Sony Stopped Marvel Studios From Using Kraven The Hunter In SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME - Here's Why!

It's been confirmed that Sony Pictures stopped Marvel Studios from using Kraven the Hunter in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and we have the reason why! Find more details on what might have been after the jump.

MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, written by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales, and Gavin Edwards, recently arrived in bookstores and is packed full of information about the Marvel Cinematic Universe's creation and continued success (and the trials and tribulations the studio has faced along the way).

One of their greatest successes has been teaming with Sony Pictures to share Spider-Man. As a result, the wall-crawler's franchise has gone from being one running on fumes to among the most popular series in the entire genre, with 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home grossing just shy of $2 billion worldwide.

That movie saw Tom Holland's Peter Parker team up with the Variants played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, with the web-slingers squaring off against Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Electro, Lizard, and Sandman.

In the book, Spider-Man: No Way Home writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers confirm they wanted to use Kraven the Hunter in the threequel, only to be told the villain "was unavailable until Sony established him in a solo movie."

This lines up with comments from Tom Holland who reveals director Jon Watts pitched him a movie that, rather than revolving around the Multiverse, featured Peter Parker being hunted down by Kraven (which makes perfect sense with his identity revealed to the world and the fact he was wanted for the murder of Quentin Beck).

Instead, we're getting Sony's Kraven the Hunter movie which, after being pushed from this October, will now be released in theaters next August.

It seems unlikely that Marvel Studios would want to use Aaron Taylor-Johnson's version of the character, particularly if the movie ends up being as bad as the likes of Venom and Morbius. However, should it prove to be a smash hit, then there's always a chance we'll see Kraven hunting down Spider-Man.

Kraven the Hunter first appeared in 1964's Amazing Spider-Man #15. He has since become one of the web-slinger's most formidable foes, becoming a founding member of the Sinister Six and occasionally even coming into conflict with other heroes, such as Black Panther and Tigra. He is the half-brother of the Chameleon.

The character has been featured in a number of Spider-Man adaptations over the years including animated series and video games. Later this week, for example, we'll see him target Peter and Miles Morales in Spider-Man 2

Do you think Spider-Man: No Way Home would have benefited from pitting the web-slinger against Kraven?

@santoanderson -

they A-R-E !!!

I remember Feige wanted to introduce the alien symbiote, during Infinity War, so spidey could get the black costume, but sony being sony, speed up their plans and released their own venom movie, a total díck move I'd say, oh well

imagine what Marvel could've done with sipderman black suit and an accurate rivalry between Venom & Spidey would be.

Wait, what? when did this movie get pushed back a year? was this because of the strikes etc? I mean i wasn't that excited by it, but surely this move just lost the movie all the momentum and 'hype' it may have had.

Unless Sony know's something about the James Bond casting and are awaiting for that news to drop (if he does get the role) to then piggyback off that.

Oh well.

@UniqNo - Yeah the SAG strike and Taylor Swift. Movie studios are now afraid of losing to TayTay's fans.

@UniqNo - Yeah i got pushed due to the SAG strike as now the actors couldn't promote the movie.

They could have made a significant amount of money on the solo project, especially if FFH with Kraven was good. Baffling
Origame
Origame - 10/16/2023, 10:10 AM
...yeah that would've been a waste using him there.

The whole point of the film is that it's a celebration of the live action spiderman franchise. And every villain was chosen to represent one of the pre mcu Spiderman movies.

Kraven was never in a movie before. Therefore it wouldn't make sense to bring him in.

That 6th spot should've been filled in by Tom hardy venom (or vulture so we get at least one villain from Tom holland's time). But even then I get why they didn't since they could barely do enough with the villains they did include.

Unless Mr. Ditkovich is established to be a retired kraven, he shouldn't be in the movie.

@Origame - you misread the article.

They wanted to do a kraven vs spidey movie no multiverse stuff

SethBullock - 10/16/2023, 1:37 PM
@ShimmyShimmyYA - Which would have been much better because it made so much more sense.

Also the writing for NWH was mostly terrible.

ShimmyShimmyYA - 10/16/2023, 2:09 PM
@SethBullock - definitely a nice follow up , still could’ve incorporated JJJ into it as the public supporter for kraven snagging spider man , maybe Peter exposes kraven as a psycho at the end but the dynamic of JJJ trying to prove he’s a fraud is established

As for NWH i like it but it’s a tough watch at home mostly due to how many scenes were set up like a sitcom audience was watching. When Garfield pops up I can literally see the red “APPLAUSE” light going off lol

bkmeijer1 - 10/16/2023, 11:23 AM
@Saga - I disagree, seeing how Watts pitched a movie that just had Kraven hunting Spider-Man instead of the multiverse business
FinnishDude
FinnishDude - 10/16/2023, 12:24 PM
@Saga - It is admittedly hard to argue with the results, at least from the pure business POV, but if given a choice, I would take a more grounded "fugitive Spider-Man hunted by Kraven" story over a multiverse crossover.

You could have had black suit spidey, instead you settled for a nothing burger with nostalgia..
UniqNo
UniqNo - 10/16/2023, 10:14 AM
@bobevanz - To be fair, that nostalgia still bagged Sony a pretty sweet sum at the BO. And they hardly needed to promote it. All the "leaks" and hype around Garfield and Maguire showing up covered all that. I'm now starting to think that deleted IG post from Foxx back when was all part of the plan.

Even COVID didn't slow them down too much in making bank

Off Topic. Marvel Studios Daredevil: Born Again I think the issue with Daredevil is this character not much you can do with him with his limited powers.

Daredevil Kingpin and Bullseye not many people he can fight. None of the Overpowered Marvel Superheroes needs Daredevils helps except as a Lawyer in Court. I think this is why we haven't seen a Daredevil movie, yet he fits more as a television show.

Even She-Hulk took him out Daredevil out fast.

UniqNo
UniqNo - 10/16/2023, 10:41 AM
@AllsGood - I mean they made Kingpin a hell of alot stronger in his MCU debut, i can't see why they can't do the same for Daredevil. He doesn't need to go up against a huge physical threat but there's so much more they can do with him, interlectually and physically.
I disagree.
He just needs better writers.

He can easily lead a movie especially if Sony are willing to part with some of their more Spider-Man centric characters.

Can’t wait to see American-accented, animal rights activist, magical lion blood powers “Kraven”!
Izaizaiza
Izaizaiza - 10/16/2023, 10:50 AM
@mountainman - Right?! Kraven being, for lack of a better word, "anti-PC", seems like it should be kind of the point. Like, if he killed the last white rhino, he would consider it a favor to the rhino. An honor to take part in the eclipsing of his species at the hands of Kraven

Sony wanted their chance to f*** up the character first. I mean, make some money that they don't have to share with Marvel Studios.

Rather than a solo film based on a softcore version of Kraven the animal rights activist.

I don't ever expect Sony's version of Kraven going up against Marvel Studios' version of Spider-Man. Tonally Sony Spider-Man Universe just doesn't fit with the MCU. Garfield's Spider-Man fits much better

If movies like Flash, Blue Beetle, Ant-Man, the Marvels(soon to be on that list); I can't imagine how massive Kraven is going to bomb.
