SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Concept Art Pays Homage To A Classic Todd McFarlane Comic Book Cover

Spider-Man: No Way Home delivered moments we could only dream of seeing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe prior to the movie's release last December. After all, it's fair to say none of us pictured Tom Holland's Peter Parker squaring off with Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin and Alfred Molina's Doctor Octopus, and some new concept art highlights both of the iconic villains.

Shared by Marvel Studios Head of Visual Development Ryan Meinerding, the first shows a slightly more ambiguous introduction for the Goblin. "This was done to figure out his entrance in the movie," the artist says. "I was trying to make it look like his shadow was being cast on smoke in front of him, then seeing the sun glint off his suit within his shadow. He’s so amazing in the movie!"

As for the second piece, it's a spectacular recreation of a classic comic book cover that is definitely wallpaper-worthy. "This scene is so amazing," Meinerding enthuses. "Seeing Otto on screen again is unbelievable. This is a keyframe I did for the sequence heavily referencing an awesome Marvel Tales cover by Todd McFarlane" (for those wondering, it was issue #224).

We're anticipating seeing more concept art from the Marvel Studios/Sony Pictures threequel in the coming weeks ahead of the movie's release on Blu-ray. An "Art of" book is also on the way, and we obviously can't wait to see some of the alternate designs for that sinister quintet of villains.

It's crazy to me they commission concept artists to do specific moments like this. Like that image probably took that guy a loooong time to do and was paid a lot for it, and they didn't even use it. Can you imagine getting paid to create these beautiful pieces of art that nobody gets to REALLLY appreciate.

Too bad his suit doesn't look as good as McFarland's art

@eGGtheGreat - Word. That’s one of my complaints about the Tom Holland series, his suit sucks. They can’t help but CGI the crap out of it.
