STAR WARS: New Report Reveals How Much Disney Has Made Since Acquiring Lucasfilm For $4 Billion In 2012

It was way back in 2012 that Disney acquired Lucasfilm for a whopping $4 billion, but has the investment paid off? A new report claims to reveal the huge profit the House of Mouse has made from Star Wars!

In 2012, we learned that Disney had acquired Lucasfilm for a whopping $4 billion. That saw the House of Mouse get its hands on the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises, and the studio has since done an impressive job of monetizing the former.

Star Wars is now a major part of Disney's theme parks and we've had five movies and countless TV shows, almost all of which have performed well (be it at the box office or in terms of boosting that all-important Disney+'s subscriber count).

Crucially, each of those has generated massive merchandise sales!

In a presentation which has now been made public by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission website (via SFFGazette.com), it's been confirmed that Disney has made $12 billion from the Star Wars franchise over the past 12 years. So, Disney has made back its $4 billion and then some.

Looking to the future, there are many other potentially very profitable Star Wars projects on the horizon. While Disney seems to be putting less of a focus on streaming, The Acolyte and Skeleton Crew are heading our way this year and several movies are in the works, including The Mandalorian & Grogu and a Daisy Ridley-led Rey project.

"Lucasfilm reflects the extraordinary passion, vision, and storytelling of its founder, George Lucas," Bob Iger said of the acquisition way back in 2012. "This transaction combines a world-class portfolio of content including Star Wars, one of the greatest family entertainment franchises of all time, with Disney’s unique and unparalleled creativity across multiple platforms, businesses, and markets to generate sustained growth and drive significant long-term value."

Star Wars creator and former Lucasfilm CEO, George Lucas, also shared a statement at the time. He'd initially been led to believe that the new Star Wars sequel trilogy would be based on his outlines; ultimately, the decision was made to head down a different route.

"For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next," he said. "It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."

"I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come," Lucas continued. "Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products."

$tar War$

Most of that revenue probably came from pimping out Baby Yoda/Grogu.

@UniqNo - Someone here was adamant Grogu wasn’t profitable though. I can’t remember who it was, but it was one you.

@FireandBlood - The amount of toys, t shirts and memorabilia that sold...pleeease! it's going to be a long term earner aswell. Main reason Mando is getting his own movie and they ditched the storyline of Grogu staying with Luke.

@Matchesz - None. I just get more Star Wars to enjoy while the rest of you sit there miserable af because Kathleen Kennedy got in the way of your white male power fantasy.

@FireandBlood - im like 3% french, goes to show how delusional disney’s woke army is. If you cant recognize the dip in quality starwars took after the disney takeover then idk what to tell you bud. Disney likes to show off how much money they make, but it’s really no different to me than Cardi B flexing her money

@FireandBlood - You have no creative ideas, therefore you need to steal from the white man and claim it as your own. LOL.

@Matchesz - Dip in quality? 😂😂

Buddy, we were coming off the prequels. You can try revise history all you want, but they were outright [frick]ing hated by the fandom all the way up until TLJ when you lot wanted to start doing all this revisionist history like Star Wars was ever this high brow blockbuster entertainment.

Star Wars is what it’s always been, a series of inconsistent quality that’s position in pop culture has cemented its staying power.

@IronMan616 - I’m half white. I’m just not insecure about my whiteness like the rest of you.

You spent 30+ years with all white male Jedi leads playing the Mary Sue. You’ll be alright if the girls and POC have a turn.

@FireandBlood - The sequels had the original cast though.. there was really no reason at all that the Kennedy trilogy had to be worse than the prequels. And with it being the future and the advances in technology they got no excuse. Prequels are beloved now because at least Lucas took a chance and a lot of good concepts and visuals came out of those movies. The sequels had zero originality at all except for the parts that failed

@Matchesz - Okay, and? Rogue One was better than the prequels. Mando is better than the prequels. Ahsoka was better than the prequels. Andor is arguably the best Star Wars in terms of quality yet. The prequels are “loved” now because you guys found something new to hate, just like RotJ. Same thing with happen with the sequels soon. You types already established a pattern.

@FireandBlood - aaaaaaaaand there we go with that political view. I don't give two cents about your color. I'm asian myself and i don't mind what's on my screen.i love miles morales. And it doesn't have to do with his skin color. I swear almost all of users on this site always put their western view in every media is just downright annoying. That's why the whole world are now noticing how woke western view is.

@FireandBlood - ahsoka was better than the prequels? Hahahahahaha don't make me laugh. It's the most boring series i've seen so far. The choreo are weak asf and the story was just there. Rogue one has it's moments. Mando was breath of fresh air until it wasn't. Say what you want about the dialogue in the Prequels but it has a story to tell. Unlike the rushed sequel trilogy kennedy/disney made.

@FireandBlood - TLJ was so bad that it somehow made the prequels good in the eyes of the fandom and you are dying on THIS hill?????

@FireandBlood - buddy ignoring the immense popularity of Lando is insane. He's getting a literal tv show and that isn't because of Solo...a film that tanked. Lando wasn't just a good character he was a GREAT character. There was grey there, nuance within his very first appearance. He is one of the primary reasons Empire is so great.

And then pretending people didn't love Mace Windu?

Giga copium man.

@FireandBlood - Rogue One the film with how many black characters in starring roles? But yes you had some great Asian and Latino casting. You know what films had some great black actor's and roles?

EMPIRE, ROTJ, THE PREQUELS.

do better.

@Gabimaru - he sees color first and foremost. In his antempt to signal anti-racism, he ironically...or perhaps UN-ironically becomes the one who highlights color the most. The very notion these folks pretend to fight for on Internet comments sections is the very notion they end up betraying. The scary thing is how their delusion completely and utterly blind them to it all. It's just sad.

@McMurdo - They're all sensitive. bunch of p#$$!#$ i tell you. Give me an asian joke and i will laugh with you. give them a black joke and they will bring their torch. I pity these people living in america eating every agenda driven that woke media is telling them to do.

Acolyte, Skeleton Crew, and Rey movie will all be failures.

Mando & Grogu will make money since Disney found their little cute merchandising opportunity to exploit. Let’s see how long that Magguffin can carry the franchise.
