Star Wars: New Jedi Order (that's the current working title) is expected to arrive in theaters in 2026 or 2027, with Daisy Ridley reprising her Star Wars sequel trilogy role as Rey Skywalker. Or Rey Palpatine. Honestly, it's best not to overthink it.

There's a great deal of excitement to see where Rey's story goes next and, in an interview with Screen Rant (via SFFGazette.com), Ridley hinted at some unexpected changes for her character in a movie expected to serve as "Episode X."

"I didn't feel there was a stone left uncovered," she started. "So, I felt very satisfied. I started that at 21, and I'm now 31. I feel different. It will be interesting coming in, personally, in a different zone."

"And, also, in those intervening years from the last film, what has happened and where has that led Rey to?"

That's a question many fans would like to see answered, though we're also curious about how many returning from the sequels could appear. Comments from Oscar Isaac and John Boyega suggest they have zero interest in returning to Star Wars, but would Ridley like to reunite with the latter to explore Finn's role as a Jedi?

"That is above my pay grade," she said with a laugh. "I would love to see that, but that is not a decision for me."

During a panel at this Sunday's SXSW event in Austin, Ridley also talked openly about the impact her role as Rey had on her career and what that meant when she said goodbye to Rey when The Rise of Skywalker was released in 2019.

"There weren’t that many offers coming in," she admitted. "It’s not that there wasn’t any. I remember finishing and thinking, 'Oh, it’s quiet and strange.' [COVID] was a very strange time to sit with the quiet and, honestly, grieving a time of my life."

However, since then, Ridley says things have improved. "It’s been really busy and amazing and I’ve got to do so many different things for so many different people. It has been a different exploration of myself and my career."

Ms. Marvel director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy will be at the helm and, as noted, Ridley will reprise her role as Rey, now a Jedi Master looking to create a new Jedi Order while attempting to combat the dark forces that rise up to stop her. What those are remains to be seen.

Let us know what you're hoping to see from Star Wars: New Jedi Order in the comments section.

Has there ever been another example of a entire fanbase hating a character and the studio forcing them this much?

I wouldve preferred they greenlit the Rian Johnson trilogy.

Filoni is not the SW savior I was hoping him to be after Ahsoka.

@vectorsigma - oh dear god no... Rian needs to be kept entirely away from Star Wars...

@DevilsDreams - Your judgment of Rian’s take on Star Wars is misplaced. In actuality the last Jedi; a Star Wars film that he directed had a better story, well written character arcs for the likes of Rey, Finn, Poe & Kylo, then the other two sequels combined. It’s also my second favourite SW film after Empire.
You don’t speak for everyone and neither do I but just remember not everyone hates TLJ or Rian’s contribution to the franchise for that matter. Some of us are fans of his work.

@TheMetaMan - I don’t feel like we watched the same movie.

@TheMetaMan - you can tell who is a real star wars fan with this easy litmus test, praising the movie that almost killed the entire franchise and ruined so many characters for the sake of "subverting expectations" is baffling. Of course he always wrote movies like this, except this time it was truly counter productive. [frick] TLJ and [frick] Rian Johnson. He peaked with Knives Out, that sequel was atrocious

@TheMetaMan - I definitely agree. As a stand-alone movie, I think it did a really good job with everybody's stories. It's place in the saga though, I'm not a fan.

Both Rian and Lucas subverted expectations, but with Rian it was just doing 180s whereas Lucas turning things upside down. It's a small difference, massive repurcussions.

@JustAWaffle - If you are referring to TLJ then we did watch the same film. You just have a different perspective. For me Rian’s take on SW was the most satisfying compared to what Abrams did with FA & ROS.
TLJ is flawed, has a flabby midsection, despite this, i resonate with it more then most SW movies. I adore Hamil’s performance of playing a jaded, weary and cynical Luke Skywalker. A legend who is now a shadow of his former self. I love the cinematography, visuals, setting, score, Snoke, Haldo, the porgs, chewie, R2, Yoda are the cherries on top. It’s not perfect but it’s utterly fulfilling and emotionally satisfying for me as a SW fan. TLJ is an experience for me. The negative criticism and backlash makes me like it even more. Art is subjective and i subjectively accept TLJ. It just does “IT” for me. Everyone has their preferences, perspectives and expectations and with SW, TLJ ticks those boxes.

