SPIDER-MAN: BEYOND THE SPIDER-VERSE Release Date Delay Addressed By Producers Phil Lord & Chris Miller

Sony Pictures recently confirmed that Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse's release date is now "TBD," and franchise producers Phl Lord and Chris Miller have broken their silence on the disappointing news.

With no definitive end in sight for the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Sony Pictures recently pushed back a number of upcoming movies, including Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was very much The Empire Strikes Back of the animated trilogy, ending with a major cliffhanger sending up the next instalment. That left fans eager to return to dive back into the Spider-Verse, but the wait looks set to be considerably longer than first expected.

While Beyond the Spider-Verse meeting its planned March 2024 release always seemed doubtful, the fact the threequel's release date is now "TBD" (which is essentially the same as an indefinite delay) has left us all reeling.

Talking to Digital Spy (via Toonado.com) about their new movie Strays, producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller made it clear the movie will...well, it will get here when it gets here.

"Those conversations are thankfully above our paygrade," Lord said of the delay, "but I can tell you we're already hard at work on it, and we'll take the time it takes to make it great," confirming the movie will only be released "when it is ready."

Miller chimed in to add, "What we're trying to accomplish with the film is have it be the most satisfying conclusion to the story than it can be, and take it to places that you haven’t been before. And make you laugh and cry, and cheer and think."

Even before the release date delay was made official, we'd heard that none of the cast had recorded lines and the animation wasn't close to being done. Now, there's even talk of Beyond the Spider-Verse swinging into theaters as late as 2026.

That would be a crushing wait for fans excited to see how the story ends, but we'd be remiss not to remind you there was a five-year gap between Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its eventual follow-up...

Who is "reeling" at this? Even as I watched the movie I was like "no way another one of these is coming in March next year."

"I can tell you we're already hard at work on it"

I'll say it again, it is STUNNING to me that they waited until the first movie was out to start production on the second. The should've been doing pre-prod and VO recording while the first film was being animated, then rolled directly on to the animation of the second movie.

Sony, hire me as a producer! It seems easy!

@ClintThaHamster - Why should they have done that? Wouldn't really change much.

@Drace24 - The original release dates announced were 6/2/23 and 3/29/24. It doesn't make any sense to secure a release date 9 months after the first installment if production wasn't already rolling.

Movie was good but not no Godfather 2 or Empire strikes back. The themes are a bit repetitive and already done on the 1st one. Phil and Lord miller have to work harder because the delays are their fault. Apparently these guys have been taking too many breaks compared to the vfx artists and are not storyboarding so nothing can be animated. Part 2 & 3 should've been storyboarded and shot back to back.

Part 3 is probably going to be like Incredibles 2 where it picks up right after part 1, but in reality we waited like 10+ years for it lol

Both assholes the way they treated the animation team. [frick] them both.

@CaptainCheese - The movies were worth it. It's the impending release date that causes the conflict, but this time there isn't one and there'll probably be a VFX union at that point too, so all problems will be dissolved.

Them being assholes has been overblown. They were demanding and pushed the animators in an already stressful environment with too little time and too little pay. They weren't being unneccesarily cruel or anything. And they weren't the problem. The problem was the lack of time and money. Now, thankfully, that's no longer a problem.
