Lucasfilm Denies Star Wars Trilogy Rumor

The big rumor over the past couple of days is ISEB.net's report that George Lucas was planning a sequel trilogy for release after the 3D versions of the originals wrap up in 2017. Today, Lucasfilm spokesman Josh Kushins debunked the rumor.

Source: Wired.com

Kushins tells Wired.com, "This is, of course, completely false. George Lucas has plenty of projects to keep him busy right now — including plenty of Star Wars projects — but there are no new Star Wars feature films planned.”

Wired.com adds, "Both the IESB website and the official Star Wars forums were experiencing technical problems Saturday afternoon, possibly due to overwhelming interest in the rumor."

A BIT OF EDITORIALIZING: If -- and that's a big if -- the IESB rumor is true, it means that the first of this proposed trilogy wouldn't reach theatres for another nine years. There are some people who believe that IESB.net posted the rumor as a means of generating traffic. It should be pointed out that several years ago the site bent over backwards with rumors generated no where else that Tom Welling would be playing Superman on the big screen. Even when the producers of Smallville refuted the claim -- and yours truly interviewed executive producer Alfred Gough on the subject -- the rumors continued to the point where it genuinely got ridiculous and given the sheer quantity of user feedback, it SEEMED that those rumors, too, were geared towards increasing traffic. No proof of this, but this Star Wars rumor doesn't seem credible. Again, just a purely personal observation.

@ xenix

they could of done the dark horse presents comic "star wars dark empire".

i think that would of been pretty cool,as well as maybe a few of the novels that are set after return of the jedi.

I think it is too late to do it but they should have done a 7-9 before they went back to do 1-3. It should have been a Trilogy on Princess Lea. They did a set on her father and brother she should have had a set as well.

@deadpool72: in nineteenth century an obscure newspaper called Daily Mail had published a series of forged "scientific" articles about life on the Moon, when they were eventually debunked the Mail was already one of the bestselling popular newspapers in England.
Time haven't changed that much, I guess. :(

see now that would've been awesome. I don't need to see the Star Wars Trilogy on the big screen in 3D. Its pointless. I would LOVE to see a sequel trilogy tho.

i totally agree,do another trilogy set after jedi then a tv show.

i'm sure it can last ten or more seasons,if a certain other show that i love can.(you know which one.)

as i said earlier i would love to see it focus around boba fett bounty hunting.

it'll be better than that f*cking dog the bounty hunter.

Um, Lucasfilm WOULD deny it, especially if they plan on making an announcement a few years from now. They deny everything that’s rumoured until they’re ready to spill the truth themselves. We’ve seen them do it countless times before, debunking something that, a year or two years down the line, turns out to be 100% true.

I’m not saying it’s genuine, but Harry Knowles seems to confirm IESB’s scoop, too: http://www.aintitcool.com/node/47173

No offence, but I trust Harry Knowles and IESB (who HAVE been proven right in the past) over a website that willingly reports on rumours taken from IMDB.

I'm glad to hear this actually. With the saga finally finally making its way to blu ray, the re-release yet again of the films in 3D now, and with the Clone Wars animated series, we've got enough. At this point I've given up all hope in ever seeing the live action show(which I believe was finally halted if I'm not mistaken). I'm a SW fan from way back but I've decided to move on to other things. The continuity has been messed with too much now for it to even seem like the same movies anymore much less the cartoon's take and so I stopped watching the cartoon as a result. If we ever do see something good come from SW again, please don't let Lucas direct it, period. I'm done lining his pockets with my money.

Star Wars used to be a film franchise. Now it's a multi-media milking from A to Z. I'm just gonna wait for the enevitable trilogy and hope it's better than the first two prequels. Episode III was powerful, and it's the tone I think Star Wars should take from now on.

Thank God!

I am a huge Wars fan, but it needs to be left alone already.
I don't know if I'll facepalm or not when they update it to 3D (which I'm certain will happen).

