like a brewery, which it was. I'll pass that on to J.J. [Abrams] and see what he says."

News broke recently that the first draft of the script was completed by the ever working Orci and his writing/producing partner Alex Kurtzman. Now Orci is saying his work on the script is quite far from finished:

"We'll be working and tweaking that story through shooting," he says, "This time we don't have a strike, so we'll actually be able to change things on the set. On the last movie, we handed in the script and that was it. You couldn't change a word. This one feels like we've got all the time in the world."

ORCI THAT HACK!!! I SAW THE BOARD WHERE SOMEONE SUGGESTED THE LINE - "Everyone said [Kirk] is too young to become Captain," he explains,"So maybe in the next movie, somebody goes, 'Man, you sure became Captain young and fast.' - TO HIM! It's the Sucker Punch of science fiction movies and the sequel will suck even bigger.

I used to watch the show when I was kid. I was more into STAR WARS. I liked a couple of the newer TV shows too, but never made to the point of knowing every alien species and star cruiser. But I loved the new STAR TREK. I wasn'r really interested in it at first and then the previews got a little more interesting. Brilliant casting.

Dude, I'm seeing suggestions on that same board where a number of people are suggesting that Kirk and Spock come out of the closet!

i had mixed feelings about the first one...hated the scene where kirk as a kid jumps out of a moving car and hangs on a cliff, listening to beastie boys...hated the scene with the green she-hulk and i really hated the lack of explanation behind spock and uhuru's romance...that was a total wtf moment...imagine spending years with these characters and there never being a notion of romance between these two and then all of a sudden they are kissing...with no explanation as to where the romance came from...i hate orci..he ruined transformers...star trek's overall plot was good...just too much unecessary scenes trying to appeal to the stupid mtv crowd...after what? 10+ star trek films, this felt like star trek for dummies...JUST WRITE THE MAIN PLOT, KEEP IT CEREBRAL AND SCI FI AND STAY AWAY FROM YOUR STUPID JOKES AND "COOL SCENES" THAT PLAGUE YOUR MOVIES (TRANSFORMERS, ESPECIALLY)!!! i bet you coboys and aliens will have some stupid comedy crap in it too...

In the original series, it was Nurse Chapel that always had a thing for Spock. The Uhuru/Spock thing was a real low point in the movie for me. Chekov was only 17? AND navigator on the fleet's newest and finest ship? Facepalm #2. Karl Urban's portrayal of McCoy hit the nail on the head. I hope they can explore a little more of his character.

I was a TOTAL STAR WARS FAN. NEVER EVER watched a SINGLE Star Trek episode OR movie. One trip to the movies to see the new Star Trek film with little to no expectations and BOOOM!!!! I'm already considering switching over to Star Trek.

Meaning: It was INCREDIBLE!!!! 3rd FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!!

Still waiting, anxioiusly, for the sequel.

Been a massive Star Trek fan my entire life.
Thought the movie was damn good and a sequel is a must, but it didn't feel like Star Trek.
It was missing something big but I can't describe what.
At times it felt more like Star Wars too.

Good to see the franchise go on but it's sad knowing that they feel almost like entirely different stories.

The first one had a fair amount of character development considering that they had to introduce each character AND follow a plot, so this has to be a good thing.

fullmetal This STAR TREK film is in it's own universe apart from other story lines. Spocks romance is exactly what you see it to be in the film. Has nothing to do with what you've seen on the 60s TV show. That's Spocks girfriend and it remained a secret up until the point where she started kissing him. Licking the sweet milk of his tears on a starship elevator.

@Zeroethic

- Contrived story (This is the only Trek time travel story, right?)

- Bad dialogue "Hi Chris, I'm Nero!"

- Bad acting (Pine,Greenwood,Quinto, Saldana)

- Unbelievable coincidences (The ice cave scene, one minute everyone's a cadet the next they're all qualified starship crews, Nero arrives minutes before Spock does)

- Unbelievable plot advancement (10 year old kid leaping from a corvette, Cadet to Captain in 90 mins)

- Lens flares

- silly design (the Enterprise, the costumes, no rank for miniskirts?)

