STAR TREK: The Script For Quentin Tarantino's Adaptation Is Finished; Confirmed To Be Rated R

As Once Upon A Time In Hollywood begins its press tour, director Quentin Tarantino is already gearing up for his next project, with the intent to revise the latest Star Trek script very, very soon...

There has always been a lot of mystery surrounding Quentin Tarantino's planned Star Trek movie. When it was first  announced, we heard it was being worked on concurrently with the now stagnant Star Trek 4, but since then there has been a lack of news regarding the adaptation.

Currently, there are only a few things fans know for sure. If the project goes forward, it will be produced by J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) and directed by Tarantino from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith (Overlord).

Speaking with Empire, Tarantino was asked for an update on the film, and its current stage in the development process. This is what he had to say:

There’s a script that exists for it now, I need to weigh in on it, but haven’t been able to do that yet.

It seems as though Tarantino has been too caught up to follow up on last year's story pitch, but it sounds like he will be shifting his focus to the film once his latest hits theaters. As for the MPAA rating, Tarantino himself has confirmed that the film, if made, will be Rated R.

Oh yeah! It’s an R-rated move. If I do it, it’ll be R-rated.

Do you think Tarantino's Star Trek will actually get off the ground?

This sounds really offbeat, not really in a good way. I truly don't like QT and not sure this is a good move for the franchise.

@Feralwookiee - QT has a unique style to his films. He glorifies gore with his storytelling and it works but at the same time his style does not mesh well with established properties like Star Trek or Marvel.

Had WB had their DCEU planned out he would have been phenomenal as the director of Lobo with Jason Momoa as the title lead with crazy kills and a dark comedic tone like Inglorious Bastards.

If Tarantinos last movie is a Star Trek movie that will be...well...kind of amazing.

@Mrcool210 - I don't know... Tarantino's last movie being a Star Trek movie doesn't feel right. Hopefully, since he's co-writing this, it won't count as his last film.
That said, hyped as FUUUCK for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

@Mrcool210 @Tmp3- has he said he'll stop directing films or something ?

@Mrcool210 - I doubt even he knows what his last film will be at this point.

He's been tossing that last film stuff around for a while. Word is, he's gonna direct that Django/Zorro crossover too.

I dont think he'll direct this Trek film, but who knows.

@BlackBeltJones - I kinda want to see the Julez spinoff he wanted to do or the De-aged Vega Bros movie or Kill Bill Vol. 3.

@knocturnalzen10 - He said his 10th film will be his last :/

@MexCowboyNation - Kill Bill 3 CAN and SHOULD HAPPEN.

Its been enough time for Green's daughter to be of age and to go kill Beatrix.

I'd watch a Julez spinoff no doubt. Even a mini series might be a bit better.

@knocturnalzen10 - he didn't direct Planet Terror, Robert Rodriguez did. The films Tarantino has directed are Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill (originally just one film but he split it into two for theatrical release), Death Proof (Grindhouse), Inglorious Basterds, Django Unchained, the Hateful Eight and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

IF this happened... this'd be the best Star Trek movie ever. I doubt it though, considering David Fincher's World War Z 2 was canned by Paramount execs

The fact that it's R-rated makes me think that Tarantino doesn't actually get the franchise. Like this will just be his version of this scene.

You can like a franchise (even be enthusiastic about it) without being anywhere near the wavelength of its actual tone and spirit.

@KingCipher - I like Tarantino a lot, and I have no doubt that he appreciates some of the themes of Star Trek. But aside from some consistent themes race-relations and Tarantino's effusive love for all things retro, quirky, and campy, I just don't feel like it's a good fit.

@DnA - I feel like it'll be his own crew for a one-off. All new characters and such

@tmp3 -

I remember hearing somewhere that the Guardian of Forever is involved in Tarantino's script.

It's going to be the crew going back in time to the 2020s and reacting to the people there.

Keep in mind that some of the most successful Trek films have been time travel ones.

Voyage Home, First Contact, and Star Trek (2009) were all hits.

The crew themselves would remain their utopian, racially tolerant, socially enlightened, PC selves
and it would be the 2020 human's throwing around n-bombs.

Years ago Paramount almost did something like this. When developing The Voyage Home, the early
drafts of the script had Paramount teaming up its biggest star Eddie Murphy with the trek franchise.

They would have gone back in time to 1986 and pretty much met Axel Foley with all the resulting
hijinx.
