Disney+ has released the first full trailer for America Born Chinese, a new fantasy action series from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings Director Destin Daniel Cretton.

Adapted from the celebrated graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang, the story follows Jin Wang (Ben Wang) who is having a hard time as the only Asian-American student in his high-school until new transfer student Wei-Chen (Jim Liu) shows up. The two become friends, but Jin soon comes to realize that there's a lot more to his new pal than meets the eye.

Not only does Wei-Chen have mystical abilities, but his arrival at Jin's school is accompanied by several gods from Chinese mythology making their grand entrance, including Sun Wukong the Monkey King (Daniel Wu) and Guanyin, the goddess of mercy (Michelle Yeoh).

These powerful beings need Jin's help to stop a portal opening between the different realms of Heaven and Earth.

"The fact of the matter is, any kid who's 15-16 years old, is in the process of identity formation," showrunner Kelvin Yu stells EW. "I don't care what decade or century they're living in, or culture, it sucks. That suckiness can be beautiful, it can be hilarious, it can be tragic, it can be delicious, it can be all of these things. This particular character, Jin, happens to have the added awkwardness of parents who don't speak his language fluently, a mixing of cultures, and some not-so-politically-correct representations of himself that he also has to juggle. We just wanted to tell the story of what's going on inside of a kid like that."

The series also features Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and James Hong, who all appeared alongside Yeoh in Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Check out the trailer and a new poster below.

All episodes of American Born Chinese hit Disney+ on May 24.

Using eeaao to promote this is low.

@vectorsigma - Ummm... huh?

@vectorsigma - they didn't use EEAAO to promote this, like at all. They don't even mention that these actors recently won Oscar's. There is zero mention of EEAAO in the marketing.

Its just much of the same cast because Michelle Yeoh was probably attached really early and brought in her friends. This literally happens all the time in Hollywood.

@Itwasme - there was a teaser during oscar week of this. Maybe not outright saying eeaao, but the mention of "oscar nominees" will somehow give one that idea. The headline is even using it

@vectorsigma - the studio didn't write the article...

And of course and project SHOULD mention if they have award winning actors in it. It's actually surprising this doesn't. So no need to overreact even if they did mention "Oscar winner" which of course they don't.

@vectorsigma - lol how so? It’s got the entire main cast.

@vectorsigma - yeah, that's so silly. Why would a project use the fact that it has cast members from an award winning film, Who would do that? They need to go back to marketing school.

@FriendoGhus - yeah, like how eeaao marketing did not mention "from the directors of avengers endgame" like some other productions.

Wait, isn't this just shang chi?

These two Chinese Americans become friends in school, only for it to be revealed one of them is this Kung fu master who's origins are linked to a mystical realm.

And considering how creative everything everywhere all at once was (which this movie is clearly trying to remind us of), it's such a shame how they're recycling ideas.

@Origame - I agree. It does remind me a lot of Shang-Chi and EEAAO. Thus using both to market this (like @vectorsigma) above might not be the best strategy

If Daniel Wu is in this, then you know the choreography will at least be good.

Having read the graphic novel, I can honestly say I'm disappointed. This looks nothing like the original story and feels super generic.

They keep recycling the same ideas with the main selling point... LOOK! They're Chinese!!!

@DocSpock - that’s like complaining about the hero’s journey story. It’s been remade 1000s of time with no complaints.

As a white American dude married to a Chinese woman with two little girls being raised with two different cultural backgrounds, this might be one of the few D+ shows they might be interested in. Oh, wait, it's got fantasy and super powers and shit. Never mind.

This is just starting to feel like those 70’s Exploitation movies.
