From hitfix.com And when asked to comment on the report, JJ Abrams responded with two very direct words: "Not true."
RUMOR DEBUNKED!
El Mayimbe here! So, I’m tracking a Latin bad guy role in an upcoming studio movie and although there is no progress today on that specific part, instead I got dibs on a big time bad guy role played by a Latin dude.
For starters, I’m not a trekkie whatsoever so I wasn’t even looking for a Star Trek scoop. Although heavily debated online as to who Benicio del Toro might be playing in Star Trek 2.
I’m here to tell you guys that according to my sources...
Benicio Del Toro is playing none other than...KHAN NOONIEN SINGH
or better known as...KHAN!!!
Early last month Variety reported that JJ Abram's had offered the main villain role to Benicio Del Toro. Based on what the sources for Latino Review have said it looks like he has accepted and will be playing the most popular Star Trek Villain ever, Khan.
Benicio, who starred in such films as
Sin City, Traffic, and
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas will be taking over a role made famous by Ricardo Montalbán. A role that Ricardo played in the original television series, and then portrayed in the classic,
Star Trek 2: Wrath of Khan. Which to most
Star Trek fans is the best film in the franchise, and a large part of its success is based on Ricardo's amazing performance and how well the character Khan was written. Finally Kirk had a worthy adversary. One that enjoys quoting Shakespeare and Herman Melville.
Who is Khan? Khan Noonien Singh, commonly shortened to Khan, is a villain in the fictional Star Trek universe. According to backstory given in the character's first appearance, the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Space Seed" (1967), Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman tyrant who once controlled more than a quarter of the Earth during the Eugenics Wars of the 1990s. After being revived in 2267 by the crew of the Enterprise, Khan attempts to capture the starship, but is thwarted by James T. Kirk and exiled on Ceti Alpha V to create a new civilization with his people. The character returns in the 1982 film Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, set fifteen years after "Space Seed", in which Khan escapes his imprisonment and sets out to seek revenge upon Kirk. The character was portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán in both the television episode and in the film. - wikipedia
