TRON: Legacy is a 3D high-tech adventure set in a digital world that’s unlike anything ever captured on the big screen. Sam Flynn (Garrett Hedlund), a rebellious 27-year-old, is haunted by the mysterious disappearance of his father Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), a man once known as the world’s leading video-game developer. When Sam investigates a strange signal sent from the old Flynn’s Arcade—a signal that could only come from his father—he finds himself pulled into a digital world where Kevin has been trapped for 20 years. With the help of the fearless warrior Quorra (Olivia Wilde), father and son embark on a life-and-death journey across a visually-stunning cyber universe—a universe created by Kevin himself that has become far more advanced with never-before-imagined vehicles, weapons, landscapes and a ruthless villain who will stop at nothing to prevent their escape.

Having not seen the original (and knowing little to nothing about it) I went in to Tron: Legacy with completely fresh eyes. To be perfectly honest, I wasn't all that excited about the movie despite the rather cool trailers and huge amount of marketing from Disney. However, I can honestly say that I was blown away by it. It was no Inception in terms of originality and I've seen better 3D, but it was still a very enjoyable 2 hours, helped most of all by a stellar cast of actors.

After watching this movie, I can understand why people wanted Garrett Hedlund to play Captain America. The guy is an impressive actor and as Sam Flynn handled the action scenes very well, and made for a very likeable lead. He also has an authoritave enough presence to make me think he'd make a great superhero regardless of who it might end up being. Jeff Bridges was (as you might expect from an actor of his caliber) fantastic. Playing the older Kevin Flynn and the villainous Clu, he nails the role of both a caring father and I guess what you
might describe as an insane dictator. It's a pity really that neither of them get all that much time, and the movie could have perhaps done with an extra few minutes to explore them more, especially for those who like myself have not seen the original. (although the handful of flashbacks were a great help) It's Olivia Wilde that really impresses here though. I already knew that she was a great actress based on watching her in House, but she proves in this movie that her career is destined for the big screen. She kicks ass and makes you care about Quorra in equal measure, and delivers plenty of subtle and interesting moments, to make her character one of the most memorable. The supporting cast are all great, with an interesting performance from Beau Garrett and a show stealing set of scenes from the brilliant Michael Sheen.

As this is a spoiler-free review, I'm obviously not going to go into great detail about the plot, but it's fair to say that it was an enjoyable and well written movie. There's nothing hugely original on display, although there are a fair few surprises along the way (one in particular I'm sure fans of the original will get a kick out of) and plenty of memorable moments even though the characters aren't as fleshed out or explored as some might hope.

The 3D was...acceptable. Like most films though, it was nothing compared to Avatar. You could put it down to artistic license that they filmed the Earth scenes in 2D, and the Tron ones in 3D. I call it Disney trying to save a few bucks. After all, I just paid extra for a ticket and 30 minutes of the film wasn't what I paid for. Plus, there are several scenes (Sam riding his motorbike down the freeway for example) that would've benefitted from being in 3D. Regardless, while it helped enhance the world of Tron, I can't help but feel that it was underused with only a single moment taking full advantage of impressive 3D effects. It basically looked good but was underwhelming.

The CGI however was excellent. They bring the world of Tron: Legacy together brilliantly with plenty of stunning and breathtaking views of the unique world of the Grid. Between the awesome fights and lightcycle sequences, there are loads of cool set pieces on offer here. As I've said above though, it's a pity that the 3D doesn't take more of an advantage of them. The biggest effect here though is making Jeff Bridges look 20 years younger. Does it work? Yes and no. It's certainly an impressive achievement to make it look as good as it does, but the technology just isn't there yet to make it look 100% convincing. It works in the world of the Grid, but Clu still has a shiny and rather wooden look to his face...sort of like a more advanced version of Tom Hanks in The Polar Express. Everything else was perfect, including the soundtrack - very fitting for this sort of movie.

If you think about the finer details of this movie too much, you might leave feeling frustrated. Don't expect to get many answers in terms of how the whole thing works or for that matter why. Enjoy it for what it is - a fun two hours with plenty of great action scenes and a lot of stellar acting. A popcorn movie that I certainly hope gets a sequel.

Same goes for the first movie.

Cool review Josh. It sounds like they have gone a bit 'Wizard of Oz', with the 3D. As 'Wizard of Oz' was filmed in Black and White, when they were in Kansas but in colour when they were in Oz, 'Tron' has filmed the Earth scenes in 2D but filmed the digital world in 3D. If that makes any sense.
I'm hoping to see this on Monday morning with no one in the cinema.

Yeah!!

gotta agree with xandera i didn't want to read it because i was worried about spoilers even though i don't think they would have been that big a deal. I guess i could have read the part that said "SPOILER FREE" LOL, but i definitely appreciate your approach to movie reviews seems very grounded and open to the experience. I like that!

I thought this movie was "totally radical man." The perfect sequel, IMO. Everything was top notch, IMO. Big fan of the original.

