Jane Levy better choice to play Mary Jane than Shailene Woodley

Why I think Jane Levy would have been a better choice to play Mary Jane over Shailene Woodley.

The Amazing Spider-Man was a hit at the box office this past summer with a sequel release date May 2, 2014. Marc Webb is returning to his director chair and will be looking to introduce new characters into the mix. Die hard Spider-Man fans know that in the comics that Gwen Stacey is killed by the hands of the Green Goblin which logic tells us will more than likely take place in the sequel with Emma Stone herself acknowledged and is looking forward to Gwen's inevitable death saying to moment is an important part to her character's story. So with Gwen's fatal fate Peter Parker will find comfort right into the arms of Mary Jane Watson.

It has been reported that Shailene Woodley has been cast in the role of Mary Jane Watson for the second and third installments of the franchise but is she really right for the role? When I think of Mary Jane I imagine her being a young beautiful, smart, fierce, with supreme confidence. Shailene Woodley may be a good actress but I just don't get that kind of vibe from her and her voice sounds like that of a ten-year-old. Her resume and body of work doesn't really wow me so I'm sure how she ultimately won. But the thing that stands out more than anything is she doesn't even look the part to play Mary Jane.

My ideal choice for the role of Mary Jane Watson would've been Jane Levy. Jane Levy is one of Hollywood's best breakout stars to explode on the scene. She would be perfect for the role of Mary Jane Watson opposite Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. First and foremost Levy is strikingly beautiful, she just looks like Mary Jane's real life doppelganger. Levy definitely has shown her range of acting skills from staring in a hit comedy series ABC's Surburgatory to being in teen comdey Fun Size which ironicly a young boy dressed as Spider-Man that gets lost a an Halloween party, to having the lead role in the horror remake The Evil Dead. Levy has all of the attributes to play Mary Jane, she's beautiful, smart, spunky and seems like the girl next door who you wouldn't mind taking home to your mother but also has a sense of vulnerability.

Sony has blown it in the past when they cast Kristen Dunst in the role of MJ who was just dull, boring and annoying in the role, she didn't capture the essence of Mary Jane and it's my opinion that Shailene Woodley won't either. In what I've seen from Woodley she doesn't wow me and jump off the big screen. Maybe when people see the sequel and it comes to there attention that fans won't be sold on Woodley playing Mary Jane Sony and Marc Webb will give Jane Levy a call.

I'm happy they got who they have. It has nothing to do with looks. It's about capturing the spirit of the character. That's probably why they grabbed her. She's a good actress and probably grabbed the essence of Mary Jane. Unless they do another reboot where the characters are older again, we won't be seeing a model M.J

Give that part of the character up. Kristen was good in the role and I hope that Woodley does maybe even better and hopefully has chemistry with Andrew Garfield.

If anything has shown me to not judge a casting decision as bad before the movie is even out it was Chris Evans as cap and anne Hathaway as catwoman. Let's see the movie first then judge.

@LEVITIKUZ there's a four year age gap between them. Woodley is 20, Stone is 24 (and Garfield is 29).

I don't know about Levy in the role, to me she looks too similar to Stone, it'd be like Peter got with MJ because she looked like Gwen, not because he actually wanted to be with her.

It seems your main reason to cast Levy is basically her breasts...no complaints here, lol.

Jane Levy's turning into some weird obsessive fantasy to fanboys, just like Mary Elizabeth Winstead. They're not going to be MJ any time soon, if at all, so people need to just get over it.

I've seen Shailene Woodley in The Descendants and she was great. Hell, she made that terrible show Secret Life of the American Teenager seem tolerable from the episodes I've seen (don't judge) just due to her acting alone. Plus, she is pretty good looking, IMO. In short, I have no worries.

oh god. you all have it wrong with her age difference with emma stone. in 2 days shailene turns 21. emma turned 24 a week ago.

the difference is three years.

and emma stone was cast as gwen stacey 2 years ago. only one year older than shailene.

about her look, initially, i thought that she may be about the same age as emma, but she looks like a teenager. but there are pictures where she looks [frick]ing incredible. i think it's her smile.

when she isn't smiling she looks like an 11/10 knockout:

but when she is smiling, she looks like a tweeny retard from your high school days

@Kalel219

kirsten dunst was shit. absolutely [frick]ing terrible.

people are becoming vocal now, but i've hated her since day one. i used to think i was the only one, glad there are other sane people out there.

