Tom Holland Believes Fans Will Love SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING's New Take On The Webslinger's Origin

Is there a secret, amateur wrestling career in this Spider-Man's backstory?  Did he inadvertently cause Uncle Ben's death?  What about the wallcrawler's all-important mantra, 'With Great Power, Comes Great Responsibility'?  With the radioactive spider bite and Uncle Ben's death happening off screen - prior to Spidey's first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, there's a lot that's unknown about this particular version of Peter Parker.

Also, with Tony Stark's prominence in the early stages of Spidey's superhero career, there's a lot of modernizing and situational tweaks to the classic origin that are necessary for the character's introduction into the pre-established history of the MCU.

Tom Holland acknowledges that there's a lot that's changing but he believes these adjustments will ultimately be for the better.  "It is a version of Spider-Man we have not seen before and I think the trailer really portrays that. It might take audiences just a half beat to adjust to the new take but I think once they do they will fall in love with it.

Director Tom Watts echoed, "The challenge is to figure out how to make this new and fresh and feel vital.  That is why you go to the movies, to see stories you haven’t seen before  and that is what we are trying to do with this. The best coming of age movies get you into the head of the main character and make you feel the way they do. I wanted to keep it in his world, on his level."

Huh.

I thought they were going the "all you know about the character is true for this movie, we won't dwell on it" route.
