The Guys at Empire have reported this lil bit of info....

Joel Silver has been trying to get the DC Comics’ World War II-based, cigar-chewing, bullet-spewing tough guy hero started for as long time aparently. Even Arnold Schwarzenegger was rumoured to play Rock for a long time, and virtually every action writer in Hollywood has taken an attempt at the script, from Brian Helgeland to Steven E. DeSouza to John Milius, but we never saw anything.

Most recently, Guy Ritchie attached himself to direct, before moving onto Lobo.



But now as Silver has brought I Am Legend and Constantine director, Francis Lawrence and new screenwriter, Chad St. John, to write and direct what would be a radical overhaul for Sgt.Rock and the men of Easy Company.





It seems like Lawrence and St. John will be taking the World War II hero into the future. Apparently, the WWII setting has caused concern for Warner Bros despite the success of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and the forthcoming The First Avenger: Captain America.

I was looking at a 20 year old issue of Comics Scene magazine the other day, and there was a blurb in there about how Willis was 'scheduled' to play Sgt. Rock in the upcoming movie...this shite takes forever!

Answering Teabag's questions:

1) Hell NO! That sucks! WW2 IS the setting for Sgt. Rock. They just can't change that, or it won't be the same

2) No, not really. But they SHOULD be. If it's as big a hit as I am hoping for they better worry.

3) Good question. A lot of guys would work. Kurt Russel maybe? With htree days of stubble, a few weeks worth of field grime, and the miserable disposition of someone that has been sleeping on the ground and living on C ratz, and a whole lot of guys would start to seem like Rock lol

I agree that Rock should always be WWII. And, not only do WE agree with it, the late Robert Kahinger(who along with Joe Kubert created the character) once said that Sgt Rock belonged to the WWII time. Kahinger even had plans to kill the character off at the end of the war, but he never got around to writing that story.....and then Sgt Rock starts popping up all over the DCU, Suicide squad springs to mind. I really love the character, but I don't want to see him in any new stories that don't occur in WWII.

While a story about soldiers in the future could be very good, it would NOT be a Sgt Rock story!

@ MsKyle... Sgt. Rock is like the most loved and possibly the best war comic of all time. It was published by DC for about 30 years
It's just one of those titles, that garners a certain level of respect from readers and collectors simply because it's been around so long and stayed in there when so many others are failing. Kind of like the man himself.
Sargent Rock gets shot and hit with shrapnel pretty routinely, but always makes it anyway, and keeps right on fightin

They actually made a pretty good Sgt Rock and Easy Company movie almost 30 years ago. "The Big Red One" with Lee Marvin playing the role of the grizzled NCO.

IF they make a Sgt Rock movie they need to remember the rest of Easy Company. those other characters(Wild Man, Ice Cream Soldier, Little Sure Shot, et al) are as much a part of the story as Frank Rock.

I prefer Sgt. Rock to be set in WWII. But I have a feeling the Sgt. Rock movie will be based on Vietnam or Desert Storm.
