Notes the site, "Each of the 178 episodes spanning The Next Generation's seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release in the Blu-ray format and, eventually, for runs on television and digital platforms in the U.S. and across the world.... 'Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of Star Trek: The Next Generation,' Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Entertainment, said in a statement. 'Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can’t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases.'

"CBS is, in fact, returning to the original film negatives, a mother lode of material encompassing 25,000-plus reels of footage, and editing the episodes together precisely as they were when they originally aired between 1987 and 1994. Visual effects will not be upconverted from videotape, but instead will be recompositioned. The freshly cut film will ultimately be transferred to high definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. And all of the work is being done in conjunction with respected, longtime Star Trek figures Denise and Michael Okuda, who are on board as consultants."

The teaser trailer below provides some info on which episodes will be featured on the January sampler.

I'm waiting for x-files on blu ray but I doubt it will happen as it wasn't shot with film or HD cameras.

The classier Star Trek by far.

The heartbreaking episode "The Inner Light" was one of the finest hours of television ever.

@grif Is that even possible? I would imagine they would keep the original aspect ratio

Xfiles was shot on film. Its extremely easy to determine video and film back in the 80s. Yes kiddies once upon a time moving pictures was shot on celluoid film.

A taste of the next generation of the next generation? Who is writing these lines? Steven Cobert???

Working for a better tomorrow, tomorrow.

For wide screen the only way to get that is to make everyone short and fat. Wide isnt happening for the next generation.

Thr original cast had better chemistry. Dianna was ok sometimes but she was a bit annoying at times. Kirk is the best captain in a critical and combst situation. Pickard refered to comittee decisions too much.

Clairification: Woosley Crusher and Dianna were a both annoying. The first next generation season retread too much on the original trek episodes. The space sickness episode, the aging episode (which was season 2), even Q was lifted from the original series I forget his name, Terlain or something along those lines. They even had a trial, old clothes, costumes etc. I actually liked Deep Space 9. As it broke away from the normal Trek formula

Best episode of any of the Star Trek series is City on the Edge of forever.

i've always been weary about TNG on BluRay because of the VFX being done on VideoTape, and heard that up converting that would look disastrous.

but since their being "recompositioned", i guess i'm stoked.

Still hope they VFX turn out for the better.

I just finished rewatching the first season, and it was edgier than I recall.

People talk about the wooden acting, but the edge was there, i mean "ROBOCOP" levels of criticism and irony. Even more than later seasons. It was not sunday church.

Particularly liked "The Arsenal of Freedom" and "We´ll always have Paris" and "The Neutral Zone".

Damn! I can't believe the 25th anniversary is coming up. I remember when it premiered.

Once TNG made it past the 1st and 2nd seasons it easily surpassed TOS as my favorite Trek series. It held that spot until the Dominion War storyline began on DS9. Nothing was better than that.

1. DS9
2. TNG
3. ENT
4. TOS
5. VOY
6. TAS

This may finally be my excuse to get a Blu-ray player, depending on the price of the set.

I watched this show from the beginning and for two years I would always compare it to TOS and the films which featured the original cast.It was the episode "The Best Of Both Worlds" that finally brought me over. That two parter is one the short list of most epic moments in Star Trek along with Wrath of Khan and the end of the Dominion war.
