MORBIUS Looks Set To Sink Its Teeth Into A $40+ Million Opening Weekend In North America

Superheroes have become a big box office draw over the past decade, but not every character is going to bring moviegoers to theaters. In the case of Morbius, an okay, but disappointing weekend lies ahead.

Variety reports that Morbius is currently tracking to open with $40 million - $50 million at the North American box office this weekend. Sony Pictures is looking to temper expectations with a $33 million prediction, and these numbers are in line with Birds of Prey's debut (which went on to become something of a box office disappointment for Warner Bros. when it was released in 2020).

An opening around the $30 million mark would not be great news for Sony or its plans to create a shared universe inhabited by Spider-Man's supporting characters (and no Spider-Man).

Last year, Venom: Let There Be Carnage earned $90 million during its domestic opening weekend. Spider-Man: No Way Home, meanwhile, was in a league of its own with $260 million. Sony spent around $75 million on Morbius before marketing, so even a modest return at the worldwide box office could be enough to help the studio at least break even or make a small profit.

Either way, this probably isn't going to be the opening chapter of a new franchise. We could see Michael Morbius again, of course, and even a flop is unlikely to change Sony's plans for its Marvel Universe. It will be interesting to see what impact the reaction from critics has on these box office numbers, as the review embargo lifts tonight and a "Rotten" score can sometimes kill a new blockbuster.

Early reactions to Morbius haven't been kind, and the Living Vampire being a C-List character means there's not much recognition with casual fans of the Marvel Universe.

When you lift a review embargo 23 hours before the premiere, you know something is bad. Only seeing this once, the drop off next week will be immense, unless if it surprises everyone which I doubt lol

I'm getting X-Men Origins Wolverine and Elektra vibes from this. A relic that belongs in the 2003-2006 era.

...Can't wait!

@BigMikeReviews - At least Origins had Hugh Jackman. This has Jared Leto. Big yikes.

I’m in Australia and it came out tonight here. It was horseshit. To the shock of nobody, I’m sure.

The script for this film could have been vomited forth by any 12 year old without a sense of humour or any imagination.

I suspect that the leaked budget is lower than the actual budget. Sony is trying to save face because they know they have a disaster and they want to twist it’s impending failure to make it look like a moderate success.

I don't know why Sony is great in some areas and is completely worthless in others.

They should really hire lord and miller to run their spidey verse. These films are really hurting the genre.

@AmazingFILMporg - i agree.

I love my Playstation and their exclusives. I love how they take their time with the games and give the studios actual time to finish their games.

My sony camera is still my favorite although there are newer "better" models out there.

But their Film division....
Damn.

Their film division isn't that awful. They produce SOME quality stuff. Seems like their blockbusters aside from Bond suffer from soulless garbage 🥲

@AmazingFILMporg - They only distributed the Craig Bond films up until 2015. They had no hand in any proper creative decisions.

@AmazingFILMporg - Hire Lord & Miller and make better choices with their movies. Presumably they have the rights to actual heroes traditionally tied to Spidey. If we HAVE to get a Sony-Verse, at least use interesting characters like Puma, Cardiac or Silver Sable.

@AmazingFILMporg - a break from my kids you say? Officer would you be so kind as to let us get a peek at the mangled body of this film? What, Irresponsible and incorrigible? I quite agree! Where’s the restraining order, I’ll leave at once.

“Actually you’ve shown much growth in this paragraph, and we’ll award you with foster parent rights of violent adults tried as children”

What no!

Excited for Morbius as long as I'm entertained. I agree with Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg fans are crazy they can ruin movies. I tuned them out long-long-time ago.

Has a Hulk fan I'm I enjoy this version of the Hulk.

TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 3/30/2022, 11:37 AM
@DoubleD - I enjoyed all of em. Norton’s Hulk was a beast, great end fight. Avengers Hulk was too and showed a silly side, to huge cheers with both Asgardians. AoU reminded us he likes pretty girls, also hypnotized or not, and regardless of losing, the fight with Hulkbuster was outstanding. Brohulk was my favorite, whooped Thor, talked more, acted like a kid. When Thanos bodied him with the punches of a super compressed dying star, I understood why he declined the rematch lol. Smart Hulk was entertaining. It’s not that I didn’t like em. He just didn’t really fight and I like fights. Loved when he gave antman the tacos

DoubleD - 3/30/2022, 12:00 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - I to enjoyed them all those Hulks along with Smart Hulk. Hulk didn't really lose to Iron-Man he stopped fighting completely wasn't going fight anyone no matter what they did to him.

BUT it sure was entertaining to watch.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 3/30/2022, 12:24 PM
@DoubleD - well let’s call it a tie between hypnotized hill and hulkbuster, then regular hulk was appalled and caught off guard by Tony who did not know hulk was back. I would say judging by Thor and Thanos abomination hits, that was one of the hardest blows we’ve seen him get, a straight up haymaker. I’m not one to complain about that either like some that say he should be the strongest, nah, that’s what makes Superman boring. Batman should’ve hulked up, bottom line, and if that’s not good enough than doomsday beating him makes no sense. “He’s more dense” haha he’s more dense than the hulk
DoubleD
DoubleD - 3/30/2022, 12:36 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - Let's not forget Endgame Hulk Snap and saving and restoring 50% Universe. Just to charge with Avengers later. Where is Iron-Man after his Snap to take out Thano's army only? Dead.

DoubleD
DoubleD - 3/30/2022, 12:48 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - Hulk is the only Avenger and MCU character that is bullet and bomb proof and can't be killed. Let's see Thor, Captain Marvel and Avengers take bullets and bombs like the Hulk. One big weakness is they all can die and be killed.

Thor lost his eye with knife in Thor Ragnarok and can be killed that would never happen to the Hulk. Hulk can't be killed.

DoubleD - 3/30/2022, 12:53 PM
@TheWalkingCuban - Iron-Man are Captain America are dead.
