QUEER And CHALLENGERS Director Luca Guadagnino Reportedly Set To Helm SGT. ROCK Movie For DC Studios

Two separate sources are reporting that Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Queer) is in talks to helm a movie for DC Studios, and it might just be Sgt. Rock!

Luca Guadagnino (Challengers, Call Me By Your Name, Suspiria) may not seem like the most obvious fit to helm a comic book/superhero movie, but the filmmaker is believed to be in talks with DC Studios to direct an upcoming DCU project.

Jeff Sneider first mentioned that Guadagnino - whose latest film, Queer, is screening at the Venice Film Festival - was "being courted for a future DCU project" in his newsletter, and Nexus Point News later weighed in, claiming to reveal the project he's in talks to direct.

According to the site, Guadagnino is set to helm a Sgt. Rock movie, and his Challengers and Queer collaborator Justin Kuritzkes is on board to pen the script. The project is said to be a "period piece set during World War II."

We've been hearing whispers of a potential Sgt. Rock movie for quite a while, and attempts to get a film based on the character off the ground go all the way back to the late '80s, when Arnold Schwarzenegger was briefly attached to play the lead. Bruce Willis was also said to be in talks to play Rock in a movie helmed by Guy Ritchie back in 2008.

Producer Joel Silver revealed that this take on the properly was going to be set in the future during a 2010 interview with LA Times.

"It [takes place] a little bit in the future. As a war movie, it's not going to be 'where it's been,' it's going to be 'where it's going.' We didn't want to do Iraq, we didn't want to do a contemporary war. We wanted to do a sort of futuristic war. It's pretty strong. Chad St. John wrote the script and we've got Francis Lawrence involved in developing it with us. It's not a 'go' movie yet but I'm feeling good about it."

Sgt. Franklin Rock was created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, debuting in the pages of Our Army at War #83 in 1959. Rock was a member of the Easy Company, a unit that fought in the European Theatre during World War II and consisted of a disparate group of individuals who managed to participate in every major action in the European war.

@defenderofthefaith - I usually find something like able in most movies…. Even if I hate a movie or am disappointed with the final film. I can usually find at least one scene I enjoyed. That didn’t happen with the challengers… it just felt slow, with characters that I wasn’t the least interested in, or cared about. My friend loved it, not sure what he loved about it!🤔

If true then such an odd yet interesting choice…

I mean I can kind of see it but also not really since from what I know of his work , some of his films atleast tend to have a erotic nature to them which idk if fits this property lol.

I’ll wait and see but regardless , I’m cool with seeing a Sgt Rock film…

Have it take some inspiration from Saving Private Ryan or even Band of Brothers/The Pacific.

Depends on the context. A historical drama? Yes, of course. But a romantic farce? A fantasy movie? A comic book adaptation? Who cares? Sgt Rock has fought Zombies in the comics, but GAY zombies would be a bridge too far, let alone black people and women?

If I was right,why cant they just soldiers, why does sexuality always have to be included with everything. We all know gay people exist most people just don't care. I disagree. Fantastical depictions of historical period are an important component of fiction, as are historically accurate depictions. There are heavy, serious movies like the Northman that feature 100% white vikings, and that's fine. There are light, inconsequential movies like How To Train Your Dragon that feature non-white vikings, and that's also fine. It's just movies, man.

Things like game of thrones managed to do diversity properly by having people from different regions look and act differently. Things like the rings of power and wheel of time have tiny villages in the mountains with demos comparable to modern NYC. I dont care about cartoons.

I'm not, and neither are you. Both of us believe every word we're saying, and both of us are likely some combination of correct and incorrect. Are there examples of ham-fisted, lazy casting in an effort to quickly give the appearance of racial equity? Absolutely. Is there a century-long tradition of white people being cast in the vast majority of roles, including roles that would go to non-white actors today? Absolutely.

And, honestly, sincerely, I think you and I would even agree that we would never recommend that a casting director choose someone for a role based solely on their race, or that decisions about the race of a character shouldn't be based on any kind of racial quota. And that has happened, and probably will happen again.

Where we disagree is the frequency with which that's actually happening; and, perhaps, whether or not it's ever a good idea.

TL;DR: IMO, saying "We need a black person in this, make that character black" is bad; saying "We don't care what race the character is, so all races and ethnicities will be considered" isn't.

I dont see a problem with century of mostly white actors in hollywood, considering the demographic of the US during the majority of that timeframe. It would be the same as criticizing the lack of diversity in the japanese, Korean or Indian film industry.

I also dont agree that all ethnicities should be considered for every part. And that's where authenticity comes in. Even if its fantasy or fiction, it should still make logical sense just like any other other system they are they to build in that world.

Where I say you're being dishonest is in how you represent what I am saying and in how you both acknowledge DEI hiring exists and discredit the frequency at which it is happening.

The only real disadvantage someone can claim is economically or if they have some form or physical or neurological disability. Race and gender discrimination is protected by the constitution in the US and the charter of rights in Canada.

Casting white people as Asian, Native American, Latino, or African American characters is inexcusable during any part of the 20th century, but I'll grant you that America's demographics were primarily white for the first 50 years or so of the film industry. The roles that non-white actors got were also part of the problem. They were primarily servants, comic relief, or both.

That was an oversimplification on my part. I do think that there are some situations (historical figures or fictional characters whose race/ethnicity is integral to their character) where casting should be narrowed. Generally speaking, though, those roles are few and far between.

It's happening, it's happening less frequently than many claim, and, on balance it's a good thing, IMO.

And yet predominately black communities are policed more than their white counterparts, unarmed black men are shot more frequently per capita than unarmed white men, black communities are routinely targeted by racial gerrymandering cloaked as partisan gerrymandering, women make 82¢ on the dollar when compared to men doing the same jobs, women's healthcare rights are under threat in a way that men's healthcare rights have never been, et cetera, ad nauseum.

I believe that most discrimination that exists is when an individual is in a position to make a discretionary call on their own. In group preferences are a thing. Maybe you should look into which groups engage in this the most for yourself.

When you say things like over-policing, how is that quantified? Is it based on the number of officers in an area in relation to the number of crimes committed?

When it comes to the judicial system, well at least in canada, the benefits only go to non-white people. This includes illegal immigrants.
