Comments from former Sony-chief turned film producer Amy Pascal created a mini-panic among the comic book movie fandom when many sites misinterpreted her statement regarding the unprecedented Spider-Man contract between Sony and Marvel as a firm declaration that Sony would make future Spider-Man movies not set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's established continuity. However, statements from film producer Eric Carroll (Thor, Thor: The Dark World, Agent Carter) firmly refutes such notions in his remarks to set visit reporters. “We really want to do multiple movies where he’s in high school,” said Carroll. He added, "Going forward we would definitely treat [future Spider-Man movies] all as the same slate. So we would be as strategic about where future Spider-Man movies fall in the MCU of it all as we would if Sony weren’t involved, because there’s nothing in it for us or Sony to put a movie out at the wrong time or start confusing the continuity."
When Tom Holland was similarly asked about future installments, he specifically mentioned Venom as a character he'd like his wall-crawler to tangle with. “Well, I love Doc Ock. I think Spider-Man 2 is one of the greatest superhero movies ever made. But I think Venom is someone I’d love to kick the crap out of one day.” Of course it should be noted that this interview was conducted a number of months ago, well before Sony announced that their Venom movie (and their Silver Sable pic) would not be part of the MCU.
Pascal also weighed-in, adding, "We’ve recycled a lot," in regards to covering the same material across the Sam Raimi and Marc Webb Spider-Man films. “I think there are certain characters I don’t think there’s anything more to say about them right this minute? I mean, I don’t know how many more times we can do the Green Goblin. I’ve certainly tried to do it fifty.”
Carroll closed out the topic by adding that the Green Goblin clan are unlikely to be revisited. “We want to tread lightly with what’s been done in the past films as far as The Osbornes and things like that. So I don’t think we’re going directly down that route. We figured honestly if there was a way to do this movie without mentioning anyone who has been in past films, with the exception of staples like Flash Thompson and Aunt May, that that might be a good thing to do.”
Of course, if Doc Ock and Green Goblin are off the table, that opens the door for villains like Chameleon, Kraven and the much-requested Mysterio to make their live-action debuts. Next to Batman, Spider-Man definitely has one of the better rogue's gallery in comics and it's high-time characters besides the usual suspects make their introductions to the non-comic book reading populace.