...just to name a couple

@fullmetal & JonnyNemo are you [frick]ing kidding me. Star Trek was dead before Abrams took over, Nemesis made almost nothing and Enterprise went down in failure. The studio was not going to make any more shows or movies till Abrams came in do you understand that. I would not call myself a Trekkie but I was a Star Trek TOS fan saw all the episodes and movies as a kid and watched every episode of TNG and most of DS9 the first couple of episodes of Voyager and only about 5 of Enterprise and I have been to one convention only. I loved the new movie and was glad to see the original crew again. I always liked Kirk the Cowboy the best with post-Locutus Picard coming in second. I know you may want a more intellectual and Trekker style Star Trek movie but the franchise was in the crapper with no hope what so ever till the day Abrams came in. And it brought in a lot of new Star Trek fans but I really get the sense a lot of you Trekkers don't like that because it makes you feel that the masses are intruding into your little club and only prefer "true" Trekkers. Well guess what Abrams Star Trek out grossed them all and the last one before that, Nemesis did the worst ever. You should be happy that Star Trek is alive and just enjoy the movie.

@Dmon

The higher the gross for a bad movie says alot about the intended audience. They had a chance to make a good movie, but they instead pandered to the MTV generation. Everyone has the right to make money as do those of us who appreciate a well thought out story have the right to pick apart a bad movie.

If I was a film critic - oh wait - I am! I give this movie way low points for insulting the intelligence of their audience.

The first one had a great cast and fun direction but was a truly horribly written film... There's no question that the guys behind the script are the guys that write the Transformers films. Kirk maybe "skipped a few steps"? What, do most people have to graduate from the Academy first before going straight to the rank of Captain?
reverendjonnynemo
reverendjonnynemo - 4/4/2011, 6:21 PM
@ Chewtoy - I actually had a chance to speak with Orci recently - yes, really - and he justifies the rank jumping as a "...reflection of the times we live in. It's no different than JFK, Bush or Obama."

Say WHAT???

I thought it was really weak plot advancement and a clear demonstration that Bob Orci has no idea of how the real world works. I told him that it was a bit weak, and his reply was "...yet somehow I got away with it."

I call Orci and his partner a pair of lazy writers who have no concept of plot advancement. Even I hate to admit it, but at least James Cawley's heart is in the right place.

Fullmetal is a moron. Best Star Trek movie ever made. I would not change a thing. Also how is this a reboot? ITS NOT!
Dmon
Dmon - 4/4/2011, 6:26 PM
@JonnyNemo well the kind of Star Trek movie you want they would have lost money and very few would want to see it putting Paramount in worse trouble then they are now. And you got that with Nemesis which was terrible by the way. They could not pander to the hardcore Trekkers audience because there are not enough to finance the film sorry only way to do that would be to give it the budget of Phase II the web series hell you Trekkers can always go watch that.
fullmetal
fullmetal - 4/4/2011, 6:27 PM
dmon said "I really get the sense a lot of you Trekkers don't like that because it makes you feel that the masses are intruding into your little club and only prefer "true" Trekkers." dude, calm down..i'm no trekkie...i'm far from a trekkie!! my dad is a trekkie and i watched all the films withhim...thats why i know...i had mixed feelings about the film..that's all because i know how the old school fans feel...neverthless the movie is FAR from perfect in my opinion...is it better than nemesis? hell yeah!!! is it better than insurrection? hell yeah!!! is is better than generations? ah....it's about the same for me....definitley no better than wrath of khan or first contact...JUST WATCH THE VIDEO AND HAVE A LAUGH!

reverendjonnynemo - 4/4/2011, 6:29 PM
He's a moron for stating his opinion? That's rather one track, and simply put - it *was* a terrible movie. If what I was reading earlier has any merit, it's entirely possible the next movie will have Kirk/ Spock homosexual overtones.

EDDIEBROCK..YOU'RE THE MORON FOR INSULTING PEOPLE FOR HAVING DIFFERENT OPINIONS OTHER THAN YOURS! as a matter of fact i bet more than half the people who liked the film would disagree with you that it was the best one ever...wrath of khan!!!!! and everyone knows that!!

reverendjonnynemo - 4/4/2011, 6:33 PM
@ Dmon, read closer: I never said pandering to the Trekkers, I said it was poorly written because it insults the intelligence of the viewing audience. The Trek movie I would have to have seen made was pitched and nearly accepted by Harve Bennett back in the early 90's.

Plenty of wonderful films have opened poorly to do better in later release. I've seen better dialogue exchange on Sesame Street! For a technologically advanced society, they (technobabble aside) talk to each other like they're simpletons. I guess for the MTV Generation, that dumbing down is good storytelling?
