KRAVEN THE HUNTER's Theatrical Release Has Been Pushed Back Yet Again

Sony Pictures has reshuffled the theatrical release dates of some of its upcoming projects, and Kraven the Hunter has been hit with another significant delay...

Kraven the Hunter will not be stalking his way into theaters this summer after all.

Sony Pictures has moved the R-rated SSU movie to the prime winter spot of December 13, 2024 (back from August 30, 2024). The film steps into the position previously occupied by Sony's The Karate Kid, which has now been pushed to May 30, 2025.

Kraven has been pushed back several times already, after initially being set to release in October of 2023. Most recently, the movie was hit with a delay due to the Hollywood strikes, as the studio did not want to release it without actors being able to do any promotion.

The dreadful box office performance of Madame Web has to have given the studio cause for concern, and if Kraven tanks, it may be the final nail in the SSU's coffin.

Although both Venom movies and Morbius were supposed to be part of the same universe and included some ties to the MCU (Michael Keaton's appearance as Vulture in a post-credits scene, for example), Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter and Venom: The Last Dance are reportedly being referred to internally and marketed as "standalone" projects.

“There may be some hesitation to emphasize the interconnectedness of these movies,” Jeff Gomez, an executive transmedia producer at Starlight Runner who worked with Sony on Spider-Man: Homecoming, said in a recent interview. “They’ve talked about it before, and it didn’t work out.”

This doesn't mean the movies won't interconnect in any way, as it may simply indicate that Sony would rather downplay their ties to previously established cinematic universes.

“Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film.”

Kraven the Hunter is an upcoming American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, produced by Columbia Pictures in association with Marvel Entertainment. Distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing, it is intended to be the sixth film in Sony's Spider-Man Universe (SSU). The film was directed by J. C. Chandor and written by Art Marcum, Matt Holloway, and Richard Wenk.

In addition to Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the title role, Ariana DeBose will play Calypso, a voodoo priestess and Kraven's on-off love interest (in the comics, at least); Fred Hechinger is Dmitri Smerdyakov, aka the Chameleon, who is Kraven's half-brother; Alessandro Nivola will play Aleksei Sytsevich, aka the Rhino, and Christopher Abbott will portray another villain known as the Foreigner.

Sony should sell the rights back to Marvel already. All they're doing is losing money.

Only thing I look forward to with this movie now is seeing how it compares to Aquaman 2. Especially in terms of how big the box office is gonna be for a December movie

I know a lot of people here complain about Marvel Studios, some more legitimately than others perhaps, but when it comes to not giving us what we want, no studio has been as successful as Sony

@ProfessorWhy -
I'm more interested in Kraven and Venom 3 than any upcoming Marvel Project personally because every upcoming Marvel project is frankly predictable in how the story will play out. With a Sony Spider-man movie anything can happen. It could be really amazing, it could be a complete disaster, but it'll always be intriguing to watch.

Kraven we have no idea what it's going to do, he's apparently going to be hunting down people linked to animal trafficking and we know a mutated version of the Rhino is apparently appearing. Plus we don't know how far they'll push the R-rating.

Venom 3 we have no idea what it's going to do, he may be fighting Werewolves given some of the teasers. There was set-up for Toxin but given this is set directly after NWH it may even have the multiverse involved and potentially Andrew Garfield. Given it may be the last Venom film there's also potential for it to just go wild.

Everything from Disney Marvel is just taking us from A-to-B, a linear progression with no real surprises along the way or anything to really take from the films.

@Scarilian - Well, to be fair, the unpredictability comes from very little similarity to the source material. For me, going to a Marvel movie I’m hoping to see characters and stories I’ve read come to life - of course, they are changed a bit here and there, too. But the spirit of the characters are mostly there with a few exceptions - which isn’t bad for over a decade of movies.

But I can see where fans might be enjoying the whacky Sony takes, but I mostly come away from them underwhelmed.

@Scarilian - almost every cbm from every studio has been ass since Endgame but okay. Kraven being rated r doesn't matter, the botched the character on the first try. Venom could jump the shark but that doesn't make the movie any good. But I'm glad you're satisfied lol

They’re waiting for the announcement that Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been cast as the new Bond so they can try to ride on that as a casting win for them that he’s Kraven.

@IAmAHoot - I could see that

The more I think about it , the more interested i get in seeing him as Bond

It’s a more exciting choice to me then someone like a Henry Cavill who would be great but has played a similar role before.

Of course since it’s the one SUMC film i actually have some interest in honestly smh…

It’s got a good cast which isn’t a new thing for the SUMC however the difference here is the director in JC Chandor…

All of his movies so far have had acclaim to one degree or another (the only one I’ve seen is Triple Frontier which was decent imo) though we have seen directors of that ilk fall victim to big studios before so hopefully there isn’t any interference from the dumbasses over at Sony which the delays make me think there might be now.
