EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Sam Witwer Talks Star Wars - The Force Unleashed II

With the release of Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, actor Sam Witwer (who also played Doomsday on Smallville and will be seen as the vampire Aidan on the Syfy version of Britain’s Being Human) reprises his role of Starkiller, continuing the dream opportunity to portray a protagonist in the Star Wars universe.

“Dude, you have no idea,” laughs Witwer about the overall experience. “I’m a Star Wars fan from birth, so basically to forge a Star Wars protagonist and portray him was never-wracking because we both know how specific Star Wars fans are about what they want to see, and how vocal they are when they’re displeased. So I’m going in there and I’m thinking, ‘I might as well put a gun to my head now,’ because I would take their criticisms very personally. It would feel as if I had let them down if they didn’t like it, and that would be very bad. But the first one was a tremendous experience, and the second one was every bit as fun. The dramatic content in those games is exceptional. In fact, the Writer’s Guild agreed with us – Hayden Blackman got a Writer’s Guild Award for the first Force Unleashed script. Which is great, because since I was a Star Wars fan, I was very specific about what I thought we should do, because I’d been thinking about it my entire life: How would I play a Star Wars protagonist?

“It was fun to take in all the lessons we learned about Star Wars over the years,” he continues. “You know, Harrison Ford used to say that the only thing Geoge Lucas used to say on the set was, ‘Faster, more intense!’ They would finish a take and George would say, ‘That’s great, but do it faster. Do it more intense.’ But if you watch the original movie, it’s the exact, correct direction for that movie. Everything, when it’s spoken, is fast and loud. First of all, everything takes on an importance and immediacy that you wouldn’t have if you were being more internal, so it makes it seem more important. More importantly, it fills the screen in a way that a 1940s movie would fill the screen – it has that kind of clipped dialogue, people talking extremely fast.”
As he explains it, when they would film a sequence for either Force Unleashed game, it wouldn’t feel particularly Star Wars, so he would suggest that they do it faster and more intense.

“We would do it,” Witwer smiles, “and suddenly Star Wars happened. It was really fun. Dude, the entire process was all about going through and having these discussions – Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia… why is it that we even care? We shouldn’t by all rights, this is a movie that happened a long time ago and we shouldn’t care, but we absolutely do. These characters still work, they’re still relevant and people still want to see more adventures from that universe. So you look at that and you realize, ‘Shit, we have to come up with another one of those guys. We’re in trouble.’”

The solution was to develop a formula to his character, Starkiller. “He’s raised by Darth Vader,” he reflects, “so he’s one part Darth Maul. Then we wanted to make him two parts Han Solo, simply because we should; one part Indiana Jones, because there is a difference, and then after that, we have to have one crucial element of Luke Skywalker there: the interior of the character. There should be a wide-eyed kid who’s just trying to figure out what the right thing to do is. We did that, and people thankfully seemed to have responded to the character. So much so that against all odds he’s returned for this second stint in Force Unleashed II."

So, does Witwer dream of bringing the character of Starkiller alive in a feature film some day? “I don’t have any illusions about that,” he responds. “I’m just proud that I’ve been able to contribute in my own small way to the Star Wars universe. And, in fact, Lucasfilm has been tremendous to me. I’m actually one of the few people who can I’ve been to Skywalker ranch, chilling and hanging out. That’s pretty cool.”

Tomorrow Witwer looks back at Smallville and forward to Being Human.

Tremendous interview, Ed!!! GREAT read, GREAT job :))

Personally, i've enjoyed every film so far but never was a Star Wars "trekkie" LOL And yes, i do highly prefer Star Wars to Star Trek LOL But i never played Force Unleashed even though it looked phenomenal and i only heard great things of it too. But i'd really like to hear what every Star Wars mega fan would think if the next rumored trilogy would actually be one of Starkiller :)

The first one got mediocre reviews, but I enjoyed it as if it was the best game ever. So far the second one is better, and the graphics are more polished, so to it looks like a movie lol

Dear Lucasarts,

Please make a sequal to, or remake Dark Forces 2/Jedi Knight as well as Jedi Outcast.

Also, please stop making jedi have DBZ style force powers...

ThreeBidTacos@ I gotta agree completely with you on that one, I got the PS3 version and the cuts scenes are beautiful. SWTFU 2 is what 1 should have been. The ingame is beautiful and the controls flow a lot better. Great game! Can't wait to play through a couple times. Nothing more satisfying than picking up a storm trooper with my mind and chucking him hundreds of feet straight up into the air!!!

Brashlight
Brashlight - 10/27/2010, 7:28 AM
SirPrize@ I would say so far it has been more like 15% of the game is cut scenes, The game play is great, very smooth and a lot more responsive than the first game, the fighting mechanics are much better, I do wish they would very up the button sequencing on the kill mechanics a bit. It can be a bit repetitive but overall the game is much better than the first. And it’s not just the cut scenes that look great the in game graphics are much more polished too. There, that good enough of a review for you :)

Thanks Sirprize! Gives me a better idea :)

Brashlight- What would you say to all the problems that kotaku has listed, for example? Would you say they're wrong or on the money?
Brashlight
Brashlight - 10/27/2010, 7:42 AM
SirPrize@ There is no pleasing you is there :P

Shaman@ I'm at work and that review is blocked but I will keep you posted. I will just say if you liked the first one, this one is better. But if you are still hesitant just give it a rent and see if you like it. I haven't had enough time to play all the way through yet but from what I have played so far it is much improved over the first one in my opinion. And I can have a tendency to be critical when it comes to video games.
Brashlight
Brashlight - 10/27/2010, 7:46 AM
I bought it because I really liked the first one and also had plenty of games to trade in towards it but if you are still unsure I would say just rent it and give it a go, that way you don't pay full price but still get to see what it has to offer.

Amazing work ED! I've liked this guy in everything that I've seen him in (Dexter especially) and it's a pity that some dodgy script choices let him down in Smallville. His work in the first game was superb though and I'd completely forgotten that the sequel is out on Friday! He seems like a cool guy and I for one would love to see him bring Starkiller to life on the big screen. :)

Brashlight
Brashlight - 10/27/2010, 8:16 AM
Shaman@ well the first one will be pretty low in price so you could give that one a go and see if its your flavor if not then no big deal. That one will give you a good idea of how the second one plays.

SirPrize- Pop in a losenge, it's a satchel!!! ;P

Brashlight- I was definitely thinking about picking it up. But then if all the shit they say about it is true, i don't like glitches and over the top hard games to finish. Castlevania is juuuuuuuuuust within my patience range LOL. But that's only cause i'm a fan of the lore ;)
ThreeBigTacos
ThreeBigTacos - 10/27/2010, 9:52 AM
@Brash: have you run into any glitches or bugs yes in the second one? I've run into a few that I either had to kill myself to go back to the last checkpoint or quit and restart the checkpoint.

CorndogBurglar - 10/27/2010, 9:58 AM
@ sirprize

Force Unleashed 2 sucks. unless you like games with one attack button and the rest are power buttons. how fun is a 3rd person action game if that you can't do combos in it? they gave Starkiller 2 lightsabers in this one, but it makes no difference, its only cosmetic. you still just pound X repeatedly to attack.

the graphics are beautiful though.

@ Shaman

the new Castelvania is far superior to Force Unleashed 2. its no contest.

I have a proposition. George Lucas loves money, and we love SW:TFU...so why not make a movie? The character is modeled after his voice actor, and we know they can pull it off. Why not?