@bobevanz - Reading your comment I realise how immature, ignorant and disrespectful people act when sharing opinions about movies. I love the last Jedi so what? I don’t need to justify it or defend it. If you don’t like it then fine but who are you to ridicule my perspective just because you do not agree with it. Clearly you lack intelligence, because if you didn’t then you would treat my opinion with respect, maybe with an open mind as to why I like the film so much. Instead I get a typically biased, dogmatic and narcissistic response, demonstrating the type of character that you are. You clearly lack the ability to have a genuine conversation with someone, therefore making you socially inept.
Sad but true.

@bkmeijer1 - I like this perspective. You highlighted the strengths and weaknesses of the film providing neutral criticism as opposed to having a biased or discriminative outlook on the film. I agree with all your points. As much as I like the film, even I can admit it’s faults.

@TheMetaMan - yeah, I try to as much with any IP movie. Whether that is a sequel, adaptation, remake, reboot or whatever. I can like and dislike them at the same time.

New entries in franchises should always try to add something imo, but is should still be recognizable as the IP. It's why I dislike TLJ, The Last of Us and Avatar on that front, while I do like Sonic and Super Mario Bros.

@TheMetaMan - As a stand alone film I would probably think better of it, however I do not believe that Rian was the right director to bring on for the Star Wars franchise, you are more than entitled to like the film, I would not take that away from you, however there appears to be a majority that did not like it, which was exemplified with the mad scrabble to change the following film.

Personally one of my biggest issues with the film was the mishandling of characters and the missed opportunities. Whilst you may have liked the portrayal of Luke, many including Mark Hamill did not believe that the portrayal was what it should have been. You have the way that Snoke was unceremoniously disposed of, then for me it's some of the other characters too, the way Ackbar was just killed in an instant, yes he was only in Return of the Jedi but managed to become a much loved character, you had other throw away character such as Admiral Holdo, for me it should have been Ackbar making the sacrifice for the others, leaving Holdo there to act as a counterpoint to Poe moving into the next film, her playing the cautious strategist, Poe being in the juxtaposed position of action, having her survive could have led to a brilliant dynamic as they pushed each other and changed their positions for the good of the resistance.

Now I'm not saying that I dislike all of his work, however I just don't think he is the right person to helm any future Star Wars products.

vectorsigma - 3/13/2024, 11:31 AM
@McMurdo - i think it is worth an attempt to reinvigorate the franchise. Maybe stay away from the skywalker saga and make a new one? Instead, we got ahsoka and will get back to Rey with an inexperienced director (i think?) which Disney might "subvert" again

The challenge with tlj is that it was given to him mid trilogy, but not looking at that star wars subversions, it is a great movie.

@TheMetaMan has said everything i like about it.

@TheMetaMan - You inspired me to rewatch TLJ and I can’t disagree more with you. This is the ultimate “because reasons” movie I’ve ever seen.

It’s watchable I’ll give you that, but man o man is this movie annoying.

It’s interesting to see the career route she has taken ala Robert Pattinson where she broke out with a big franchise but is now taking on more smaller/mid budget films & projects that apparently are showing her range well which is good.

Anyway , looking forward to seeing her back as Rey since I like the performance aswell as the character herself!!.

@TheVisionary25 - agreed. Think it'd be pretty cool if Ridley and Pattinson ended up starring in the same big franchise one day.

As for Ridley and Rey, I do look forward to where that's going. There's a lot of potential with the character, and I do hope they can realize that potential.

@Fogs - Josh also gaslights the readers of this site when he does this stuff. He posts factually untrue statements as facts to make the people who believe the truth question themselves and wonder if they are the odd perspective. He does it all the time. Especially with more controversial subjects tied into the modern culture war.

Outside of online, I know a good number of star wars fans. Zero of them want to see what Rey is up to yet. Even my friend’s daughters who should be the target demographic for this character. Zero. Not one fan of the character. Even amongst people who generally liked the sequels.

Impressive how they missed every target, much like the modern MCU.

I think the word you're looking for here is "troll."
mountainman
mountainman - 3/13/2024, 10:39 AM
@ClintThaHamster - There’s a difference between trolling and gaslighting.

While what Josh does could be considered trolling or engagement baiting, I say gaslighting just because he uses language in a definitive way, to state something that is not commonly known to be true, in order to make the people who don’t believe that thing question themselves.

But I get that the line between gaslighting and trolling can be a thin one.

The whole last trilogy completely sucked, so sure, let's bring em all back.

Boyega(overrated) was not responsible for all that garbage, but he still sucked in the role and didn't help make anything better.

What Star Wars needs is everyone fired who touched the last trilogy, jump 10,000 years into the future, and start all over with new characters & creatives.