Story, visuals, soundtrack, and acting was just great, IMO.

great review Josh. I'm(hopefully) seeing it 2mo night. Most of the criticisms of it have been very similar so I'm not expecting anything too special in the story department!

Hedlund would make a GREAT Terry McGinnis (Batman Beyond) I command you to repeat that!!!! I've tried to look at the TRON concept this way: In '82 it was the MATRIX of its day. The whole 'I got sucked into a computer program' thing. The sequel expanding on that idea. The Matrix doesn't make much sense either, but it's still really cool to watch (the first one, anyway). But we see digitalized faces of people in video games everyday, don't we? The Sims, Second Life, World of Warcraft, every first person shooter and roleplaying videogame ever made, etc. If you look at the movie concept in that way, it does make more sense. Clu's facial appearance kind of fits. Keep in mind: this is NOT criticism of your review. Just something to consider.

Love Hedlund as an actor but he doesn't have what it takes to be Cap. Reason being no matter how much facial hair you put on him, he still looks like a kid. He can be VERY authoritative but only to lead a gang of goons, period. He'd have been THE PERFECT Winter Soldier but could never pull off a decent Steve Rogers. I don't even know if he'll ever be able to. He's very similar to Leo Dicaprio, Tom Welling and Elija Wood to me. They all look like they'll be forever young. And Cap has always been a Man's man! That'll probably never be Hedlund.

Great review though, Josh! ;)

i just returned from the 10:30 showing in Chatsworth....took the day off. Ok i am a fan of the original so having said that i can only say that i was totally blown away by this movie beyond my expectations. I REALLY dont understand the critics on this one but i might thank them for maybe lowering my expectations only to have them realigned in the theater.wow wow WOW!! i loved this movie and felt an emotional connection as i like many others have father son issues in both directions. Cast was great, visuals spectacular, and the music.....Daft Punk may actually be god as Anil says. GO SEE IT AND ENJOY!!

Thanks for your comments guys! :)

Intruder: Haha, love that picture! He would have definitely been a good choice for Hawkeye...not thought of that before actually. I've always thought he's make a great Winter Soldier/Bucky-Cap as well. I'd definitely like to see both him and Olivia Wilde take on superhero roles. I'm beginning to think that the latter would make a great Maria Hill actually!

Bigbywolf: Good thinking, lol! I went with a friend this morning, and there was literally only four other people in there apart from us! (probably something to do with the fact it was snowing heavily outside as well though)

Xandera/Brashlight: Not a problem guys. I can't tell you the amount of times I've read a review which gives away even minor details that ends up ruining the movie. (nothing worse than waiting for something you know will happen at some point IMO) That's why I'm always extra careful to give a good idea about whether what I review is any good, without messing it up for anyone whose not seen it!

Dane: Sorry man, but I'm not giving away any details - while the story isnt exactly "complicated", even a few small things would surely end up ruining it for you! As I've said above though, there are a few things that'll make fans of the original very happy.

ROR: It's definitely best to go in with low expectation in terms of the story bud! That's not to say it's bad, but it's far from anything special/original. Not a bad thing necessarily because it's still very enjoyable, but there's a reason why something like Inception will be nominated for an Oscar and this wont I guess, lol! Anyway, enjoy - I look forward to reading your review as well.

skidz: That's a very good point and how I chose to think of it as well. However, it looks just as dodgy in the Earth set scenes and is actually a little out of place when all the other faces set in the Grid actually look 100% human. (as they're obviously played by actual actors!) Still, it's really not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things and didnt take me out of the movie at all. Just something I singled out because of all the talk surrounding it!

Shaman: I hear ya man. Hell, I'm still hoping that Jensen Ackles will be cast as Captain America. Sigh...maybe in the reboot, lol! ;D

Awesome review Josh! :)
The only knowledge that I have had about the original has been mainly from pop culture references and the video game Kingdom Hearts II (the GRID served as one of the levels, although it was renamed "Space Paranoids" for the game for some reason) so I'm new to this as most people. Yours and everyone elses' reviews have been praising towards the effects and scope of the film, with the only weak spot being the story as I could tell from the trailer. It's good to hear that the acting is more than good though. This is definately a popcorn film to have fun with, and sure looks like some fun. Good to hear that this is worth seeing! And keep up the fine work!

another thing i find funny is the fact the critics keep picking on Tron for apeing other movies but Avatar gets a pass for copying Dances with Wolves....Last Samurai...etc. The turret scene from Star Wars..really...thats a big reach and very creative at the same time. i would have never noticed had a critic not made that comparrison.

Was at the midnight show last night. Very good, everything I was expecting. Great as a sequal, and as a stand alone film. Way better than Avatar! The Score was just amazeing, Daft Punk kicked ass, and I so want that jukebox from the arcade scene!

Radical is the best word to describe this movie.

I also was completely and constantly blown away during the entire movie. It was fantastic!

I have mere memories from the first one, but this is something that is completely unbelievable.

they should remake the first tron movie and show how everything was made and how everything came about in detail. like how they did it with the first iron man. and use this movie as the second 1. they can still do it, if they did that, i believe it would top avitar in the box office and ironman 1.
