SPIDER-MAN 3 Adds Benedict Cumberbatch As Doctor Strange - Peter Parker's New Mentor!

Well, this should send Multiverse speculation into overdrive! Following the news that Jamie Foxx will return as Electro in Spider-Man 3, Benedict Cumberbatch has been confirmed to appear as Doctor Strange.

Benedict Cumberbatch will appear as Doctor Strange in Spider-Man 3, and he'll be taking over as Peter Parker's new mentor.

THR reports that Cumberbatch has signed on to reprise the role of the Sorcerer Supreme for Marvel and Sony's third solo Spidey adventure, and will fill the "mentor role that was previously occupied by Robert Downey Jr., who played Tony Stark/Iron Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming, and by Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury in Spider-Man: Far From Home."

So much for the Webhead forging his own path. Maybe we'll finally see him ditch the training wheels in Spider-Man 14? Joking aside, Holland and Cumberbatch had good chemistry in the scenes they shared in Avengers: Infinity War, so most fans should see this is a welcome development.

We recently found out that Jamie Foxx will also return as Electro, and while he may not be playing the exact same version of the character from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the good doctor's involvement would definitely seem to confirm that some sort of Multiverse/alternate universe element will be at play in the threequel.

Jon Watts' still untitled Spider-Man 3 will see Tom Holland return as Peter Parker, with Zendaya, Marisa Tomei, Jacob Batalon and Tony Revolori also expected to reprise their roles from the previous movies.

@Doomsday8888 - It's part of the Sony deal as per the Sony leaks. When Spidey was first gonna be in Civil War, they were going to put Cap in Sinister Six. It's quid pro quo; if Marvel gets to put Spidey in a Marvel film, then Sony can put another MCU hero in a Sony film.

I mean, i get what you're saying and it could be like that, it's not that hard to believe for me, but c'mon...There are MULTIPLE ways to shove the MCU character in the Spidey movies.

Placing them in a "mentor" position is just f*cking lame and just shows how much creatively bankrupt they are.

I don't think it's necassarily implying a "mentor" in the same sense as Stark, more so just a supporting role in a broad sense of another big character - basing it off the inclusion of likening it to Fury.

I really hope this ends up well because I really like the past two films, but the "multiverse" stuff *in this film specifically* is not helping. I just wanna see Peter alongside the FF, man

@Doomsday8888 - Spider-Man has had numerous mentors in the comics too. In the real world Spidey might be Marvel's Superman, but in-universe even Ant-Man came first and has more experience.

@AbidNaga - The only Spidey mentor that matters is Uncle Ben. Sadly, we'll probably see him and Reed about 2027.

@inkniron - I can see Ben being a focal point in however way they choose to go about the conversation/talk with May. Or it comes up internally in whatever struggles Peter has to go through with his Identity being outed.

End of the day, he's Spider-Man and feels an obligation to be Spider-Man even when he can look the other so that's more reason than any to imply the impact Bens death had on him. The dance scene from Homecoming comes to mind where he leaves his phone in Vultures car, so there was no doubt in his mind that he was gonna try to do what Ben imparted on him even if he was threatened and could've moved on.

Anyways, I'm not a very critical person when it comes to passive media so I'm always willing to give the benefit of the doubt if it means I'll enjoy something more with "my headcannon". So if I ever start reviewing movies/CBs you should probably just ignore whatever I write lmao

If anything, Strange should be Wanda's mentor, not Peter's. Just give us a true solo Spidey movie.

I mean he's had mentors in the comics and other movies pretty much all the time? Idk why all the sudden we need a 17 year old kid on his own to be believable as Spider-man

@ShellHead - He never had a mentor, at least not from '63 to late 80s. (Don't know what happened in the 90s and beyond.) His closest mentor was Doctor Connors and Captain Stacy, before the latter died. I suppose one could say Aunt May was his mentor in the original comic book run. But what made the character more sympathetic was that he didn't have a father figure or older brother to count on. He had to figure out all of his problems solo.

@GeneralZod - I get that but characters change and evolve in different settings and this MCU is a different take on nearly all of these icons, and maybe the idea of a kid being all alone and unable to speak to adults about his life is not the best message to be sending out but that can change as he grows older and the stories can become a little more adult?