-no charisma
-no chemistry
-annoying
-ate up too much screentime
-kinda ugly (yeah, i've slept with much better. and no that's not a good thing. it's [frick]ing depressing to me. i've had a crush on the MJ character since i first saw her in the comics. i was more than a little disappointed when my girlfriend sitting next to me was hotter than dunst's MJ on the screen. DISAPPOINTED.)

get out of the way folks. Kalel's having a bitch fit.

people have an opinion different to him. and he will not stand for it. even though, he cannot refute a single point others are making.

lolfail, you are the kind of trolls which sully any form of discussions occurring on the internet.

want to defend her? give points of debate. as opposed to incessant whining.

Want to hate on her? Provide a point of "debate" other then "Hey guyz, the girl i was banging was soo much hotter then a drawing"

@Kalel219

Inadequate defense. Misquoting something and parroting it while ignoring every other valid point made is a sign of a lazy and incompetent debater. I never said my girlfriend was hotter than the drawings. I said my girlfriend was hotter than Dunst. Your comment was simply inaccurate. Do you even know how to read? I hope you do, because here are my points:

-lack of charisma
-lack of chemistry with maguire
-cheesy actress
-character was whiny annoying little distraction
-and overall, too much screentime for what she offered

This is a REPOST of pointers on the editorial before this called "Revisiting Mary Jane Watson". You have already read these over there. Undeniably, because you responded. Maybe you'd have remembered if your attention span wasn't as low as your IQ seems to be.

Why don't you try giving a defense that offers a little more than "I like her, and I'll whine if anyone disagrees".

No side-steps. Your context.

"Want to hate on her? Provide a point of "debate" other then (her looks)"

I did. Five Reasons.

Your Move.
Kalel219
Kalel219 - 11/14/2012, 1:21 PM
Pros:

1.She feels like she has a life outside of whenever she is on screen, she has goals of her own outside of Peter.
eg, wanting to sing, have a career.

2.Chemistry with maguire in SM1 and SM2 I felt was great to watch, if not let down just a tad by Maguire

3.The relationship with peter is "believable". I think the relationship in the first 3 films was handled perfectly, I'm glad they didn't rush into him getting the girl at the end of SM1 cause it really shows how strong her love for him was cause throughout number 2 she doesn't seem overly happy with John.

4. The small signs of bravery we know MJ has in the comics that is hinted at in the movies.
eg trash talking Ock at the end of SM2
Throwing a brick at Venom

5. SM2's ending. Nuff said, that's MJ.

Cons:
1. Some overly chessey scenes, dancing with Harry springs to mind
2. The ever changing look, honestly she looked the hottest in SM1.
3. Not enough proper relationship moments in SM3

1. Not really. To me it always seemed like everything about her was contrived to create complications in Peter's life, as opposed to having her own character arc.
2. You and I obviously don't see eye to eye in this case. But ok, it's your opinion.
3. This is the same point as number 2.
4. They were good moments. But I thought that were overshadowed by the overabundance of the damsel in distress moments.
5. Okay.

PS. I actually thought her relationship with Peter was better in Spidey 3 than 1 & 2. They actually had proper relationship problems. Mary Jane's insecurity. Peter's overconfidence. MJ in need, but Peter can't be there. Instead of constant will-they-won't-they.

I'm a little tired of this. I know you'll respond to my points here, and I'll respond to your points there. I don't think we'll be changing each other's opinion. Wanna just agree to disagree?

I TOTALLY agree with all you wrote.
I'm fairly surprised this choice hasn't raised up some serious bewilderment among fans: especially after the bad experience in the first adaptation with the cast of K. Dunst, which i consider an amazing actress but, either because of the dull writing of her character or simply because of her look, did not convince me at all.
S. Woodley is, in my opinion, nothing close to J. Levy as for charm and "screen strength" if you can say that.
Levy just takes the scene wherever she is and as far as I remember that s what MJ character is all about. I wouldn t mind giving it a chance starting a petition to bring the crew to reconsider their choice, which will obviously never happen but, yeah just for the taste of it...are you with me?
BTW Levy is a natural redhead and her name is Jane: what clearer sign than that?
