MORBIUS Director Explains Why This Iteration Of The Living Vampire Is A Hero And Not A Villain

In the pages of Amazing Spider-Man, Morbius has been both a hero and villain. Now, the movie's director, Daniel Espinosa, has explained why this iteration of the Living Vampire is more good guy than bad.

If you're at all familiar with Michael Morbius, you'll know the Living Vampire has fought on the sides of good and evil over the years. He only tends to fall into that latter category when his bloodlust becomes too much to deal with, but the version played by Jared Leto in Morbius will be a hero.

The trailers haven't really shed much light on which side the classic Spider-Man villain will be on, but in production notes for the movie shared by CBR, we learn more courtesy of director Daniel Espinosa.

"Morbius is searching for goodness - the cure for a disease. He's going to find it, disregarding the cost on himself or on society," the filmmaker explains. "And in his search for goodness, he transforms into something he detests. He has to accept the ugliness he has within him, and that there's something beautiful about it. It will be his strength, what makes him unique."

"Michael Morbius is one of the most altruistic characters of the Marvel Universe," Espinosa continues. "He's one of the few that really believes in good. This good man has a horrible disease, and in his trials to save himself and the people that he cares for, he turns into a monster."

"When Morbius discovers his inner beast, he becomes afraid of it - and because he's afraid, he's also afraid of his powers. He's afraid that they will take over and change him, so he's constantly resisting them. To become the hero, he has to accept his fate: Morbius's journey is to accept that he will still remain the person that he is, but he has to harness these powers."

In many ways, it sounds like we can expect a classic vampire story to play out in Morbius, and that's no bad thing. With Venom becoming a "Lethal Protector" in this world, it makes sense to head down a similar route with the Living Vampire (especially if these anti-heroes end up forming some sort of team). Will Kraven the Hunter also receive a heroic makeover? That could be a little harder to pull off.

A new trailer for Morbius will be released tomorrow, so be on the lookout for it here once it drops.

Morbius is set to be released in theaters on April 1.

The SONYVERSE had to make Morbius a HERO because they overloaded with villains but ony a handful of heroes most of whom are variations of Spiderman. Also SONY CAN'T form any sort of team because other than the Sinister Six they have no rights to any team names. The MCU has all of them. This MUST change if they want to compete with the MCU

@JohnShaft - isn’t Morbious a hero/anti-hero in the comics? He wasn’t always a villain.

Dumb. That's what the Geeks don't want. I don't think any geek proposed such an idea.

No one asked for changes. They change things and act like it's a good thing when every book to movie has been changed into garbage that no one asked for.

Hollyweird doesn't learn and neither do people most of the time

Here’s why Marvel CBMs are good: they heavily rely on the source material. Here’s why sony/fox/wb sucks: read the above statements from the director. Just like the choice to turn venom into a buddy movie with a crazy voice in tom Hardy’s head, this film ignores any realities of the comic book material and tries to create a movie that resembles the source in name only. End result? A movie that sucks and maybe gets a sequel at best. Meanwhile, marvel is cranking out films and shows and expanding a universe who’s framework was laid out in the comics. This sony crap is a joke

You probably didnt read well enough because anything MCU related triggers you.

Be original and come up with something new instead of the Taskmaster comment.

There was a series in the 90s where Morbius only attacked criminals and drank their blood.

"Because heroes are more marketable and more relatable to the audience". There, now you don't have to read the article.

Morbius has never been a villain. Just a classic "good man turned monster" trope. Even then, they're gonna find ways to make him boring and one-note.

I don't even know why Spider-man is the protagonist if everyone and their mother is just going to turn their curse into a force for good all the same.

I’m looking forward to this. Love the character and I love the look they’ve achieved here. I hope this does well.
