SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Star Jake Gyllenhaal Reveals How Close He Came To Playing Spidey In 2004

Due to an injury sustained on the set of Seabiscuit, Tobey Maguire nearly dropped out of Spider-Man 2 and Jake Gyllenhaal was named as a possible replacement. So, just how close did that come to happening?

Jake Gyllenhaal is currently promoting Spider-Man: Far From Home, a movie that sees him take on the role of Mysterio. However, it was over fifteen years ago that the actor very nearly ended up starring as Peter Parker himself in Spider-Man 2 when it looked like Tobey Maguire would be forced to drop out.

The actor had injured his back on Seabiscuit and his return was looking unlikely, so Sony Pictures started looking elsewhere and Gyllenhaal was named as the favourite to replace him.

Now, he's revealed how close that came to becoming a reality. "There are so many roles in my career where I was up against another actor, or something happened that possibly could’ve happened but didn’t happen but maybe it would have. Eventually my belief is when an actor’s played a character, particularly in a movie, the character’s theirs, and that’s that."

"But yeah [Maguire] hurt himself and there was talk," he confirmed. "And there was a slew of actors [possibly up for the part], and I was one of them."

It doesn't sound like he was as close to playing the wall-crawler as we were led to believe at the time, and Gyllenhaal has largely stayed away from blockbusters since. Why? Blame it on Prince of Persia. "I think I learned a lot from that movie in that I spend a lot of time trying to be very thoughtful about the roles that I pick and why I’m picking them. And you’re bound to slip up and be like, ‘That wasn’t right for me,’ or ‘That didn’t fit perfectly.’ There have been a number of roles like that."

Gyllenhaal is fantastic in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and with the movie receiving rave reviews from critics, here's hoping he considers doing working on more big releases moving forward!

@dracula

Did you watch the theatrical cut or the director’s cut? The theatrical cut is really great imo while the director’s cut is really convoluted and pretentious.

I think Gyllenhaal still would make an incredible Joker

@Imfunnyhow - TY> When I first saw The Purge I thought to myself that he'd grow up to be the Joker one day.

@dracula - He was pretty good in Hannibal Rising, even though the movie itself was pretty meh. He maybe could work. I had briefly considered him at one point but I was worried about 2 things. First, I've never heard him do an American accent. If he can pull it off, great. Second, he has that weird scar on his left cheek. Now I know they could work that into his look and story, but the last two Jokers have been a scarred face Joker and a Scarface Joker and I was looking a little more traditional.

@inkniron - I could see him as either Joker or Doctor Doom. His scar could be covered up with make up, or if they want incorporated into the design, didn't realize that was a scar, though it just looked like that when he smiled.

I would have preferred they cast him in the 2002 Spider-man. Unpopular opinion, I never bought into Toby as Peter Parker.

I really liked Tobey and the first two Spidey movies are great but I think Jake would have been an over all better choice from the beginning. Jake gives you the biggest thing Tobey doesn't to me and that's maturity to the character. With Tobey he always looks kinda goofy and old school nerdy. In the comics Peter matures and becomes a cool nerd. He doesn't stay a goof ball his entire life.

Since they brought in both Gyllenhaal and Keaton, can they try and cast Bale as Kraven? We all know how much muscle that guy can put on

I think if Gyllenhaal was cast as Parker, we would need a different MJ. To me Dunst wouldn’t counter him well as she did Tobey.
