More Changes Expected On Star Wars Blu-Ray's; May Include A CGI Yoda!

It's believed that the upcoming blu-ray release of all six Star Wars movies will see a few new "surprises" added in by George Lucas, including the addition of a CGI Yoda in The Phantom Menace! Hit the jump for more...

Geek Tyrant have spotted a report by The Digital Bits which reveals George Lucas' surprise changes to even more aspects of the Star Wars movies. In the past, this has included major changes like a completely redesigned CGI Jabba the Hutt in A New Hope and the inclusion of Hayden Christensen as Anakin Skywalker at the end of Return of the Jedi. Well, it looks like the prequels are set for a make-over as well...

Once again, George has apparently added a few new "surprises" into these films. I don’t know what they are and didn’t get to see any of them on Friday, but I was assured that there will be “new things to notice” when we watch the films. I think we can safely assume that one of them will be the new all-digital Yoda in Episode I. Way back when Episode III was released on DVD, ILM digital effects supervisor Pablo Helman confirmed to me that the puppet Yoda in Episode I was replaced with a digital version to better match his appearance in Episodes II and III. In fact, the Episode III DVD extras includes a clip of the Episode I digital Yoda. However, this Blu-ray set is really the first opportunity we’ll have to see it in full. What the other changes to these films may be, I have no idea, but I suspect there will be no lack of blog posts on this very subject within hours of the first discs becoming available to fans.

What do you guys make of this? It's not all bad, as the original report also points out that they'll be improving elements like the CGI and sound. However, what possible changes could they make to the movies themselves?! Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

I think it might be good since yoda is never moving much so they can Aleut super detailed.
But I love the puppets.

If ol' Georgie has the guts to ruthlessly cut TPM "Phantom Edit" style, then I may be impressed. Isn't the whole point of his Special Editions to make them better? Episode 1 is the most in need of improvement.

For the life of me I can not figure out why he continues to rape star wars. I am a fan, not crazy, but I love the original movies. He made a mistake with changing the production process when making the last three and now he is going back and trying to change it for the originals. Just not a good idea. There needs to be a T-Shirt that says... Every time George Lucas updates Star Wars, God kills a kitten. IN fact, I am making one of those inspirational poster that says just that...

Saw the scenes at star wars live and not gonna lie they looked soooooooo much better than the muppet in episode 1. Empire and Return were left alone.

Because we all know that a special effects film is made worse when you upgrade the special effects to look more realistic.

If you don't want to look at the new editions, watch the original cut that they released on DVD and nothing else. That simple. It isn't as though he's changing the story and making it so Yoda is a 12 foot tall jive-talking Sith or something. He's trying to make it look less like a stupid immobile fake looking puppet lol.

There were plenty of puppets in episode I, there was still a good balance and it looked pretty neat unlikely the two last ones.

Yeah Yoda was replaced digitally ages ago for those live performances. It was pretty obvious that Phantom would eventually be released with it. I'm not against the changes but would on the whole prefer a whole new Star Wars trilogy, Lucas should adapt Shadows of the Empire :D

Typically, I prefer practical effects, but I like CGI Yoda more than puppet Yoda. Puppets look "real" because they're actually there, but CGI character can capture more emotion in facial expression and lifelike movement.

The ONLY way I would EVER consider buying these is if they were restored ORIGINAL versions on the New Hope AND Empire. The rest (including Jedi) was poop.

They're just talking about replacing the Episode I Yoda, not making him CGI in all films.

Hayden Christenson's ghost in Return of the Jedi is by far the dumbest and most insulting change of all the butchered scenes.

I'm surprised that there's anyone here that didn't know this already. I mean that clip was on the 2004 release.