I have faith that J.J. Abrams is going to make the best modern space Sci-Fi series in his Star Trek films.
His reboot was better than Avatar and the Prequel Trilogy IMO. I have watched the Blu-ray like 50 times.

man I was all geeking out over the news!!! Dammit! I really want a sequel trilogy bad.

Mark Hamill could still play an older Luke, and it be kick ass! He could Jedi train peeps, and be like Obi Wan but without the lame beard.

I still can't get over how much money has been made off of these movies. The first three were well written, and had great special effects for the time. Though they were poorly directed. Then came the disaster of the prequels...(shudders)

Totally agree with you "Dont let Lucas direct" :-<>

Not knocking him in the slighteset, he's got a great imagination and directed the first film, but that was a completely differant calibre of actors back then..

A lot of the BABYFACED talent of today cant act convincingly unless threatened with the motivational wacking stick of a good director :->. Its just not George Lucas strongpoint.

I felt sorry for Padme coz she made me feel that on screen for her.
I was TOTALLY not convinced by Anakin's fall to the darkside, it shoulda been handled totally differant and the film woulda been timeless :-<

NOT, "What have i done?, ive just cut off Mace Windu's hand?!?! , im totally gona drop ALL my heroic aspects from before now, an go kill some Jedi younglings!!... grrr.
= The emperor shoulda played more on his fears an told him that the jedi will hunt you an padme down coz of what you've done, less you wipe them out now!. grrr

Sorry :-) - turning rant mode OFF. hehe.

Give us a FORCE UNLEASHED trilogy :-D that was one of the few games that actually had me watching it from start to finish while played by my little brother.

@ elle1980

the cut scenes for star wars force unleashed are pretty cool as are knights of the old republic.

they would make fantastic films or tv shows.

the tiger video very cool,i think i heard on the news or a nature programe last week.

that there is more tigers in captivity then in the wild, which is sad.

should watch the cove documentry its about dolphins, some shocking stuff.

I still think that the best shot at a new trilogy would best be served by the series of books commonly known as the Thrawn Trilogy. I could totally see Jason Isaacs (Lucius Malfoy) playing Grand Admiral Thrawn. The arrogance this actor is able to channel would be perfect. Plus, the story is set only five years after Endor. All of your favorite characters would return, and you would also have the introduction of Mara Jade. The Emperor's Hand. Too Cool.

i wish lucas would give the green light for more star wars movies. im real tired of all star wars stories taking place between the 3 originals or during the newer three. i want to see something that shows luke skywalker rebuilding the jedi temples or showing him as a jedi master training new jedis something that takes place after return of the jedi. i mean there has to be more that happens after that. you think lucas would have at least thought about it by now

Star Wars live action series, please!

Season 1: Truce at Bakura (with Bounty Hunter Wars)
Season 2: Rogue Suadron novels (with Shadows of Mindor)
Season 3: Wraith Squadron (Courtship of Princess Leia)
3 1/2 hour movie blockbuster: Thrawn Crisis
Season 4: Dark Empire I
Season 5: Dark Empire II
Season 6: Isard's Revenge
Another Summer Movie: I, Jedi/Jedi Academy trilogy
Season 7: Children of the Jedi/Darksaber
Season 8: Starfighters of Adumar/Planet of Twilight
Season 9: The Crystal Star (with flashbacks to Han Solo Trilogy)
Third Summer Movie: The Black Fleet Crisis
Season 10: The Corellian Trilogy
Spinoff season 1: Young Jedi Knights
Season 11: The Hand of Thrawn Duology
Spinoff season 2: Young Jedi Knights
Epic Finish Movie Trilogy: New Jedi Order (perhaps have Vector Prime, Turning Point, and Unifying Force as the actual three films with continuing seasons of shows in between)

I realize this would take a tremendous amount of logistical effort on the part of producers, writers, and actors, but I believe if you find the right commited people, this set-up could be the most prolific and epic note in TV/Movie history.

Granted this is just my opinion, but I hope the idea is well recieved.
